It’s an issue best left to state and local governments.
I live near Ted’s place in Michigan (rode my bike past there yesterday).
Ted’s basic creed in life is “I wanna do what I wanna do, when I wanna do it.” This explains his multiple child support payments, and his corresponding financial difficulties. Therefore, it comes as no surprise when he says that he wants to end his life on his terms.
This also means I got a ring-side seat to the Dr. K circus.
As we all know, every medical procedure has standards and rules. Even if we concede that doctors can perform euthanasia (and I don’t concede the point except as a point of discussion), there would indeed be rules, and review committees, etc. Dr. K was advocating that there should be no rules, and Ted likes that attitude.
If Ted went to the hospital with a self-inflicted arrow wound, he’d be outraged (trust me, the stories of his rage are true) if the docs didn’t follow the rules of good medicine. It baffles me why he thinks that doctor-assisted suicide wouldn’t have rules as well, primarily to prevent (in his case) an angry wife from collecting on his life insurance early.
I know a lot of conservatives idolize this guy, but he’s way, way off base here.
To which I’d say, if you don’t want Big Brother getting involved in your choice to end your life, don’t invite him in. Ask neither for forgiveness nor permission, and certainly not for help. Just go ahead and get ‘er done.
Let’s just pass a law outlawing suicide. Problem ended.
Yeah, right. At least one of the people he killed had no physical illness at all.
I believe Kevorkian has the soul of a serial killer.
If Ted really wants to keep the government out of life and death decisions, he shouldn’t give the government the right to create a class of death doctors. A few terminally ill patients unable to die on Ted’s timetable is not a bad price to pay for hundreds who would die on the government’s timetable. Ted’s still wet behind the ears on this one.
If Ted wants to end his life by suicide he can use one of his guns to his head. The STATE does not have to legalize allowing a physician to HELP him do his deed. I have no wish to stop him or anyone else. I do not want the STATE involved in legalizing others to HELP him espically physicians. GET IT TED. DO IT YOURSELF BIG BOY and yes leave the government out of it and do not ask the governments blessing.
Today, the expectation of a miracle, the personal and family pressure to “DO SOMETHING” , and the medical field’s “this is the prescribed treatment” philosophy has blurred that line.
I certainly would never condemn any individual’s desire to pursue any avenue to extend their life..or end it if the time became evident.
Ted Nugent is a Libertarian, NOT a conservative.
Love the Nuge, but he has a blind spot here:
How does “quality of life” extend to, say, wild game?
Leave it up to the states.
If you actually query these people doing the assisted suicide thing, I think you’ll discover a large percentage believe in some form of re-incarnation/afterlife and that they are just moving to the next position on their individual wheel.
For your Moral Absolutes list.
If Ted wants to die, then let Ted off himself. However, don’t allow the government to give doctors the power to kill people. It’s murder, plain and simple. Once you allow that, the government will start making the decisions for those that can’t afford to pay. Especially look out if universal health care comes along. Over three thousand have been offed in Netherlands, and they weren’t even able to consent. Be careful what you wish for.
