:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

Muslim booted off North plane (U.K.)
Jul 8 2007

A young Muslim was booted off a plane at a North airport after asking cabin crew if he could pray before his flight, we can reveal. The incident happened when the country was on high alert last weekend after an alleged terrorist attack at Glasgow airport.

A source told us that the man - who has not been named - boarded a Thomsonfly flight at Newcastle International Airport bound for a holiday in Malaga, Spain, with friends. He asked staff if he could go in the galley area - which can be curtained off from passengers - and offer prayers before the flight took off. However - according to our source - the flight attendant asked the plane's captain who promptly ordered the man off the aircraft.

Northumbria Police officers were waiting for the man in the departure lounge and searched him under terrorism laws. All they found was a bottle of water, used by Muslims to wash themselves before prayer, a compass to ensure he was facing the holy city of Mecca, and a traditional prayer-mat.

The flight - TOM 4125 from Newcastle to Malaga - took off an hour later than its scheduled 4.20pm departure time last Sunday. A spokeswoman for Thomson said: "The captain has the right to remove passengers from a flight if he feels their behaviour is detrimental to other customers. For legal reasons, we are unable to comment any further."

More Britons travelling to Bangladesh to train in terror
Monday July 9, 2007

Significant numbers of Britons are travelling to Bangladesh to train in terrorist techniques amid rising concern among security and intelligence officials about the increasing appeal of al-Qaida's message throughout the Middle East and south-east Asia.

Their concern is compounded by a realisation among al-Qaida leaders of the value of individuals who can enter western countries easily. All eight people arrested in Britain over the failed bomb attacks in London were doctors or medical students and all entered the country legally. The arrest in Australia of an Indian-born doctor related to two brothers arrested in Britain show how far links between potentially dangerous individuals are spreading, Whitehall officials say.

British counter-terrorist officials recently visited Bangladesh to brief their counterparts there, the Guardian has been told. Officials say the number of Britons of Bangladeshi descent apparently prepared to consider carrying out terrorist acts marks a new and worrying development. It coincides with the increasing number of young Britons travelling to Pakistan via South Africa in an effort to avoid being noticed by British security officials. Recent terrorist trials have shown how the Britain-Pakistan link has been crucial, with many convicted terrorists having trained in camps in Pakistan.

The advantage, say intelligence analysts, is that British citizens do not require visas to enter South Africa. Furthermore, the country is regarded as a good market for identity and travel documents. South Africa's intelligence chiefs have played down the country's role as a potential transit route for British-born al-Qaida sympathisers travelling to Pakistan.

However, Kurt Shillinger, of South Africa's Institute of International Affairs, warned that the country's passport is "one of the world's most abused, available on the streets for as little as £10". In an article titled South Africa: Transit Point for International Jihadists? for Britain's Royal United Services Institute Mr Shillinger warns that intelligence officials privately admit they cannot monitor accurately a swelling immigrant community and the smuggling of people to Pakistan.

In north Africa Ayman al-Zawahari, Osama bin Laden's deputy, has announced the setting up of al-Qaida of the Islamic Maghreb with the idea of embracing other extreme groups, including Algeria's Salafist movement. In an internet video this week al-Zawahari urged fighters to "hurry to Afghanistan, hurry to Iraq, hurry to Somalia, hurry to Palestine".

However, Pakistan remains the country posing the greatest threat to Britain's security, Whitehall officials say. One of the problems is the sheer number of Britons of Pakistani descent who visit the country every year - more than 30,000 between the ages of 18 to 35, the group most likely to be influenced by al-Qaida ideology, according to intelligence officials. Another problem is the pressure on the Inter Services Institute, whose priority is to keep the country together and President Musharraf alive rather than monitor British-born Pakistanis.

Police divers now get anti-terrorist training
07.09.2007

Hundreds of police and rescue scuba team divers, long tasked with pulling bodies and crime-scene evidence from the murky depths, are being trained by the Coast Guard as part of a new post-9/11 mission to help protect the nation's ports and harbors against terrorists.

"For the first time in the (scuba) industry, we have a malicious threat to manage," Steven Orusa of the International Association of Dive Rescue Specialists said. "Any place that has water in its jurisdiction may have a risk - recreational, shipping or industrial."

No one keeps count of how many dive teams there are across the country, but those who work in the field say there are hundreds, maybe thousands. The Coast Guard encourages the port-based teams to take advanced training courses in underwater security. Some teams get underwater sonar systems. More than 600 divers have been trained.

In Jacksonville, Fla., the 16-member dive team responsible for underwater security is part of the Sheriff Department's Homeland Security division. In the past two years, the team has received $596,000 to buy equipment, including boats, a sonar system and an underwater remotely operated vehicle, according to Roy Henderson, the city's Homeland Security chief.

LOL........took your advice and opened a bottle of “Toasted Head” Chardonnay. Mr. RR buys it because it has a really neat lable with a bear on it, and the cork does too. When you live right behind “Bear Country U.S.A.”, you tend to buy things that have bears on them.

This one glass and I’ll be ready for bed........well, maybe two.

Despite warnings of war, gas masks are severely lacking

Yaakov Katz, THE JERUSALEM POST Jul. 8, 2007 (excerpt)

While tension is mounting in the Golan Heights and senior defense officials are warning of the possibility of imminent war with Syria, less than 50 percent of the population will have their gas masks renewed by the end of the year, The Jerusalem Post has learned. . .

Syria is believed to have a large stockpile of chemical and biological weapons. According to the Global Security Web site, the Syrian arsenal is comprised mostly of large amounts of Sarin and mustard gas and is reportedly producing and weaponizing VX. The US, the report says, has estimated Syria to possess several hundred liters of chemical weapons with hundreds of tons of agents produced annually.

Acknowledging that the population’s gas masks will not be renewed and effective for at least another two years, defense officials told the Post Sunday that the IDF Home Front Command was currently considering proposals, if the need arises, to make emergency purchases of gas masks from Israeli and American companies. If war were to break out in the coming months, the Home Front Command would only have enough gas masks for 1.5 million adults and half-a-million children.

The shortage in gas masks stems from a 2003 Defense Ministry decision to collect the public’s gas masks, a project that only began at the beginning of 2007. Due to a lack of funds, the project was recently suspended and is expected to be renewed - following Sunday’s government decision - in the coming weeks. “This situation could be interpreted as neglect,” a senior official told the Post. “If war breaks out and non-conventional weapons are used then we could find ourselves in a major crisis.” . . .

Tunneling Near Iranian Nuclear Site Stirs Worry

By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, July 9, 2007; A01 (excerpt)

The sudden flurry of digging seen in recent satellite photos of a mountainside in central Iran might have passed for ordinary road tunneling. But the site is the back yard of Iran’s most ambitious and controversial nuclear facility, leading U.S. officials and independent experts to reach another conclusion: It appears to be the start of a major tunnel complex inside the mountain.

The question is, why? Worries have been stoked by the presence nearby of fortified buildings where uranium is being processed. Those structures in turn are now being connected by roads to Iran’s nuclear site at Natanz, where the country recently started production of enriched uranium in defiance of international protests.

As a result, photos of the site are being studied by governments, intelligence agencies and nuclear experts, all asking the same question: Is Iran attempting to thwart future military strikes against its nuclear facility by placing key parts of it in underground bunkers? . . .

U.S. officials at several military and intelligence-gathering agencies said they are aware of the construction and are watching it closely, though none would comment publicly or speculate on the purpose of the tunnels.

A tunnel complex would reduce options for a preemptive military strike to knock out Iran’s nuclear program, according to U.S. officials who closely follow Iran’s nuclear activities. It also could further heighten tensions between the Bush administration and the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has said he is committed to pursuing a peaceful use of nuclear power. . .

Coalition Forces Kill, Detain Terrorists; Find, Destroy Weapons Caches

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 8, 2007 – Iraqi security forces and coalition troops have killed four terrorists, detained 21 suspected terrorists and uncovered bomb-making materials and weapons caches during the past three days, military officials reported.

During two coordinated raids on Baghdad’s west side today, coalition forces targeted a senior al Qaeda in Iraq operative believed to facilitate the movement of foreign terrorists for suicide-bombing operations by providing fake documents, officials said. The ground forces detained seven suspected terrorists during the operation.

Meanwhile, in southwestern Baghdad, coalition forces targeted a terrorist cell leader allegedly involved in car bomb attacks against the Iraqi army, Iraqi police and coalition forces. Coalition forces detained three individuals for their suspected ties to the cell leader, according to officials.

“Eradicating the bomb network in Baghdad is a high priority for us,” said Maj. Marc Young, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “The people of Iraq deserve a future free of murderous bombings and attacks.”

In eastern Baghdad yesterday, 12 Iraqi army troops and 11 local residents were wounded when a suicide car bomb detonated at a checkpoint, officials said. Two Iraqi army vehicles also were destroyed in the blast.

Soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, cordoned off the area. The wounded were transported to a medical facility for treatment. The suicide bomber was the only fatality on the attack, officials said.

During other operations yesterday, coalition forces targeted an al Qaeda in Iraq leader suspected of facilitating the movement of foreign terrorists near Khan Bani Saad.

When coalition forces approached the targeted building, they encountered an armed man in a military-style assault vest who drew his weapon on the ground forces, officials said. Responding in self-defense, coalition forces engaged the armed man, killing him.

As coalition forces left the area, several terrorists engaged them with heavy machine guns. Coalition forces called in close-air support to engage the armed men. Three terrorists were killed, and two heavy machine guns were destroyed in the air strike, officials said.

In Hit, coalition forces captured an alleged senior member of the al Qaeda in Iraq organization, officials reported. The individual is suspected of collecting information on Iraqi police, coalition forces and civilians for reports to the al Qaeda in Iraq emir of the area. One other suspected terrorist was detained.

A coalition operation in Mosul netted seven suspected terrorists when the ground forces raided two buildings targeting associates of known al Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders, officials said.

“We’re continuing to chip away at the senior leadership and low-level operatives involved in al Qaeda in Iraq,” Young said. “The Iraqi people have made it clear that terrorist groups are unwanted and unwelcome in Iraq.”

In Mosul yesterday, Iraqi army soldiers and Mosul police discovered an improvised explosives device factory and cache, officials said.

Soldiers from the 2nd Iraqi Army Division in coordination with Iraqi police officers found some 10,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate and other bomb-making materials in a complex that included a building, a warehouse and a storage container. They also discovered a tunnel system connecting all of the buildings, officials said.

Also near Mosul, coalition forces soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, discovered a weapons cache containing homemade explosives and mortar rounds. In addition, the soldiers found a military-grade bunker system nearby that had been used as an insurgent safe house, officials reported.

Precision-guided munitions destroyed all three sites.

In a series of weapons cache finds July 4-6, Marines from Weapons Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, discovered more than 17,000 kilograms of explosives northeast of Thar Thar Dam, officials said.

— A homemade explosives factory and nearby weapons cache found July 6 contained more than 6,000 kilograms of homemade explosives, 8,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, and equipment to mix, manufacture and transport large quantities of the explosives, officials said.

— Meanwhile, three separate weapons caches found July 5 north of Karmah contained nearly 10,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, approximately 30 kilograms of nitric acid, 250 kilograms of chlorine and 3,500 kilograms of fertilizer, officials said.

— A cache uncovered July 4 by Marines from Weapons Company contained 4.5 kilograms of homemade explosives, 12 155 mm projectiles, eight 120 mm mortars, 4,700 14.5 mm rounds and an assortment of other weapons and ammunition.

The cache containing the nitric acid, homemade explosives and chlorine was destroyed by an F/A-18 Hornet air strike. Combat Logistics Battalion 13 Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams destroyed all remaining caches, officials said.

Elsewhere, residents of a village south of Baghdad led soldiers of 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) to a series of major weapons caches July 6, officials reported.

A local man who claimed to have knowledge of a large cache complex approached a patrol and walked the soldiers from site to site, pointing out each cache. He then took the patrol to two men, who he said were responsible for collecting and hiding the weapons, officials said. The six caches contained an assortment of weapons, rounds and explosives, including a rocket-propelled grenade-launching kit, homemade explosives, blasting caps, mortar shells and a 107 mm rocket.

Explosive ordnance disposal teams destroyed the explosives, and several other items were seized for further examination, officials reported.

Officials said the area where the caches were found is approximately 1 kilometer from the site of the May 12 attack in which four U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi soldier were killed and three U.S. soldiers were captured. One of the soldiers was later found dead in the Euphrates River; the remaining two are officially listed as “missing-captured.”

“Senators eye registration of SIM cards”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MANILA, Philippines—The Senate will work for the mandatory registration of all SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards used inside mobile phones to curb the use of these mobile gadgets for criminal activities.
Senators Richard Gordon and Panfilo Lacson have filed separate bills aimed at clamping down on crimes facilitated by mobile phones.

Mobile phones, activated by a pre- or post-paid SIM card, provide a cheap and efficient way to communicate without revealing a person’s identity. Requiring users to register their SIM cards would be effective in curbing abuse of this technology, said Gordon.

Related bills also propose stiffer jail terms for cell phone snatchers.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “She said she was too young to marry. But for honestly expressing her opinion with upright, civilized dignity against her impending forced marriage, the 15-year old Muslim, Turkish-German girl was rewarded with a vicious blow to the head that knocked her nearly unconscious to the floor. Her savage assailant? Her own father.

The parent of the unwilling bride-to-be had returned to his native Turkey with his teenaged daughter, who had grown up in Germany, to arrange her marriage to a cousin 12 years her senior. The cousin was present with his whole clan when his intended received the brutal chastisement. No one reacted. She should have known better. Like many women in traditional, patriarchal, Muslim-Turkish families, she has nothing to say about her marital fate. Moreover, previously in Germany, her father had already beaten her many times for refusing to answer her cousin’s letters, until she relented.

Having washed her face after the blow as ordered, the subdued teenager took her place again with the others, now silent and sullen under watchful eyes, and listened to the negotiations over the ‘bride-price’, in which property, money and houses were mentioned as well as her attributes. In addition, the wedding date, the number of children she was to bear and the date of their arrival were also discussed. However, since no deal was reached, the young woman was able to return to Germany unmarried to await her next “suitor.”

It is estimated that 30,000 women among Germany’s 3.2 million Muslim population, of which 2.7 million are of Turkish origin, are subjected to forced marriages every year. Hundreds of young Muslim girls disappear annually from their German elementary and high schools to travel to their native Turkey and other Muslim countries, never to return.”
