US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

But several factors, authorities said, point to that possibility, including the fact that the bombs were not rigged to a sophisticated firing mechanism, as were the ones in London. One of the occupants was so badly burned that authorities were unable to determine at first whether he was armed with a suicide belt or not. Some of his charred possessions suggested at first that he might have been wearing such a belt. That led to preparation to evacuate the hospital where he was treated. Ultimately, it was determined he was not wearing an explosive belt and the hospital was not evacuated.

While the plotters appear to be highly trained professionals with no established, firm links to al Qaeda's operational hierarchy at this time, authorities caution that neither this, nor the choice of an incendiary device that failed to work should suggest these were amateurs. The reality is the plotters caught authorities by surprise, and they seemed to receive no prior intelligence indicating an attack was imminent. From the point of view of intelligence experts who have spoken to ABC News, that makes the attacks successful, even if there were no casualties.

Al Qaeda’s chilling warning: ‘Those who cure you will kill you’

A senior Al Qaeda figure in Iraq warned a British cleric back in April of plans to attack British targets, telling him “those who cure you will kill you”, The Times is reporting.

The claim comes as police question eight suspects, all of whom appear to be doctors or have medical links, in connection with the botched car bombings in London and Glasgow.

Canon Andrew White told the newspaper that he met the unnamed Al Qaeda leader, who had travelled from Syria, on the sidelines of a religious reconciliation meeting in Amman, Jordan.

Canon White said that he had passed the warning along to a senior official at the British foreign ministry, but not the specific words.

When contacted by AFP a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman would only say: “The official in question doesn’t recall the conversation that is supposed to have taken place.”

According to Canon White, the Al Qaeda leader “talked to me about how they were going to destroy British and Americans. He told me that the plans were already made and they would soon be destroying the British.”

“He said the people who cure you would kill you.”

Canon White said that the man who delivered the warning, who was in his 40s, said at the time that the plans would be carried out in the coming weeks, and would target the British first.

He did not learn the man’s identity until after the meeting and did not disclose it.

My concern is that there are others in this country connected to the same group in London. Maybe they watched and figured out what the problem was getting the 1st 2 to go off.
