US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

I haven’t been on the DC metro since last weekend, but I probably will be on it at some point tomorrow. I will have to see if anything is noticeably different. Police presence has been stepped up throughout the city for a few weeks thanks to a surge in crime, so I haven’t noticed anything different on that front.

It's so unlike them not to be issuing even one alert...

Yes, and the media underpalyed the fact that it wasn’t just our airports that was going to have extra security. The upgrade in our security did not elevate the alert system, but it does include our mass transit - public transportation.

Mass Transportation/Public Transportation has extra security because:

1. The heavy load of people using mass transport for the holiday season.
3. The terrorism-related events in the UK.

U.S. Embassy Sana’a issued the following Warden Message on July 3, 2007:

Following the attack on Spanish tourists yesterday at an archaelogical site in Marib, the US Embassy has postponed tonight’s scheduled Independence Day reception, and has canceled all travel outside of Sana’a. In addition, the Embassy has restricted its employees’ movements within Sana’a through Friday, July 6.

The Embassy warns all American citizens against travel to Marib governorate, and urges them to maintain a high level of vigilence throughout Yemen. Avoid large crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, vary times and routes for all travel, and ensure travel documents are current.

The U.S. Embassy is located at Dhahr Himyar Zone, Sheraton Hotel District, P.O. Box 22347. The telephone number of the Consular Section is (967)(1) 755-2000, extension 2153 or 2266. The fax number is (967)(1) 303-175. The after hours emergency number is (967)(1)755-2000 (press zero for extension). In case of an emergency, if these regular numbers do not work, please call 967-733213509.

PREVENTING TERRORIST ATTACK:
How You Can Help.

This is a message that bears repeating, no matter where you live in the world: Your assistance is needed in preventing terrorist acts.

It’s a fact that certain kinds of activities can indicate terrorist plans that are in the works, especially when they occur at or near high profile sites or places where large numbers of people gather—like government buildings, military facilities, utilities, bus or train stations, major public events. If you see or know about suspicious activities, like the ones listed below, please report them immediately to the proper authorities. In the United States, that means your closest Joint Terrorist Task Force, located in an FBI Field Office. In other countries, that means your closest law enforcement/counterterrorism agency.

Surveillance: Are you aware of anyone video recording or monitoring activities, taking notes, using cameras, maps, binoculars, etc., near key facilities/events?

Suspicious Questioning: Are you aware of anyone attempting to gain information in person, by phone, mail, email, etc., regarding a key facility or people who work there?

Tests of Security: Are you aware of any attempts to penetrate or test physical security or procedures at a key facility/event?

Acquiring Supplies: Are you aware of anyone attempting to improperly acquire explosives, weapons, ammunition, dangerous chemicals, uniforms, badges, flight manuals, access cards or identification for a key facility/event or to legally obtain items under suspicious circumstances that could be used in a terrorist attack?

Suspicious Persons: Are you aware of anyone who does not appear to belong in the workplace, neighborhood, business establishment or near a key facility/event?

“Dry Runs”: Have you observed any behavior that appears to be preparation for a terrorist act, such as mapping out routes, playing out scenarios with other people, monitoring key facilities/events, timing traffic lights or traffic flow, or other suspicious activities?

Deploying Assets: Have you observed abandoned vehicles, stockpiling of suspicious materials, or persons being deployed near a key facility/event?

If you answered yes to any of the above...if you have observed any suspicious activity that may relate to terrorism...again, please contact the Joint Terrorist Task Force or law enforcement/counterterrorism agency closest to you immediately. Your tip could save the lives of innocent people, just like you and yours.

Recognized the CA ISO grid for power use. I’m surprised that they don’t have an alert out, only a market alert. Some one is asleep at the switch and needs to get the peak plants warmed up and ready to go online. (great, more CA brownouts).

They mention some important ideas regarding summer as a time for increased attacks like increased flow at transportation hubs, weather, etc.

It’s interesting that they did not go into the history much. The Taliban who harbored and in some cases became AQ had a history of doing most of their dirty work in the summer and retreating into the mountains during the winter. In Iraq, we have seen stepped up attacks during the summer. In Israel, Lebanon, and surrounds things tend to have a history of ratcheting up during the summer. These are things that should not be ignored either as I think it places significant emphasis on there being an increased threat during that time period. It’s not to say we should let our gaurd down at other times, but the summer months seem to be the ones for big offensives worldwide.

I am passing this on because I have exhausted all my resourses and need help.

This is the situation:

I went home to my parent’s a couple of weeks ago, they live between the Greenville Tx. and Farmersville Tx proper about 1 hour northeast of Dallas. They live in a small agricultural town called Wagner,Tx. The school disctict there is the Bland ISD that serves the very small town of Merit & Wagner.

In these very small population communities are vast landowners who have been selling there hundreds of acres of land for triple their asking price to these certain individuals from Nigeria. They have begun to clear most the land they have bought so far and are building a college and private schools and housing, later to have Disney LOL.

When you drive buy there is a church with no name and the beginnings of foundations for the college and schools.

I have been trying effortlessly to find information out about this, but I need help.

Any ideas

There is nothing to suggest attacks in the UK indicate an attack in the U.S. However, many airports and mass transit systems in the United States are increasing their security presence as a precaution. Some things travelers might see are:

increased use of canine teams, increased presence of law enforcement and/or TSA security staff in public areas, and random security checks on vehicles.

As always, we encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings and notify a security or law enforcement officer if you see anything suspicious.

One night (a year or so ago) I was cyber touring and ran across this interesting forum.

One of the subjects was noting how she hates the snow and cold and warm and pleasant weather is what she and her family and friends are used to. So, maybe summer is just pleasant weather for traveling.
