:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

A just war against the murderers in our midst
The Observer ^ | July 15, 2007 | Henry Porter

Posted on 07/15/2007 11:29:58 AM PDT by neverdem

Our way of life is tolerant, spirited and full of humour. We should make no apologies for fighting the moral descendants of Stalin and Hitler who would destroy it

On a rare dry evening last week I walked to a meeting in London. The streets were full and the pubs overflowing with drinkers, many of whom are on the pavements because of the smoking ban: people having a good time at the end of an average working day, smiling and joshing each other. Too often we forget that we have built a successful and good-natured society over the last 10 years at the same time as absorbing a million or more people from scores of countries around the world. If you ever wanted to see the accumulated virtue of British culture you might start with the humour, consideration, tolerance, generosity and all-round nous to be found in any mixed gathering anywhere in these islands.

It is on this society that al-Qaeda has declared a particular war. The people having a good time are the ones that al-Qaeda wishes to blow apart and maim and intimidate with its bloody plots and fantasies. The recent failed attacks in Glasgow and London, the guilty verdicts of the 21 July bombers and the statement by bin Laden’s deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri promising a precise response to the knighthood for Salman Rushdie make it plain that Britain is the prime target for al-Qaeda in the West. There are 80 extremist groups in the Midlands, 60 in Leeds and Bradford and 35 in London. Some estimates put the number of people who need watching at 3,000. According to the security services, the time in which groups move from radicalism to action is shortening.

A couple of weeks after a man had attempted to blow up...

He himself said, 'By him in whose hands my life is! I would love to attack and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred.'

It appears the brain dead bin Laden hasn't figured out that you can only be martyred once. I can only recall one case of resurrection of a mortal...Lazarus and one of Jesus Christ himself. Neither of them were martyrs. Allah and Mohammed hadn't been invented yet.

Bin Laden was one of several men appearing and speaking on the tape. They include Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq who was killed in a U.S. airstrike June 7, 2006. How big is al-Qaeda?

That dates the tape to a time prior to 6-7-2006 and probably after 9-11-2001. Pulling out archival tapes is hardly a "fresh" threat. It suggests there is no current leadership capable of formulating and communicating a threat at the current time.

Egypt Al Qaeda chief “flees to Gaza”
15 July 2007

CAIRO - The head of Al Qaeda in Egypt has fled the country for the Gaza Strip, arrested members of the network revealed during interrogation, a security official said on Sunday.

Khaled Mahmud Ahmed fled to Gaza, which is now under the control of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, as Egyptian authorities began arresting members of his group in April, the official said

Jails set for 1,000 radicals (U.K.)
July 16, 2007

The number of al-Qaeda terrorists held in UK prisons could top 1,000 in five years, jail bosses said yesterday. And it is feared the extremists will plan attacks from inside and try to radicalise young convicts.

Forty trials involving Islamic fanatics have yet to come before UK courts and MI5 has 2,000 terror planners under surveillance. Steve Gough of the Prison Officers’ Association said: “We are possibly going to have hundreds more entering the prison system. “The radicalisation of young men will be our biggest problem.”

HMP Belmarsh in South East London — the prison where most terrorists are housed — is already close to full. The POA’s warning comes as security chiefs revealed 4,000 extremists have visited terror training camps in Afghanistan then returned to Britain. Last week the head of Interpol accused the UK of failing to check people entering the country against a terror suspect database.

A new Home Office report reveals one in four terror suspects arrested in Britain is an asylum seeker. Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: “Our porous borders have got worse under this Government.”

Fears Grow Over Mega Mosque
Sunday July 15,2007

Gordon Brown is under pressure to block a £75million “mega mosque”, amid claims one of the suspected Glasgow Airport bombers belongs to the radical Islamic group behind it.

More than 200,000 people have signed a Downing Street petition calling on the Prime Minister to intervene over plans for the mosque near the Olympics site in east London. It is being funded by the fundamentalist Tablighi Jamaat sect. One member of the sect is said to be Kafeel Ahmed, who was engulfed in flames when a Jeep laden with gas canisters crashed into a Glasgow Airport building two weeks ago.

The 27-year-old from Bangalore is fighting for his life in hospital after suffering 90 per cent burns. He is said to have taken up the teachings of Tablighi Jamaat after he was asked to leave his local mosque which he had tried to convert to what he called a purer form of Islam. The 7/7 suicide bombers Mohammed Siddique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer attended the European headquarters of Tablighi Jamaat at Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

The sect’s plans for a huge mosque just a mile from the main Olympics stadium have caused much concern. Local Tory councillor Alan Craig said: “It will be a horrendous security nightmare if they are allowed to build this large mosque so close to the Olympics. “They have a growing and ominous track record as further young men follow Tablighi teaching about Islam and then go on to plan horrendous atrocities.” The Newham councillor accused the sect of radicalising and dehumanising young Muslims and said: “The dangerous truth about Tablighi Jamaat is coming out.

Trial slated to start for charity accused of helping terrorists
07/15/2007

DALLAS — A Richardson-based Muslim charity and five of its officers are scheduled to go on trial here today on charges of funneling at least $12.4 million to Hamas, a Palestinian group that the U.S. government says is a terrorist organization. The trial comes at the end of a long-running federal investigation that began with FBI agents' surveillance on officials of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development at a 1993 meeting in Philadelphia.

A federal indictment alleges the group was set up in 1988 to provide financial and material support to Hamas, a radical Islamist group that sponsors suicide bombings in Israel and more recently gained political power in the Palestinian territories. President Bush closed the charity by executive order in December 2001 and froze $4 million of its assets.

At the time, it was the largest Muslim charity in the United States. Holy Land Foundation leaders have long maintained that they aided only health clinics, orphanages and others in need. "This case involves whether humanitarian assistance in Palestine is going to be treated as a crime," said defense lawyer John Boyd, who is representing both the charity and its chief executive officer and co-founder, Shukri Abu Baker, a 48-year-old Garland resident. "There is no allegation that the Holy Land Foundation gave money to Hamas or that any of its funds were used for terrorism," Boyd said.

A 42-count indictment alleges that the foundation supported Hamas through donations to charity committees and other organizations in the West Bank and Gaza that were under Hamas' control. It also accuses the group of funding "family members of individuals who were either 'martyred' or jailed for terrorist-related activities."

The intent of the group, it is alleged, was to "effectively reward past and encourage future suicide bombings and terrorist activities" by Hamas. "Not only did HLF operate to support the Hamas agenda, but it was created for that very purpose," a government brief contends.

MY OPINION: UBL is an icon for jihad.
He is an icon for jihad whether he’s dead or

You see, his iconic image stil inspires jihadis/
jihadi supporters and jihadi wannabes.

That is my concern.

China wins permit to look for oil in Somalia

The Chinese state oil giant, CNOOC, has won permission to search for oil in part of Somalia, underlining China’s willingness to brave Africa’s most volatile regions in its hunt for natural resources.

Somalia has been a no-go area for US oil companies since it descended into anarchy in the early 1990s. This year the capital, Mogadishu, has seen its worst violence in 16 years as insurgents seek to topple a fragile interim government.

Al Qaeda issued a similar tape with previously unseen footage last year a few days before the 9/11 anniversary, (tape released three or four days prior to the day of the attacks) but I don’t believe there was audio with that footage as there is now. It was considered remarkable by some that old footage like that had emerged. So this just-released UBL tape has a precedent.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/07/terror/main1982773.shtml

That UBL video footage was taken immediately before 9/11. This new video was supposedly taken right after 9/11. And this video has us finally see UBL speaking for the first time since October 2004. Whether the footage is from five weeks ago or five years ago, the fact remains that it is the first time we have both seen and heard UBL in almost three years.

Whether or not the footage is archival (as some commentaries today are emphasizing) is beside the point, and drawing hopeful inferences regarding UBL’s condition based on the tape (as many are doing) is not only misguided (as this continues a theme begun with last September’s tape), but most likely, encourages an indulgence in a dangerous type of wishful thinking.

In the context of the media-related chatter in recent weeks, this video should be viewed as extremely alarming. He most memorably expressed his desire for martyrdom in his February 2003 tape where he recited a poem about dying in the belly of the eagle. And for the first time in almost three years, he finally is seen speaking to his foot soldiers on video. And in those 50 seconds, only one message is given - - a call to martyrdom.

The structure (memorialization of 9/11 in the 9/2006 and 7/2007 video clips using previously unseen archival footage of UBL both times), theme (an explicit call to martyrdom heard and now seen from UBL’s own lips), and context (concentration of communications with repetitious Quranic phrasings and warnings) is more consistent with a signal for an imminent attack, not a signal of UBL’s demise.

Ambush disrupted; two extremists killed
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces killed two and injured two rogue Jaysh al-Mahdi terrorists conducting an ambush on Iraqi and Coalition Forces operating in Al Kut July 14.

From an over-watch position, Iraqi and Coalition Forces observed several terrorists emplace a command-detonated improvised explosive device near the planned ambush site.

Minutes later, another terrorist shot a rocket-propelled grenade at an Iraqi Security checkpoint to drive security forces toward the ambush site. The operative, who fired the RPG, then used a woman and child as a shield to escape into a nearby house.

Several other rogue JAM operatives then drove down the road and emplaced another device on the opposite side of the checkpoint. The device was believed to have contained an explosively formed penetrator, more commonly called EFP.

Iraqi and Coalition Forces killed two terrorists, injured two others and destroyed both IEDs in the process. The ambush was successfully circumvented with no death or injury to the teams.

Iraqi Army and Coalition Forces detain insurgent leader and two accessories
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Members of the Iraqi Army, with U.S. Special Forces as advisors, detained three suspected insurgents linked to a rogue group of the Jaysh al-Mahdi (JAM) militia, during a series of operations July 15 in north Baghdad.

One team received small arms fire but safely detained the primary and secondary suspects at the location without injury. The third suspect was detained at a separate target location.

The primary suspect is believed to be a rogue JAM battalion commander and is suspected of organizing kidnappings and leading death squad killings of Sunni Muslim Iraqi citizens. Intelligence suggests he has been involved in more than half of the detonated improvised explosive devices in two of the northern districts of Baghdad.

The second suspect is an alleged rogue JAM cell commander in northern Baghdad under the primary suspect’s control. The second suspect’s cell is accused of conducting death squad killings of Iraqi civilians and using IED attacks against Coalition Forces.

The third suspect has also been implicated in death squad killings of Iraqi civilians as well as operations using IEDs under the leadership of the primary suspect.

A fourth additional suspect who was present during the operations was also detained.

No Iraqi or Coalition Forces were injured in this operation.
