Me, my wife and kids are flying out Wednesday to visit my native Ohio for my younger sister’s wedding. I don’t mind telling you I’m nervous - I probably wouldn’t be if it was just me or me and my wife going. But me and my whole family? My nerves will be jangled.
A Guyanese man arrested earlier this week in St Maarten is wanted in connection with the alleged plot to blow up the JFK Airport in New York, media reports said yesterday. According to Thomson Financial out of The Hague, a fifth suspect was arrested over the alleged plot to blow up fuel tanks and pipelines at New York's John F. Kennedy International airport. It quoted Dutch media reports as saying that the unnamed man was the subject of an international warrant and had been arrested on Sint Maarten, the Dutch part of the island shared with France.
Last month, a court in New York charged Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahim and three men from Guyana, former parliamentarian Abdul Kadir, Russell Defreitas, who worked at the JFK airport terminal, and Abdel Nur, with plotting between January 2006 and June 2007 to bomb the airport. Public Relations Officer of the police service in St Maarten, Yohan Lenard yesterday confirmed to Stabroek News by phone that a Guyanese is sitting in their jail in relation to terrorism. "If you are asking if we have a man sitting in our cell who is a Guyanese in relation to some form of terrorism the answer is yes.
But to say how deep or what exactly it is I am not at liberty to say because it is not the local St Martin police who are in charge of the investigation," he told this newspaper. Lenard would also not divulge the name of the suspect and further stated that it is The Netherlands' Detective Cooperation Team (RST) which is in charge of the investigation. While there are officers from the RST in St Maarten the public relations officer said that the headquarters of that law enforcement arm is in The Netherlands. It was surmised that US authorities approached The Hague with information on the man.

The Dawn of Islamic Europe

SNIP:
Many Muslims (and yes, that word is "many," not "a tiny minority") sympathize not only with the goals of the terrorists, but with their means. As Mr. Laqueur correctly notes, "26 percent of [British] Muslims interviewed felt no loyalty to Britain; 40 percent opted for introducing the laws of sharia in certain parts of Britain
13 percent justified terrorist attacks Al Qaeda style and 47% supported suicide attacks such as in Israel."

Egypt arrests group of suspected terrorists
July 14, 2007
CAIRO Authorities have arrested 35 men described as members of an al-Qaeda inspired group that was planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Egypt, police said Saturday.
The suspects, all of whom are Egyptian, were secretly arrested in April and are currently being investigated by the State Security Court, said a police official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The men are suspected of joining a radical group that aimed to topple the Egyptian regime and carry out terrorist attacks financed by a militant organization in Iraq affiliated with al-Qaeda, he added. They were captured in two groups, one in the country's northern Qalyoubiya province and the other in the southern Beni Suef province, the official said.
Police arrested the suspects after receiving a tip that the group was promoting its goals through its website, but the leader of the group fled to a neighboring country before the operation, according to the official.

Everything will be fine :-) but I understand your nervousness. Have a good time at the wedding and enjoy your family. Check in with us when you can.
Not to worry JJ. I had 3 flights this past week, 3 more next week. Security seems tighter, and more TSA folks are at the checkpoints. I went through the infamous Boston Logan this week and probably had the closest scrutiny I have ever had through there. At Philly they actually checked boarding passes four times (but O’Hare is STILL only 2 checks of the boarding pass, and one of those is when you board). A definitely more police presence outside of every airport I went through. At O’Hare they are requiring any cabbies driving vans to have their back hatch up before entering the terminal area. So all in all things seem to have tightened up a few notches.
*smile*
I’ve been a daily lurker since 2004, but I only rarely post. I’ve recently gone from a full-time position with a long and wretched commute to a part-time job with no commute so I have more time these days.
Thank you for all of the information that cannot be gleaned anywhere else.
PESHAWAR: Peshawar Police thwarted a terrorist plot in Saddar Bazaar Peshawar and recovered a huge amount of explosives from vehicles here on Saturday. Chief Capital Police Abdul Majeed Marwat told that Peshawar Police have foiled a terrorist bid by recovering ten kilograms of explosive from a Alto Vehicles No-AEG-622 parked outside the Askari Bank at Fakhar-e-Alam Road Saddar.
The police discovered the explosives when the vehicles parked caught fire all of sudden. The local calls upon the fire brigade to doused the fire. Police also reached at the same time. During the search of the vehicles police recovered two anti tank mines from the vehicles that have the capacity for vast destruction. Abdul Majeed Marwat further said that the owners of the vehicle are still at large, However, case has been registered against unknown terrorists.
Head of the bomb disposal squad Col. Imran Zia while speaking to the journalists said that they have defused two anti tank mines which were linked with timer. And if timely measures were not taken then it might create vast destruction.

Pre 9/11 style footage, triple repetition of a phrase. However, old OBL footage, hmmmmm
I understand how you feel.
Until EVERYONE gets searched on public transportation/mass transit;
I’m not going to use it except for embergency situations.
Well, I sure would like to know the name of that Guyanese man arrested.
Smiling at you Oorang, you’re post might be the tops of this week.
We’ll see.
Well, congratulations Celtic-Cat.
Getting rid of an ugly commute is a life changing experience for the better.

As Teen Girl Awaits Death, Saudi Surge in Beheadings Could Set Record High

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia Rizana Nafeek, a 19-year old housemaid from Sri Lanka, is on death row because the baby in her care died while she was bottle-feeding him. If her appeal is turned down, she will taken to a public square to be publicly beheaded.... “The Saudi authorities are flouting an international prohibition on the execution of child offenders by even imposing a death sentence on a defendant who was reportedly 17 at the time of the alleged crime,” she said. Nafeek arrived in the kingdom on May 4, 2005 to work as a housemaid. She was given the additional duty of looking after the baby boy, a job the Sri Lankan Embassy says she was not trained to do. The embassy says the infant died on May 22 while she was bottle-feeding him. Nafeek allegedly confessed, according to the statement, but then recanted, saying her admission was obtained under duress. The Asian Human Rights Commission, an independent Hong Kong-based body of jurists and human rights activists, said it was an accident.

6. Binnie on tape.
When you put it all together in a nice little summary like that, Godzilla - I agree, it’s time to restock.
Thanks, Oorang.
I heard this about this on the radio at work this afternoon. I smiled to myself *knowing* Laura must have snagged another tape out from under the jihadis prior to their planned release. Great job, Laura!
Laura, is there a way to know when this would have been slated for release? My guess would be that the tape was to be disseminated on either 7/19 or 7/21.
Did you see today's video? The beginning of the clip from Laura's site takes the video viewer into a cave.
Excellent red mosque links, thank you!
Stay safe, JJ.
Have a great time at the wedding!
You’re welcome Velvetta.
