What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? That's the question that we should be asking in light of the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love.
Hippie values and culture have been taking a beating over the past few years. However, while the hippie movement had its flaws, there is much about it that should be honored, cherished and celebrated.

You are missing the point.
Hippies for the most part were rich kids who could afford to F---- up years of their lives. Call the Hilton girl what you want, but there ain't much difference other than the press she gets. There are thousands of daughters of doctors, lawyers and various Indian chiefs who are every bit as screwed up as her but they don't get the press she does. She is a media stereotype.
Think Patricia Hearst.
LOL
..... Someone else will take care of you, your responsibilities, and your many wants and needs too numerous to mention.
The losers who brought us mass Drug Addiction and STDs, no wonder PravdABDNC worships at their smelly feet.
Pray for W and Our Troops
Where's that goddamned "Kennedy curse" when we need it?
Not to mention they LOOKED like hell!!
Yep, too numerous to mention.
I am from the last of the hippie generation... more the southern long haired southern rock, led zepplin, pink floyd, dead, pot smoking, tripping, gun owning and hunting variety....not apologetic for Dixie or Southern culture/heritage.
we have turned out not to be so terribly liberal though we were soft on civil rights....”In Birmingham they loved the governor but we all did what we could do...etc”
although....plenty of folks born tween the end of WWII and 1965 are secular progressives....especially those in academia and the journalism-media and entertainment
but it is folly to blame all today’s crap on hippies or boomers....hippies were never more than maybe 10% of boomers and btw....contrary to modern story telling....the vast majority of boomer college students were not radicals nor even marched.
that said.....gen x and gen y both vote much more left than do the boomers now....don’t argue....just google voting stats...that is because so many are brainwashed by the state and our culture...not those here obviously
and before boomers it was the boomers parents and grandparents who held power during the 50s, 60s, and 70s that gave us so much of the legislation and SCOTUS rulings that have so ruined our culture....laid the groundwork for affirmative action, quotas, infanticide, gun control, higher taxes etc.
the most conservative voting bloc we have right now are white married with children boomers or near boomers...hippies notwithstanding
hippies were drop outs from modern culture...into drugs and loose sex....which seems pretty innocent compared to today
hippies were not yipppies.....quite a different bunch
btw...the Left and Political Correctness is now what used to be called the Establishment
the Establishment then was staid but responsible....major media was part of it and considerably less openly leftist
That is an interesting analysis.
I was there. None that was gleaned from Discovery
I never got into the “Dead” but a die-hard fan once told me that it could only be experienced one way.
I was there too.
Haight-Ashbury 1969, home 3 blocks from the corner.
Some hippies went down, some went up, all underestimated the long lasting effects of the drugs. That is, the long lasting appreciation of giving up everything to get high, and never wanting to be normal again.
Some got smart, some got rude, some just got old.
I saw the old crowd at the Hippy Fest in the High Uintas, 2003. Sad. Damn Sad.
Women would abandon their babies just to get high for a few days. Kids who were fathers couldn’t care. Grandparents ... got an encore child to raise.
Alaska, still has its share of children named Moonbeam living beyond Fairbanks. Northern Arizona and southern Utah do too, and some never left California around Big Sur. The only proof you need to know it didn’t work is that they can’t raise a follow-on generation.
Nobody left knows what the enlightenment was supposed to be; intelligence, tolerance, and expression. All that came out of it was a stupor, poverty, and desperation. The drugs are more powerful now, the porn much more explicit, the music much more heinous, the ambition much more despicable, and the consequence much more life threatening to the U.S.A.
It is pointless to put down hippies, they were such amateurs compared to today’s degenerata.
Wow!
A collection of human detrius washed up on the shore, No focus, no goal, no nothin'
I finally saw some of the Doors movie on TV this week. Kyle McLaughlin in a bad wig as Ray Manzerek was a hoot and a half!
Leave Patty Hearst alone.
Ironically, it wasnt the children of the working classes that made up the bulk of the movement, but those of the middle and upper classes.
Born in 1952 and seeing the deal firsthand, I agree with all of what you have written with the exception that the working class is/was the middle class. - I was no exception to that either.
Hippies never accomplished a damn thing and although I did rebel and wear my hair long, I am very happy to say that I escaped the era with no lasting damage.
Yea and Amen to that!
Enough of that type of articulate, rational analysis and we might actually reach a few people today.
