I am from the last of the hippie generation... more the southern long haired southern rock, led zepplin, pink floyd, dead, pot smoking, tripping, gun owning and hunting variety....not apologetic for Dixie or Southern culture/heritage.

we have turned out not to be so terribly liberal though we were soft on civil rights....”In Birmingham they loved the governor but we all did what we could do...etc”

although....plenty of folks born tween the end of WWII and 1965 are secular progressives....especially those in academia and the journalism-media and entertainment

but it is folly to blame all today’s crap on hippies or boomers....hippies were never more than maybe 10% of boomers and btw....contrary to modern story telling....the vast majority of boomer college students were not radicals nor even marched.

that said.....gen x and gen y both vote much more left than do the boomers now....don’t argue....just google voting stats...that is because so many are brainwashed by the state and our culture...not those here obviously

and before boomers it was the boomers parents and grandparents who held power during the 50s, 60s, and 70s that gave us so much of the legislation and SCOTUS rulings that have so ruined our culture....laid the groundwork for affirmative action, quotas, infanticide, gun control, higher taxes etc.

the most conservative voting bloc we have right now are white married with children boomers or near boomers...hippies notwithstanding

hippies were drop outs from modern culture...into drugs and loose sex....which seems pretty innocent compared to today

hippies were not yipppies.....quite a different bunch

btw...the Left and Political Correctness is now what used to be called the Establishment

the Establishment then was staid but responsible....major media was part of it and considerably less openly leftist

That is an interesting analysis.

Hear, hear. Another link to the past.

Enough of that type of articulate, rational analysis and we might actually reach a few people today.

The hippies that I knew in the day were absolutely clueless and worthless and afraid of me. At least I knew I was projecting something that was right.

So far you've contributed the only intelligent comments on the thread.

The mindless criticism of what was going on by those who weren't there tends to amaze me.

Yes, some (most) of the kids smoked marijuana - it's much less harmful than alcohol and relatively trivial when not used stupidly - Sargeant Friday not withstanding.

Peace ? Is it wrong to want to live in peace with your neighbors ?

Love ? It wasn't always sex that was being talked about. "Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get it together, try to love one another right now." Nope, not Jesus - the Youngbloods.

A large bunch of us thought the left wing stuff utter crap. Most folks were a whole lot more libertarian than liberal. Yeah, we listened to it in the name of freedom of speech - and then promptly discarded it.

For you mindless, let me leave you with a quote from the immortal Frank Zappa:

Bow tie daddy dontcha blow your top
Everything's under control
Bow tie daddy dontcha blow your top
'Cause you think you're gettin' too old
Don't try to do no thinkin'
Just go on with your drinkin'
Just have your fun, you old son of a gun
Then drive home in your Lincoln.

'Course now, that'd be a BMW or Volvo.

BTW, I'm a Texan engineer who drives a Lincoln Town Car.

Bye, y'all.

I agree with you. I was born in Berkeley in 1965 and was indoctrinated in the hippie values until I gradually started to see the foolishness and downright evil behind it all. I now stand alone among my foemr college buddies as a right-wing conservative. One factor is no doubt my Japanese immigrant mom who taught us traditional values and refused to accept welfare. The richer of my former friends seem to get it the least, a la the 60’s hippies. One friend is an indie music publicist snob who is a hardcore leftist and atheist. The entertainment business definitely shapes the hippy and post hippy thinking as much as these people try to appear countercultural. Its the new Establishment among the urbanites. I think she as well as others have disowned me due to my conservative Christian posititon.

Thank God I woke up.
