The Bush administration is nearing a decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and move terror suspects from there to military prisons on U.S. soil.
According to the Associated Press, President George W. Bush's top national security and legal advisers are expected to discuss the move at the White House on Friday and it appears a consensus is developing for the first time among Bush's inner circle.
They will consider a new proposal to shut the highly controversial prison, built at a US military enclave on the southern tip of Cuba, and transfer nearly 400 detainees to one or more U.S. Defense Department facilities, including the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where they could face trial, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations.
Officials familiar with the agenda of Friday's meeting said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff, National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Peter Pace and Vice President Dick Cheney are likely to attend.
It was not immediately clear whether the meeting will result in a final recommendation on Guantanamo to President Bush..
I think they’re all from the early days. Too controversial to send any new ones there now. The new ones just get interrogated and “tortured” in “secret CIA prisons” in other locations. Which is how it should be, but when we first went into Afghanistan, the numbers were just too large to deal with that way, plus it took a while to sort out the hard core jihadists and the confused young kids who’d been shoved in there with tales of glory for Allah. And some of the confused young kids did have a bit of useful intelligence that needed to be extracted before sending them home with their tails between their legs.
I just know I’m a lot more comfortable with most of these guys being in the hands of their own governments, than being in the US with the ACLU idiots knocking themselves out to get them let loose on our streets. I know which one will cost me more money, and the cases of those from countries like Saudi Arabia and Jordan and Egypt, the risk of their perpetrating terrorist acts is a whole smaller if they’re over there. Even the ones from places like Iran and Syria are probably no more likely to perpetrate terrorists acts if they’re sent home, than if they come here and end up running loose due to the efforts of the ACLU types, and at least our taxpayer-funded court system wouldn’t be getting clogged up by them.
And now the countdown to the call for REPARATIONS.
From now on lets just shoot them on the battlefield.
White House Near Decision to Close Gitmo
.... the White House said the meeting would not take place that day and no decision on Guantanamo Bay's status is imminent.
But hope springs eternal, eh?
Just heard on Fox News Radio that Bush “admin.” has confirmed that they are actively considering shutting down Gitmo.
What a tragedy! The most luxurious vacation spot for muslims in the Americas is close to being shut down.
“Someone put it into breaking news”
T’was me.
I am still steamed about this.
Though I am reading a bit more follow up.
I hope you are right.
On most occasions they turn out to be the reporters pet miniature giant space hamster.
I have not heard that yet. I hope you’re wrong since any appeasement will just be regarded as weakness by the Islamics.
A little thinking "outside the box" might put the prisoners at Vieques, and we could ask Puerto Rico if we could resume our accustomed Navy activities there.
Or transfer them close to the environs of New York City where, for a time, they'd be close to attorneys. (And Schumer and Hillary). :)
President Bush won’t close Gitmo under his watch since he only has 18 months left. Since everyone wants to rag on him no matter what he does then he should just let someone else deal with it.
From NRO: A newsroom sources tells me:
Senior Advisors to the president are saying there is “no meeting tomorrow” to discuss a closure status on Gitmo. Multiple WH advisors say they were unaware of this news report and are using the term “wave off” on the wire story moving now.
Advisors say there is a National Security Council meeting on the schedule tomorrow mid morning.
Advisors say the president’s position has not changed. he has stated publicly that he wants to see Gitmo closed.
Advisors tell NBC News:
“The administration is not “nearing a decision” on changing our long-held policy to shut down Gitmo in a responsible way. There is no meeting tomorrow.”

Excuse me but we are going to transfer them to US soil so now the American taxpayer gets to fund their lawyers?
What is going on with this Administration. This is not the President I worked to elect — don’t even recognize him.
We’re gonna bring those terrorists into CONUS??? Are they insane?
Why do you blame this on the Republican Party. This is typical of a gutless liberal POTUS, who happens to call himself a Republican. Aside from his tax cuts, choice of judges, and pro-life positions, I am at complete odds with his administration. It is not the grassroots Republicans who are bringing us ruination, but elitists like Jorge and Trent Lott. We can and must take our party back, else we will have institutionalized socialism forever.
one small, teeny tiny glimmer of hope, though. Is Karl maybe looking to put one of these terrorists in each and every Congressional District before the '08 election? Is this a move to scare the crap out of the electorate? (Cut to Cosby ... he's in your home state, he's outside your door, he's going to blow you up)
Fold up, fold up, and fold up yet again. Indeed, we are the feet of clay of Daniel.

Put one in Massachusettes, one in Nevada, one in New Jersey and one in California.
Make sure the one in California goes into Pelosi’s district.
To the Bush cave, Robin!
