Wal-Mart (WMT - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr - Rating) jumped into the consumer banking wars with a plan to open 1,000 Wal-Mart MoneyCenters in stores nationwide by the end of 2008.

The idea is to give Wal-Mart customers access to low-cost money services, including check cashing, money orders, bill payment and money transfers.

Looks like Wal-Mart is betting that the illegals are here to stay.

I don’t know that it has to do with illegals, exactly. There are a lot of low income Americans that don’t have enough money for a bank account, who throw away hundreds each year on check cashing fees. When I was a teenager, I used to cash my check at the grocery store.

I think WalMart is offering a much needed service.

Also, I’m betting their employees will be this banking service’s best customers...

I expect that a couple of years after this project is rolling Wal-Mart will come back with the desire of being a full bank and being able to process their own credit card transactions. The other banks will once again howl about losing their approx. 1% of Wal-Mart's credit card transaction total.

I was in a long line at the service desk at a WM a few weeks ago to get my core charge for some batteries refunded. Most everybody in front of me was there to send money “home”.

Wal-Mart is making an end-run around CitiBank, which blocked its attempt to create its own commercial bank (so that it could cut out CitiBank's hefty fees) by raising the false issue that Wal-Mart was planning on putting "Mom and Pop Banks" out of business.

Good for them.

WalMart Ping!

A lotof people I know who work in the poultry industry use WalMart’s check cashing srvices every week. They charge a flat $3 to cash the paychecks, regardless of the amount. Far better than the payday loan places that charge a percentage of the amount of the check.

I wonder how exactly WalMart will engineer this to leverage their Chinese affintity?
Chinglish speaking tellers talking to Spanish speaking illegals?

This has nothing to do with illegals so leave them out of this discussion.

I know many Americans that for some reason or another need to use services like this.

Some don’t trust banks and rather cash there checks at one of the check cashing places that charge a fortune, others can’t get a bank account, because they either owe the bank money or they over drew their accounts to much.

Yes - Good for Wal-mart. Big banks need better competition. No more of the the 20% profit, while everyone cries that big oil makes 9%.

Until they’re all deported that will be impossible.

“Which labor union do you belong to?”

You assume. Your assumption leaves your ignorance for all to see.

I recently read that Chinese automaker, Chery, will soon be making cars in Mexico, and plans to market them here...through Walmart, I wonder?

Wal-Mart is going to put all of these stupid, high-risk "Payday" loan stores out of business. Plus banks who charge an arm and a leg for check cashing.

Wal-Mart has figured out how many illegal intruders send $$$ back to Mexico on Western Union each and every day. They are getting on the bandwagon, and getting a price for doing so.
If you live anywhere near a Western Union outlet- many are now inside nationwide drug store chains you would recognise—spend a couple of hours there on a Friday or Saturday and watch the lines of illegals sending money out of the USA economy.
