Antioch announces it will close in July 2008

SPRINGS — Antioch College will shutter its campus in July 2008 because of a lack of money and declining enrollment, the private, liberal arts college said Tuesday.

The school will regroup for four years and hopes to find the financial resources to reopen an overhauled campus in 2012.

About 160 faculty and staff will lose their jobs when the campus goes dark, said Mary Lou LaPierre, vice chancellor for university advancement.

The undergraduate college, which has a rich history in social activism, has watched enrollment drop from its 1960s heyday of about 2,000 students to 400 today, LaPierre said.

Enrollment dropped nearly 25 percent between 1998 and 2005, according to the Ohio Board of Regents.

The decreased tuition revenue, coupled with lackluster fundraising that prevented it from building a sizeable endowment, drove trustees to close the college.

Well, with all those vacant dorms, they can use it as housing for undocumented workers.

Good riddance! Hopefully, it will stay closed and not reopen in 2012.

Berkley of the East from the 60’s is shutting its doors! Never thought I would see that day come. Wonder if their one prof with the long white beard is still demonstrating outside WPAFB every Saturday morning?

And after Nifong got what was coming to him in the Duke “rape” case, if justice actually prevailed there should be about 80 professors and one college president from that school looking for new jobs because of their collusion in spreading vicious anti-white male bigotry - one can always dream.......

Perhaps someone will start a Bible College or a Christian Academy there.

I think that’s too bad. The school provided an outlet for some admittedly differently oriented political literature and spokespersons, but morre dissenting speech, not less, it good for the dialogue and keeps the debate intellectuall focused, albeit oftentime heated. Never been there but I have met some of the school’s graduates and enjoyed listening to their views. And, not their grads are coo-coo nutcases, some articulate their positions well. It may be a misguided position to be sure, like some of the total disarmament discussion of the 1920 & 30s as the European and Asia threat grew, but a well argued erroneous position can be countered with equally well argued sense.

There are some pretty cool bars in Yellow Springs also. Thats always a victim when these things happen.

Beautiful campus. Quaint town. They say this is "only for 4 years or so" and then they hope to re-open.

The Antioch College System has other campuses (campii?) in Seattle, Los Angeles and Santa Barbra, Ca.

You made me smile!

Every time a liberal dies, satan reaps a new soul for his dominion.

Let us not forget that this dump had Mumia Abu-Jamal as commencement speaker (via audio tape) a few years back. When Maureen Faulkner (widow of Officer Daniel Faulkner, murdered by Mumia), traveled to Antioch to protest, she was met with throngs of students and faculty threatening her with physical harm and tell her to “leave, and take your hate with you.”

May Antioch stay dead. Forever.

Naw...I’d like to see it re-open as a ‘think tank’ retreat center for conservative world studies and navel gazing.

the story is a little misleading. Antioch has five campuses scattered across the country and in Europe. Only one is closing.

This is the “no Grades” school, where you get “assessments, instead of transcripts...

Another Liberal Utopia goes belly up. Too bad that REALITY has to intrude, isn’t it?

Sarah Lawrence is also in a bit of a financial bind, for some of the same reasons. When you graduate a lot of eclectic types, you tend not to have as many rich alumni.
