Protests at Taverner's Allah (Westminster) cathedral (premiere work glorifies 99 names of Allah)

The premiere of a work by the leading composer Sir John Taverner in Westminster Cathedral next week has provoked discord because it glorifies the Muslim deity Allah.

Traditionalist Roman Catholics are planning to converge on the cathedral on Tuesday evening to protest over the work, which includes the singing of the 99 names of Allah.

A number have written to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, expressing concern that the Church will be seen to be endorsing the Islamic idea of God.

But having failed to halt the concert, dozens are now threatening to picket the cathedral with placards and banners quoting Biblical passages that affirm the divinity of Christ.

Sir John's music featured in the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, and his new work, The Beautiful Names, was commissioned by his friend the Prince of Wales.

Mgr Mark Langham, the administrator of the cathedral, defended the concert.

He said that it was a musical performance rather than a "liturgical act of worship".

Oh, My God! I thought this would be held in Westminster Abbey or some CofE place like that. I can’t BELIEVE they would do this in a Roman Catholic Cathedral. Do they have any idea what they’re doing? Will the building not be considered a holy mosque to muslims after?

Muslims love to tell us that they revere Jesus too. There is an eternal difference between revere and worship.

Might as well just hand over the cathedral to them now. They will gladly (with Red Ken’s help) build another mosque on top of it ASAP.

I fail to understand why non-muslim faiths go out of their way to enable the aggressive takeover of all relgions by islam?

He said that it was a musical performance rather than a "liturgical act of worship".

True. But it depends on what you think of "Allah." Is Allah simply another name for the One God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of Christianity? I think not. Any effort to pretend that they are the same breaks down as soon as you start looking into the true nature of Islam and its portrayal of Allah.

Frankly, I'd say this is not much different from letting a Satanist group into the Cathedral to worship their god. If this goes through, they should do a ritual cleansing and rededication of the building.

This is such an outrage. You have the relics of St John Southworth, one of the Holy Martyrs of England in there. More important, are they going to take the Blessed Sacrament when they put this on? Grrr.

Hey, I’ve got an idea! Let’s get a few Freepers with good pipes together, we’ll go to Jerusalem’s Dome of the Rock and sing traditional Christian songs such “Onward Christian Soldiers”. It will be “a musical performance, not a liturgical act of worship”, so there should be nothing to worry about, right? Just remember to take your shoes off before entering the mosque!/sarcasm off

NYer,

I have a very dear FRiend who is undergoing a procedure on Monday and could use all our prayers. This Freeper is a bulwark of the whole FR edifice and a soul known to all, but I am sworn to secrecy.

Could you PING your list to my special intention request? I would really appreciate it! I know things will be well when placed in God’s hands and with our prayers of petition for healing.

Thanks so much,
F

Nice - a supposed Christian church is going to give glory to the 99 names of Satan, as professed by Islam.

Is this a preview of the “abomination of desolation” to come?

Holy crap.
Not exactly the "...abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place..."

...but getting uncomfortably close...

(what exactly are these folks thinking?)

With this, Taverner has evidently converted to islam.

IIRC Tavernor is Orthodox, no longer Anglican. I am surprised he would write this. I am NOT surprised to read that Prince Charles commissioned it.
