The collapse last week of a comprehensive immigration bill in Congress that called for a huge guest-worker program, fast-track visas and a sort of earned citizenship for illegal aliens has unleashed a backlash against those opponents of it who prefer to close the border first and legislate the details of illegal immigration later.
Washington pundits and Beltway politicians are furious at various critics of the bill, from radio talk show hosts and writers for conservative magazines to frontline congressional representatives and Republican presidential candidates like Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

Fred does have a voting record. Do you know the last time a former senator was elected president?
Let’s not think negative. Let’s see how Fred manages in the primary campaign. I think that will tell us something.
I looked it up!
To date, fifteen senators have gone onto serve in the nation’s highest elected office, the presidency. Two senators, Warren G. Harding and John F. Kennedy, moved directly from the U.S. Senate to the White House.

I have always loved Fred. I happen to think Romney is a better candidate right now. Fred is going to need a tremendous amount of energy to run a campaign against Romney. Does he have it? I want him to get in the ring and debate. Then we will see where things fall.
Except they wouldn't say it that nicely.
See post 17 .
A true indicator will be to watch Fred Barnes and his masters at the Weakly Standard. When they finally realize that their chosen boy McPain is done , I suspect they will gravitate towards Thompson . The Weakly Standard has disdain for any candidate who isn’t what they would consider a “Hawkish Washington Insider” . McPain is one and Thompson would be the other.
Related in what way?
If he supported provisions in the amendment which reportedly continued chain migration and in fact expand it to other relatives why did Fred ultimately vote against the Simpson Amendment with 79 other Senators. There is no proof offered that Fred supported adding adult relatives to the amendment unless his own statements on the Senate floor or elsewhere support that conclusion.
That amendment which was designed to increase chain migration in 1996 was defeated 80-20, and Fred joined 79 other Senators to defeat it. Ask yourself why it was such a lopsided vote.
It seems that on the Democrate side all of the front-running candidates are or were Senators. When was the last time a mayor or Congressman was elected President?

Where and when has Fred advocated bringing third world labor here to our shores.
CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!

Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.
“Fred Thompsons voting record on immigration issues disagrees much with his rhetoric.”
Fred Thompson, in my opinion, is just the flavor of the month. The Dems have Obama, the Republicans have Fred. I am beginning to have the old Steve Goodman song “Election Year Reg” run thru my mind alot.
If you feel like you need a scorecard
Well, you really don’t have to fuss
You know the winner is always somebody else
And the loser is always us
Shake it to the east, shake it to the west
Hand me down my bullet proof vest
It’s nobody’s choice and it’s anybody’s guess
So do that election, there ain’t no selection
Do that election year rag
Here’s my main concern. All should be concerned about it.
Fred Thompson is Chairman of an advisory board in our State Dept.

Civilian import and merchant constituents could influence military decisions in the next executive administration about as well as they are influencing the current Administration. Higher freight fuel prices today would cut into their profits during a military conflict.

While such political enterprise is in motion, Iran is building a nuclear arsenal with a plan to arm its Islamo-fascist friends in other nations. As Iran does so, Russia might change her mind about staying out of the impending unavoidable physical fray.
Oil prices will get much higher for a lot longer, if Iran is allowed to build its nuclear weaponry. But with our generation, business is all about “Where do you want to go today?” [TM/SM Microsoft]
How will a herd of libertine, anti-defense civilians who only care about what they can get today command our military forces after their next candidate is president?
Duncan Hunter is a Vietnam combat veteran. He was a member of the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers. He earned a Bronze Star and was Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, until the Democrat majority was voted in during the 2006 election. Congressman Hunter continues to work in the Armed Services Committee. Our nation’s defense and strength are his highest priorities—not special interests.
Thank you. That was well considered and written.
But Fred isn’t a “former senator”. If he runs, he will be a “former actor”. There was another candidate in that category, and the outcome was quite different.
