Who is Illiberal on Immigration?
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 14, 2007 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 06/13/2007 9:34:09 PM PDT by gpapa

The collapse last week of a comprehensive immigration bill in Congress that called for a huge guest-worker program, fast-track visas and a sort of earned citizenship for illegal aliens has unleashed a backlash against those opponents of it who prefer to close the border first and legislate the details of illegal immigration later.

Washington pundits and Beltway politicians are furious at various critics of the bill, from radio talk show hosts and writers for conservative magazines to frontline congressional representatives and Republican presidential candidates like Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

Duncan Hunter is the only one with the conservative record to back his comments up on that. Thompson has voted to legalize a third world flood and has neglected national security, at times, in his votes for third world trade.

A completely dishonest assessment, lumping legal immigration in with illegal immigration.

Fred voted against a general amnesty, he authored a bill that was supposed to beef up border security, and voted against welfare for illegals. I’m ok with that record.

The first guy who advocates for the Americans left behind instead of the illegals wins the election.

Well, if a politician votes to legalize the importation of monstrous floods of labor from the third world, then the incoming horde won’t be illegal any more. That’s true, and it’s a very Libertarian thing to do (readers will see Cato praise for Fred).

Fred Thompson’s voting record on immigration issues disagrees much with his rhetoric.

From you link:

Voted in 1996 to continue chain migration
Sen. Thompson in 1996 voted against the Simpson Amendment to S.1664. It was a vote in favor of a chain migration system that has been the primary reason for annual immigration levels snowballing from less than 300,000 in 1965 to around a million. Sen. Thompson supported provisions that allow immigrants to send for their adult relatives. Then each of those relatives can send for their and their spouse’s adult relatives, creating a never-ending and ever-growing chain. The bi-partisan Barbara Jordan Commission recommended doing away with the adult relative categories (begun only in the 1950s) in order to lessen wage depression among lower-paid American workers. The Simpson Amendment attempted to carry out that recommendation. But Sen. Thompson helped kill the reform by voting with the 80-20 majority against the amendment. Sen. Thompson’s vote helped continue a level of immigration that the Census Bureau projects will result in a doubled U.S. population in the next century.See detailed description

I think that we are going to find that Thompson is very similar to McPain when it comes to policy stances . Thompson is being looked to by the Republican establishment to replace the self imploding McPain campaign . Items are coming out about Thompson that don’t mesh well with the views of the people that are singing his praises.

The fact of the matter is that none of our top four candidates are going to totally pass the smell test and the question will be : Which one are we going to settle for ?

The problem with MeCain is his long record of teaming up with Democrats to advance their positions. His overall voting record isn’t bad, so to compare Fred’s with it is a bit misleading. Fred has no history, to my knowledge, of teaming up with Rats when it really counts — let alone a record of insulting the Republican base.

Maybe he’s learned something since then. Let’s ask Fred to repudiate that ‘96 vote for chain migration. More constructive than just assuming the worst.
