An explosion shook downtown Nairobi on Monday morning, killing one person and injuring at least 31 others, officials said.
The cause of the blast was not clear, but police Commissioner Mohamed Hussein Ali said "it was something that somebody was carrying."

Initial reports suggest it was a suicide bomber who detonated a bomb, but this has not been confirmed.
The area has been sealed off by police and the military. The blast was just two blocks away from where the US embassy was bombed in 1998.
The blast happened at about 0800 (0500 GMT), witnesses said.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The area has been cordoned off as police investigate. Witnesses said a man with what looked like grenades was seen trying to jump into a bus when the explosion occurred. The witnesses said he attempted to detonate the grenade and was killed in the explosion.
The Ambassadeur Hotel is located in the city centre and has a major bus stage right next to it. At about 8.15am when the explosion occurred, there were scores of pedestrians and workers waiting for buses to their offices.”

The initial investigations shows that a man got off a minivan taxi and a guard tried to stop him from entering a small restaurant because he was wearing something that looked suspicious, police officers at the scene said.
The explosion occurred shortly after, said the officers, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.”

‘It was a bomb explosion and body parts have been thrown apart,’ policeman Gabriel Omondi told AFP after the blast in front of the crowded City Gate restaurant on Moi Avenue, one of Nairobi’s main streets.
‘I can confirm one dead. He is a suspected suicide bomber,’ Moses Muchoki, an official from the Kenyan Red Cross, told AFP.
An AFP correspondent saw shredded papers from a Koran strewn at the explosion site.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Eye witness accounts indicate that, a person of Asian origin was seen carrying a paper bag, and tried to board a City Hoppa bus, when the bomb exploded.
Already Kenyatta National Hospital has received some 33 casualties injured in the explosion. Many had deep cuts, burns and fractures. The Hospital administration says they are well equipped and will handle the casualties as they arrive.”
