One Serious SIG
Guns & Ammo ^ | July 2007 | Greg Rodriguez

The polymer-framed, ergonomically enhanced P250 is, at the risk of sounding trite, innovative.

Like so many superlatives, "innovative" has lost its punch thanks to overuse by unimaginative and overly enthusiastic marketing campaigns. Like many people, I've become immune to such marketing hype. In fact, I am more inclined to dismiss over-hyped products out of hand on general principle than give them a fair shake. So when SIGARMS'' Paul Erhardt called to tell me about a new SIG offering that he called "the most innovative pistol ever," I listened but I was pretty skeptical. It's no secret that the rise in the number of states passing "shall issue" concealed carry laws and the changing face of law enforcement have created an ever-increasing demand for flexible firearms to fit shooters of every shape and size. Some manufacturers have dealt with this situation with quick fixes such as replaceable back straps, thin grips and short triggers, while others have ignored the problem altogether.

So Ozzy,

What happens to you when you’re under pressure? Not always but darn near when I was qualifying my DA shots were less precise than my SA, just because (I think) I was used to the feel of the SA.

So I began to like the dreaded plastic Glock monster and my DA Sig because every pull was the same.

The P229 Elite has the STR trigger design which is the sweetest, shortest, smoothest DA I've ever pulled.
It is one awesome gun. The DA first round trigger pull sold me, I bought one last week. It is the best rapid fire pistol I've ever shot. Mine is a SW40.

Yep, For day to day reliability, firepower and ease of use...make mine a Glock thank-you very much.

I have one of the original (Gen 1) G17's and just picked up one of the brand new G21 SF (short frame/small frame/slim frame, depending on who you read). Although the change is fairly small, it makes a big difference for me. I absolutely love it!

I love having 13 big fat .45's available and the really cool thing is that all of the new mags can be used in either a regular G21 or the SF.

I also like haveing the option of simply dropping in a different barrel and using Corebon .400's. 10 mm power in the same frame w/ the same magazines.

When I read that someone is carted off to a hospital after being shot seven, and sometimes more, times with a 9 mm I know there is a clue in there somewhere.

The 21 SF is very nice, but I’m not a fan of the magazine modifications.

I’ve been shooting SIGs and Glocks for years and they’re two of the best pistols out there. A vast improvement in reliability over the 1911s.

For me, it is tough to pick one over the other. I have a Sig P239 and a HK P2000SK and I have no complaints with either.

I am slightly partial to the SIG, if only because they are 20 minutes down the road and I have taken a half dozen classes at SIGArms Academy.

That would do it! I really researched all available when I purchased my HK. I test fired them all for about a year. I went with the HK and have never looked back.

"A vast improvement in reliability over the 1911s."

Ah yes, the old 'unreliable' 1911. I have three 1911's: A Springfield GI 45, a Kimber Stainless Target II and a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup. Never had a hiccup out of any of them. My GI 45 is my constant home companion and that's the lowest cost gun of the lot. I must be one lucky fella...

You are ;)
I’ve had SIX of my own personally (mostly Springfields, two Colts), not to mention the two dozen that have been issued to my by Uncle Sugar.

Even the lightly-used Reserve 1911s weren’t nearly as reliable as the Glocks or SIGs. My P226 has over 43,000rnds through it since 1990 and it’s still a champ. I’m all outta 1911s, though.

But, hey, that’s just my personal experience.
Yours could be different.

The article goes ga-ga about the 250 frame concept. Kel-Tec was the first to use it several years ago.

"My P226 has over 43,000rnds through it since 1990 and it’s still a champ."

I don't think I'm gonna live long enough to put 43,000 rounds through any of my guns. My daughter might, though.

I've got a little over 1300 rounds through my Springfield in the last year. At that rate, I'll need another 33.076 years to get there. But I don't see any particular reason that any of my 1911's couldn't make it to 100,000 with proper care.

Whoever shoots them after I'm gone may make that milestone, I dunno and I don't care.

Got nothing against the Sigs and Glocks or whatever, I just like my 1911's. They fit me, I shoot them passably well and I appreciate the history.

I'm just saying...

You’re 100% right in appreciating the 1911 and it’s history. There’s no doubt that it was the right handgun at the right time.

I think the grip safety and the trigger are two of its biggest successes. However, I prefer the “modified Browning” (linkless) lockup of the SIGs and Glocks. It just seems to work better and makes the weapon much easier to disassemble and reassemble under dire circumstances.

If they every put as nice a trigger on a SIG or Glock, it would be the best of both worlds.

I’m interested in the range reports of their 1911 line as well.

If the same Sig quality goes into this line and, given the array of options/mods the Sig custom shop is capable of, this should be one reliable and accurate line(oh, don’t forget a hi-cap mag or five). Take a look. They have quite a varied line:

http://www.sigarms.com/Products/ShowCatalogProduct.aspx?categoryid=25

They’ve only been out since May ‘06, so we should be seeing them at the range soon.

hint-egg on your fellow enthusiast at the range til the bug bites him. “...may as well just safe that Les Bauer...”

Concur on the lockup differences. A Glock can be detail stripped effortlessly and quickly.

DIY can make a huge difference on a Glock trigger and action. That I know for sure, without compromising function/safety. Sig trig? Don’t have one:-(

There’s a pretty good market for Glock armorers.

I know of two that set up shop in gun stores and at gun shows and do nothing but “fluff and buff” and part replacement.

The day I picked up my Glock 22, I had the 5.5# disconnector replaced with a 3.5# unit. Very nice for accuracy. I’d probably stick with 5.5 for a CCW gun, but I’m currently carrying my P229.

The trigger is double action only with a long stroke, ...

And that's why I will never own this SIG. DAO modified TDA (traditional double action) trigger groups SUCK. The short stroke Glock trigger is superior. In the Defensive Pistol courses I've taken (>200 hours), the top shooters carry either a Glock, a 1911 of some stripe (Colt or Kimber) or revolver (usually a S&W).

The S&W revolver usually shoots highest score, followed by the 1911 and Glock. However, the Glocks pass them all in the failure-to-fire/dissassembly/[re]assembly drills. While the 1911'ers are messing with their barrel bushing assemblies, the wheelgunners are searchin' for ammo (got a level the playing field somehow), the glocksters are back up and running chopping wood (cutting the silhouette target off at the knees with precision fire). Those were the days.

The SIG “Granite” pistols have been out for a little longer than that, but the first batch had some significant quality issues.

SIG initially took it in the ass fixing that mess, but the most recent versions have been getting decent reviews.

I know just the guy. And I owe him one too. And he just ordered a Les Baer. And he really likes the Sig 226.

Easy mark...
