We should thank all four of these effective, patriotic senators. I never thought Libby Dole had this courage in her.

Amen!

I get emails from Dole and I’d say she’s pretty right on, but this took a lot of courage because she is a Bush supporter in a lot of issues.

It's telling that the Bush Admin has drifted so far leftwards that Libby Dole is holding them back.

This makes it sound as if the sunset bill on guest workers was Dorgan’s bill.

I thought Obama presented that amendment, because Graham was going after Obama in a recent rant for puttimg a time limit on guest workers.

Whatever.

This bill isn’t dead yet. It is only severely wounded. When Bush gets back from G-8, he will be pushing for another try to get it or some semblance of it through for his signature.

You are correct, all valiant efforts that succeeded. Jeff Sessions needs to be added to that list, he fought valiantly with facts and hard data. Unlike the other side with worn out rhetoric and false emotions.

I am glad to see some in Congress standing for what is right. Even some Dems. It doesn't happen often.

Many senators offed valuable amendments, which shows the true way the bill should have headed. Vitter - no AMNESTY. Cornyn - no Felons & full disclosure & permanent bar on criminals and terrorists. Sessions - protecting tax dollars & no entitlements. Coubrun - enforce existing statutes & complete building fence/wall. Dorgen - sunset provisions. Inhofe - English please. DeMint - mandatory health coverage. McConnell - photo ID to vote. And other amendments that didn't get to see the light of day, like Libby Dole's.

The Kennedy-McCain bill last year was a disaster. This years Kennedy-Kyl (Specter, McCain, etc and even GW)was a close second. With all these ideas just mentioned, Reid doesn't seem to think he has any ideas to start a new bill with, cause he'll stick with the botch job he has.

Sen Sessions had it right when he said 'secret sessions' with La Raza and Chamber of Commerce and other influence groups. I do believe we'll see it again before the sessions over ... though I prefer it be dead in it's present form. I don't foresee this Congress, under Reid and Pelosi, taking on some of the major issues of the day ... Tax Reform, Immigration Reform, Social Security Reform, Medicare Reform, a viable Energy Policy just to name a few.

I called her office to thank her for her vote. She did the right thing and I’m proud of her.

I also called Senator Burr’s office to thank him.

Senators Cornyn, DeMint, Dole, Enzi, and Dorgan, thank you all. It's good to know that there are still some patriots left in our Senate!

But I agree with those who caution that Bush will probably try one more time before his Presidency is over. We must continue to be vigilant and not succumb to complacency.

The headline says four Senators and names them, but later the story names five, including Jim Bunning who was left out of the headline.

Senator Dole is LIDDY Dole, not LIBBY Dole. In fact, it’s said by those close to her that she hates to be called LIBBY. I don’t blame her. With the last name Dole, especially, that whole name would be nothing but a joke.

This has been corrected on this forum hundreds of times, but to no avail.

Also, I’ve told others dozens of times that she’s not a liberal. I never claimed she was EXTREMELY conservative on every issue, but I’ve been repeatedly proven right that a LIB she ain’t.

Now, ya gotta know that she’s representing the interests of her NC consituents, as well. That state has taken a gigantic hit what with cheap imports and cheap labor. She must’ve figured this bill would not only not fix the cheap labor problem but would worsen it, no matter what the bill proponents hoped it would do.

Shows she’s of a practical turn of mind, as well. The bill isn’t workable. It’s dreaming to assume the gov. could deliver even a fraction of what this bill promises. President Bush and others on his side continue to trust way too much in the federal government “big solution” compromise. Not Liddy.

At the same time, she’s a lady, NOT a neanderthal engaging in horribly crude and demeaning attacks on the President and others as so many have (not in the Senate, but among the base). In fact, hats off to Sessions, Cornyn, et al, for their guts AND their civilized conduct in this fight.

the headline left out Bunning .. so it’s five. And the only reason Sessions isn’t in the heroes list, which he should head, is because he voted properly in the first instance. Sessions has become my ultimate Senate hero.

I emailed Cornyn and mentioned specific details so that he knew that members of his constituency were aware of just exactly how far he’d gone to defeat the immigration bill. Kay Bailey Hutchison, our other senator, wasn’t in on this deal, but she did vote against cloture.

Thank you phone calls made with an addendum......now that we have killed this bill we expect it to stay dead and expect Congress to force the agencies and the President to ENFORCE our immigration laws.
I got through on the first try to all their offices so they need more thank you calls!

According to other sources, Cornyn was not in the group, but Corker was.

The above 5 joined the 6 who supported the amendment the first time around. Sessions, Shelby, Sununu, Thune, Vitter, & Inhofe.
