“Rushdie knighted in honours list”
ARTICLE SNPPET: “Salman Rushdie, who went into hiding under threat of death after an Iranian fatwa, has been knighted by the Queen.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “It was banned in many countries with large Muslim communities and in 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s spiritual leader, issued a fatwa, ordering Sir Salman’s execution.
In 1998, the Iranian government said it would no longer support the fatwa, but some groups have said it is irrevocable.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In backing Jack Straw over his comments on Muslim women wearing veils, Sir Salman said veils “suck” as they were a symbol of the “limitation of women”.
He also weighed into the furore surrounding the Danish cartoons, which satirised the Prophet Muhammad, warning against Islamic “totalitarianism”.
Of his knighthood for services to literature, Rushdie said: “I am thrilled and humbled to receive this great honour, and am very grateful that my work has been recognised in this way.””

Hydro One has suffered another copper theft.
OPP in South Glengarry received a report yesterday of about 91 meters of copper wire stolen from a jobsite on Concession 3.
Police have said copper theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in Ontario. Hydro One has partnered with Crime Stoppers in trying to catch the thieves.
The soaring cost of the metal is believed to be the reason for the crime trend.
Anyone with information about the thefts can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

“Bunkers in vogue as cold war fears rise”
By Bojan Pancevski in Vienna, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 12:55am BST 17/06/2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “It may sound a lot of money for an unsightly steel cube, but Germans are queuing up to pay £60,000 for the latest addition to the garden: a prefabricated nuclear bunker.
With fears of terrorism, natural disasters and a cold war revival on the rise, a German company has tapped into the climate of insecurity and produced the continent’s first ready-made fallout shelter.
ABC Guard - its name a reference to the protection it is said to offer from atomic, biological and chemical warfare - invites potential customers to “rely on absolute security made in Germany” as it restores an industry thriving on fears that have not been felt in the country since the withdrawal of Russian troops from former East Germany.”
Thanks, Cindy!
You’re welcome and THANK YOU Fedora.

Ex-UC Riverside student held in firebomb incidents

A former UC Riverside student was arrested Saturday in connection with a series of on-campus incidents including the discovery of two homemade firebombs that led to the cancellation of Friday evening’s graduation ceremony, authorities said.
University police arrested Audley Yung, 22, originally from Richmond, Calif., at his off-campus apartment. They said they believed he was responsible for the firebombs, sending officials threatening letters and setting a palm tree on fire.
Yung was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center on three charges: possession of a destructive device, arson and terrorist threats. Bail was set at $25,000.
Officials said their investigation was ongoing but that they believed Yung acted alone.
Yung, who entered the university as a biological sciences major and later switched to undeclared in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, attended UC Riverside in 2002 and 2003, authorities said, and took summer session courses on the campus in 2004, 2005 and 2006. He is not enrolled for the upcoming summer session.
The university resumed its commencement ceremonies Saturday under heightened security. Officials said that Friday night’s commencement on the campus had been rescheduled for Monday at 9 a.m., with tickets for the Friday event being accepted then.
