Lithuania 2007 Crime & Safety Report
U.S. Embassy Vilnius released the following Warden Message on June 7:
During the past few months, there have been conflicts between Lithuanians and people of non Caucasian identity in Klaipeda and, more recently, Vilnius. The recent increase in reported incidents of this type prompts us to remind everyone to remain vigilant. Currently, no particular locations have been identified as problematic.
You can take safety precautions to minimize your vulnerability. When possible, travel with at least one other person and avoid walking long distances during the night time. Ostentatious displays of wealth should be minimized. Additionally, please note that alcohol may impair not only your ability to identify danger, but also to respond correctly.
Regardless of day, time, or location, you could be a target of criminal activity. As always, be conscious of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the police.
For more information, please see the Consular Information Sheet for Lithuania at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_952.html or for more general information, http://www.travel.state.gov
The U.S. Embassy in Vilnius can be reached at (370) 5 266-5500. The Embassys home page is http://lithuania.usembassy.gov .
