“Lebanese army shells camp for 5th day (Seven al-Qaida-inspired guerrillas surrender)”
AP on Yahoo ^ | 6/5/07 | Bassem Mroue - ap
Posted on 06/05/2007 12:19:57 PM PDT by NormsRevenge
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TRIPOLI, Lebanon - Seven al-Qaida-inspired guerrillas surrendered Tuesday to a secular Palestinian faction at a besieged refugee camp in northern Lebanon, offering the first tangible sign that moderate Palestinians might be moving against the militants.
But others in the extremist group Fatah Islam continued to fight, and Lebanese government troops battered their hideouts in the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp for a fifth straight day. Clouds of smoke billowed over the camp as artillery shells exploded on militant positions.
Calm held at Lebanon’s biggest Palestinian refugee camp, Ein el-Hilweh in the south, where Islamic extremists sympathetic to Fatah Islam clashed with Lebanese soldiers Sunday night and Monday morning. The camp’s 65,000 residents remained on edge, fearing combat could erupt again.
Many people worry the fighting could spread to more of Lebanon’s 12 camps for Palestinians, which are riven with the factional rivalries that have brought violence to the Gaza Strip.
The surrender by seven militants at Nahr el-Bared was the first time a major Palestinian group in this case the Fatah movement led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas responded to calls by Lebanese authorities to campaign against Fatah Islam since fighting broke out May 20.
It coincided with Abbas’ renewed denunciation of the group, whose few hundred members embrace al-Qaida-style militancy and doctrine and are suspected of having links to Osama bin Laden’s network.”
You’re welcome. I’ll keep you in mind for future interesting stories.
It appears Sean’s companion has hit the target dead on with “Islamberg”. NW Granny posted the latest update.

“Iran says Bushehr fuel ready”
Published: June 5, 2007 at 9:30 AM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TEHRAN, June 5 (UPI) — Tehran says Russia has prepared fuel for the Bushehr nuclear plant, and the fuel is ready to be shipped to bring Iran’s first nuclear plant online.
Russia’s state-owned nuclear export arm is building the plant. Although it’s not believed to have any potential weapons capability, the rest of Iran’s nuclear program has brought heat to Bushehr. Iran has accused Russia of playing politics with the project.
Iranian news Press TV quoted an expert at Russia’s fuel-making plant saying shipments can be sent just days after an order is made.
“The special atomic fuel for the Bushehr power plant was stored in containers in the presence of Iranian experts,” said Alexander Ustyugov of the Novosibirsk chemical concentrates plant.
The plant is to be test run in September and can start operating six months after it receives fuel.”
Very interesting connection between Adnan and Farouk Razac. Thanks to you both for excellent info.

“Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Children at Bus Stop”
June 5, 2007 - 12:35pm
ARTICLE: “LA PLATA, Md. - Charles County Sheriff’s Department deputies have arrested the driver of a car they say struck four pedestrians near a La Plata elementary school.
Major Joe Montminy says three young children and a 17-year-old were sitting on a curb waiting for a school bus when a vehicle veered from the roadway and struck them.
It happened at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Glen Albin Road and Little Creek Lane.”
Police were holding two suspects on Tuesday, after being linked to a homemade bomb found in a stolen car on Monday. The bomb was defused by miitary experts. Details remained sketchy after the bomb was found in the car on Monday afternoon. The intended use of the bomb was unclear.
The car had been towed into a Falck towing firm's garage in Bergen and was being examined by police investigators. When the device resembling a bomb was found, the entire neighborhood was evacuated and special forces were called in. A military bomb unit managed to defuse the device, which they described as a homemade firebomb. Police were already investigating the car theft when the bomb was found. Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported that one suspect was called in for questioning Monday night.
Two arrests were later made and NRK reported Tuesday afternoon that the two suspects had confirmed to police that they placed the bomb in the car.

Saudis arrest three al-Qaeda suspects
5th June 2007
Saudi Arabia says it has arrested three suspected al-Qaeda militants involved in spreading the group's ideology through the internet.
The Interior Ministry identified two of them in a statement by their aliases Abu Osaid al-Falluji and Abu Abdullah al-Najdi and said the arrests were part of a crackdown on terrorism and "misleading media that seeks to spread their deviant ideology". "They have targeted the youth of the nation with their deceptive calls in the hope of recruiting some of them to achieve their aims and carry out hateful strategies that target the homeland and the citizens, security and resources," it said.
It said Falluji, a Saudi, was involved in "preparing terrorist operations and encouraging people to take part in them and contacting several entities directly to seek funding and help in carrying out (operations) in the homeland". Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said earlier the three were members of al-Qaeda and that one of them was involved in plans to hit the kingdom's oil industry.
The ministry said Najdi, also a Saudi, re-published an internet magazine that was started by al-Qaeda, Sawt al-Jihad, calling for attacks on the kingdom's oil industry. The third suspect was a foreign resident suspected of preparing to publish a magazine for al-Qaeda, which Saudi Arabia calls a "deviant group".
Islamic militants swearing allegiance to al-Qaeda launched a violent campaign to topple the Saudi monarchy in 2003, carrying out suicide bomb attacks on foreign nationals and government installations, including the oil industry. Tough security measures and a powerful publicity campaign helped crush the violence but analysts and diplomats have said the underlying currents of radical Islamic ideology and anger at Western policy in the region remain strong.

“Foundations bankrolling advocates for aliens”
By Sean Lengell
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
June 6, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Wealthy philanthropic foundations are helping bankroll the pro-immigration movement, while groups advocating for tighter control of U.S. borders say they take a more grass-roots approach to raising money.
The Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation and Democratic activist George Soros are among the liberal funders that have donated millions of dollars to pro-immigration groups, as the Senate continues its debate on a contentious bill that would overhaul the nation’s immigration policy.
Three of the nation’s biggest and most influential pro-immigration groups — the National Immigration Forum, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) — collectively received more than $3.25 million from Ford Foundation since 2005.”

“Iraq suicide bombing ‘kills 15’”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “At least 15 people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack near the Iraqi city of Falluja, police and the US military said.
At least 13 people were also wounded when the attacker detonated the car bomb in a market place, they said.
The attack came as the US admitted its security “surge” in and around Baghdad faced serious challenges.
A US security review said coalition forces controlled fewer than one-third of Baghdad’s neighbourhoods.
One report said the market bomb in Amiriyah, in Anbar province, targeted elders of the al-Buissa tribe, most of whom are anti-al-Qaeda.
Police told the Associated Press news agency the bomb exploded as the elders met to try to resolve a tribal dispute in the town, 65km (40 miles) west of Baghdad.
In another incident, Iraqi police said they shot dead a suspected suicide bomber as she tried to detonate her bomb at a Baghdad recruitment centre. The shots triggered her explosive belt, police said.
Three police recruits received minor wounds from the explosion. The woman died.”

Iran and al-Qaeda in Iraq
January 6, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: Iranian involvement with al-Qaeda and other Sunni jihadis groups is nothing new, however the conventional wisdom in media and some intelligence circles is Shia Iran could never cooperate with Sunni al-Qaeda due to ideological differences. This ignores a mountain of evidence to the contrary, such as Irans sheltering of over 100 al-Qaeda leaders, including Said bin Laden, Osamas son, and Saif al-Adel, al-Qaedas strategic planner, or Iranian support of Somalias Sunni Islamic Courts by providing arms and training.
