Thompson In - Yes!

Thompson In
If you believe this report – and we do – former Sen. Fred Thompson will indeed throw his hat in the ring for president of the United States. As many readers of the GOPNation.com know, we endorsed Thompson, believing he is the best candidate at the right time to maintain the White House for the GOP. An Thompson entry would shake up the Republican primary process almost immediately and in our opinion, cause one or two GOP candidates to withdrawel from the race before the end of summer. Stay tuned.

Gingrich Getting Closer
Meanwhile, it looks like former GOP Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is getting ever closer to his own race for the presidency. In what can only be described as the must-read story of this early week, the New Yorker’s Jeffrey Goldberg paints a GOP in turmoil with its leaders (including Gingrich) at each other’s throats over the party’s losses in 2006 and dwindling chances in 2008. Expect lots of Rove bashing in this piece.

Zoellick at World Bank
President Bush is expected to name deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick to head the World Bank. Zoellick would replace the disgraced Paul Wolfowitz who resigned last week. Hmm, another Bush crony in another plum position. Yeah, that will work out.

Did you hear?
The mainstream press didn’t tell you but we will: gas prices have started to fall, thanks in part to higher inventories and of course, the passage of Memorial Day. Today’s average stands at 3.197/gallon – down 3 cents from the high set on May 24. Don’t worry, any Fourth of July increase will surely be reported as a price surge by the press, no matter how much the prices fall between now and then.

Drudge Headline of the Day
Gotta love this: “I Saw The Climate Change”, describing Nancy Pelosi’s reaction to her recent trip to Greenland. Classic liberalism.

I agree with you about Gingrich. He has broken the 11th Commandment in the worse possible way, trashing a Republican President over the War. He cannot recover from that, IMHO.

And anybody who lends the slightest credence to the Human-Caused Global Warming hoo-ha is disqualified. This Global Warming nonsense is the tool the Left will use to sieze control of the means of production of this Country. It must be opposed at every turn.

Being a little bit in favor of Kyoto is like being a little bit pregnant. The Lefties are not interested in half-measures, this time.

Thompson has been in for a while. He has been giving campaign speeches all over the place, accumulating endorsements, and picking up staff. Now he is going to start to raise money. I think there is no doubt Thompson is in.

For me it’s Gingrich’s personality. It’s a good thing to be confident and assertive, but he projects a superiority complex that just irritates me. Maybe he’s not really that way, but this is the impression I get and it just turns me off. And I wonder how much of that bravado he displays would really translate into action.

I like Fred’s plain speaking style. I just hope it translates into effective action as President. One of the problems we voters have is that we have a lot of candidates talking the talk, but I wonder how many of them can walk the walk. In this age of terrorism and pourous borders (among other things), we need a guy who will be tough, not just talk tough.

I'l like nothing more than to see a Thompson/Hunter ticket.
That would lock up the White House for at least the next 16 years!

No, don’t worry, McCain’s numbers didn’t go up. That polling firm always had McCain in first. Iowa, having caucuses is prone to special sauce.

Rasmussen, which tracks week to week has McCain fading to third, behind Romney. He’ll be in 4th by the 4th.

I think you have identified the way for Hunter to make it onto the national scene. I don’t know if they are close, but that would be a formidable ticket.

Thompson needs to stop playing coy like some insecure teenager, hold a press conference flat-out condemning the sell-out of America to special interests and the “open borders” crowd, and announce he’s here to help take our country back.

Today. Take that stand. Inspire those, who would vote for you.

Because frankly, we’re about to quit. This president, and this party.

Probably true. There will be an initial rush of support for Thompson. Then the dynamics will shift again as voters are finally able to look at and hear Thompson on the same stage as the other candidates. Thompson will be a strong candidate, but he will probably not become the runaway favorite. Thompson might never be stronger than he will appear two weeks aftr his official entry into the race.

I like Thompson, but he's not without flaws. McCain-Feingold leads the list of fiascoes he was responsible for. Beyond that, he has almost NO executive experience. He has never led anything larger than his own personal senate staff. He looks a lot like Obama and Hillary in that respect.

It would be a way for Hunter to get the "name recognition" his critics say he needs.

Why would Fred announce that he is “in” when he gets 10 times more mileage out of these stupid “we REALLY believe he’s going to announce this time” announcements?

Because there's only so long you can play that card before it gets stale, and sooner or later, he's going to need to raise money and build ground organization.

The way I've read this... he goes semi-official on June 4, and due to the nature of the reporting requirements, he has a limited time to raise money that does not have to be disclosed on fundraising reports until Q3 (September). He's met his TV/movie contractual obligations, so those are behind him. I'm not sure what this does to the ABC Radio deal -- shouldn't change things yet because he's not fully "official".
