Mironov Tells Kyoto Experts The World Is Getting Cooler
By Simon Shuster
Staff Writer

Sergei Mironov

ST. PETERSBURG -- It was a failure from the start. Russia's biggest conference on the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to fight global warming, began with a speech from a top official who denied that global warming even exists.

"In reality, the scientific basis for the protocol is fairly weak," Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov told a crowded opening session of the two-day conference Thursday, which drew more than 200 environmental experts and carbon market participants from around the world. "In the opinion of many experts, the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere does not have any effect on the climate."

On this point, Mironov stands on the fringes of global scientific opinion. A growing consensus has formed among top scientists and politicians, who have been warning governments to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being spewed into the atmosphere. The Kyoto Protocol, first signed in 1997, created a system of financial incentives for doing this.

The guy who invented carbon credits has to be a descendant of P.T. Barnum...

They already switched from the “Coming Ice Age” back in the 0’s to “Global Warming” now. Why they are taken seriously is completely beyond my comprehension.

"Are you old enough to remember about 25 years ago when the same people said that we were going to DIE OF THE COLD IN THE DARK?"

And then some. I got fed the full line of BS about Global Cooling in high school. The world was going to end due to starvation, because the crops wouldn't grow in the cold.

Projects with no economic value spawned to benefit "lawyers and brokers" -- sounds like government as usual.
How can you say "no economic value"? Think of all those new swimming pools the lawyers'n'brokers will be able to buy!

“At what point does Gore say, “God, what a fool I must look like !” ?” ~ chiller

Excerpt from item below:

Q How cynical do you think Gore is?

A It’s hard for me to tell. I think he’s either cynical or crazy. But he has certainly cashed in on something. And ‘cash in’ is the word.

The movie has cleared $50-million.

He charges $100,000-$150,000 a lecture.

He’s co-founder of Global Investment Management, which invests in solar and wind and so on.

So he is literally shilling for his own companies.

And he’s on the on the board of Lehman Brothers who want to be the primary brokerage for emission permits.

Q That sounds more cynical, less crazy.

A I think his aim is not to be president. It’s to be a billionaire. ..”

"..the biggest gains from Kyoto go to the environment."

Not so.

"..Energy-intensive industries are already moving to China, the main beneficiary by far from the Kyoto-CDM scheme.

Wow, even the Russians are agreeing on this now. They’re right and our politicians are wrong. Again (just like Kosovo). I think the world is starting to catch on to this, that Gore is just a moron who knows nothing about science and is only spreading propaganda. The Brits, Aussies, Canadians, Swedes, and now the Russians are all slamming Gore for this and/or showing The Great Global Warming Swindle. Even some meteorologists here agree that Gore’s film is BS. We’re all tired of hearing about a guy who majored in poli-sci try to tell us that we’re screwing up the climate when he knows squat about science himself. Let’s hope this keeps spreading.

“...all they can shoot back is “the majority state the debate is over.” ~ longtermmemmory

Exactly.

“...It is on the topic of “scientific consensus,” Newtonian or otherwise, that Gore shows his most troubling side, a robust and aggressive anti-intellectualism that ill fits his coming role as author of a book to be called The Attack on Reason. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAuzdGYrMjA

It is silly to list scientists who support or don’t support the view that human activities can affect temperature, because there is no scientist who thinks they can’t.

It is silly to take a poll among climate scientists about how much of the one-degree rise in temperature they think has been caused by human activities rather than natural variation, latent cycles, or chaos (and this applies as well to the statisticians who specialize in the mathematical models that try to separate the natural from the human “signal”) because the degree of uncertainty reduces the answer to an educated guess.

Most importantly, there is no such thing as a scientific debate over that complex issue that can be “over” (as Gore and environmental lobbyists have said since 1988, repeatedly), because scientists don’t debate — they investigate. ...”

“If you truly believe that there is no God and that mankind is the center of all things then mankind must be causing climate change. The alternative is that THEY have no control over the way the climate changes and this, to their narcissistic minds, is truly frightening.” ~ InABunkerUnderSF

Yes it is frightening to them.

“..Moreover, a survey given to representatives of the National Academy of Sciences that was later published in a 1998 volume of the Journal of Nature confirms that 73% of its members are atheist and 20% are agnostic. 1 In the same article, Oxford University scientist Peter Atkins said, “You clearly can be a scientist and have religious beliefs. But I don’t think you can be a real scientist in the deepest sense of the word because they are such alien categories of knowledge.” http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/news/file002.html- Also quoted by science editor Roger Highfield inThe Daily Telegraph (London), 3 April 1997.

*

“...This is why the left doesn’t really have ideas but icons — including “iconic ideas.” It is an insidious and sinister process, because there is great psychological pressure on all us of to bow down before these false gods, as if they were actually sacred (for example, the many fawning MSM tributes to “the Goreacle”). And there is absolutely no symmetry in this.

For example, if a conservative steps in one of the left’s many sacred cowpies, there is a good chance that his career will be ruined. But if a leftist offends what is actually sacred, he will be praised as someone who “speaks truth to power.” ...

...The point is that nearly every one of the leftists’s core beliefs is not a proper idea but an icon, whether it is manmade global warming, being “for the little guy,” affirmative action, abortion, homosexual behavior, “peace,” “progress,” multiculturalism, diversity — in fact, “progressive” is the quintessence of a meaningless icon, since it bears no relationship to progress and promotes economic and social policies that ensure not just a lack of progress, but regression. For example, the “peace movement” can only bring about more war, just as affirmative action can only bring about harm to blacks. ...” ~ Robert W.Godwin [Gagdad Bob], Ph.D (a clinical psychologist whose interdisciplinary work has focused on the relationship between contemporary psychoanalysis, chaos theory, and quantum physics.”

Climate Change/Carbon Offsets is pure Capitalism. They have created a Need based product to sell to the world market.

Maybe you're being sarcastic with your comment about changing the law to "require" the product to be sold? If it's pure "capitalism" as you say, then why do the carbon offsets have to be centrally enforced through Kyoto? If it's truly a need-based program and not a top-down socialist grab for power, wouldn't venture capitalists see the profit potential in these enterprises without being forced to? Wouldn't the profits flow to investors and not lawyers and brokers? It's pure totalitarian socialism on a worldwide scale.

Four years of private school education and they can plant trees.

I remember going to an information night for Northwestern University (when my eldest was looking at schools with good music programs). The whole emphasis seemed to be on the student being able to "find themselves" during the four years at Northwestern by taking whatever classes they wanted.

My daughter picked this up and said she like the idea of being able to just "find herself". I told her if she was that unsure about what direction she wanted to go; she could "find herself" at a state university.

She ended up going to Indiana University at Bloomington because of the excellent music school they have there. Little did I know that if my great-grandparents had come into the country illegally, she might have been eligible for in-state tuition.

How about this:

Your dissertation that the population of the Earth is shrinking, not growing, is total rubbish.

Of course, it was easier for you to pick on my grammar than address my challenge. It’s a disturbing tactic I see more and more often on FR.
