Theory Of Gun Control Meets Reality Of Crime
NRA-ILA ^ | 5/26/07

Friday, May 25, 2007

A May 15 story in The Plain Dealer (Cleveland, Ohio) serves as a good reminder of how a person’s support for gun control often changes after a personal experience with crime.

State Representative Michael DeBose (D-12) of Cleveland was an opponent of Right-to-Carry, having voted against the measure twice. All that changed on the night of May 1, when he was confronted by two men, one of whom was wielding a gun. On that night, Rep. DeBose’s sense of security in his neighborhood changed, as did his view on lawful citizens being able to defend themselves.

Rep. DeBose was lucky—this time—that his running, screaming, and summons for help prevented him from being harmed. When asked how this recent experience may change the prism through which he views Right-to-Carry, Rep. DeBose was crystal clear: "I was wrong. I'm going to get a permit and so is my wife. I've changed my mind. You need a way to protect yourself and your family. I don't want to hurt anyone. But I never again want to be in the position where I'm approached by someone with a gun and I don't have one. There are too many people who are just evil and mean-spirited. They will hurt you for no reason. If more people were packing guns, it might serve as a deterrent.”

We welcome Rep. DeBose to the growing list of Right-to-Carry converts. While it is too bad it took a life-threatening situation to convert him, we hope he will share his experience, and his newfound respect for the right to self-defense, with his other colleagues who still don’t get it. It is our hope they won’t have to endure a similar experience to do so.

Another case of the new conservative is a former liberal who’s been mugged...

now, if only mayor daley of chicago would have the same life experience, and change his mind, illinois may be a reasonable place to live. if sb1007 10 round magazine ban is passed it will be harder for everyone who owns a gun to
defend ourselves, especially us older folks.

It’s better to have a gun and not need one than it is to need a gun and not have one.

Everyone is a liberal until they get mugged.

It is the natural corollary of Winston Churchill's statement:

“Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."

(At least it is attributed to Churchill but I have yet to find it in any book....)

I know people in the general area of Michigan Ave having to have to make a run for near by hotels to get away from muggers, too bad the Mayor can’t get the same.

It sounds like a Churchill quote but it is not:

“Gun control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her panty hose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.” — L. Neil Smith

There was a case from Detroit the other day when robbers attempted to hold up a law-abiding citizen. He was RTC and one of the robbers who pointed a gun at him was shot dead and the other who wielded a baseball bat fled the scene. Criminals should be aware holding up to wrong citizen could cost them their lives.

Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." -Manuel II Paleologus

I’ve heard similar sayings. I’ve never understood them. I was born despising all that is liberal. The older I get, the more sympathy I have for those poor fools that get suckered into the idiocy of the left. As a teenager, I would intentionally instigate arguments with people I knew were lefties. Even my own teachers. I once wrote a paper for a teacher whom I knew was a war protester and used quotes from those serving in the military with the most profanity. I went to VFW posts and interviewed the WWII vets about their opinion of vietnam protestors. That was some very colorful language. It went in my paper verbatum. When the teacher called me a liar and gave me an “F”, I played the tape of the conversations for him in class. I didn’t do so well in his class.

I have never been mugged, and I have been a conservative since high school. Some of us just get it...

I’ve never been mugged, but I used to be a Socialist (many years ago, in my youth). Fortunately I grew up, joined the Navy and I haven’t looked back since.

Huh? You older folks forgot grammar school sentence structure, conventions (capitalizing proper nouns, the first word of a sentence), and basic communication skills. What is "sb1007?" Is that a new night club?
