WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration and key congressional Democrats and Republicans stepped up their efforts to sell a broad immigration compromise Thursday as lawmakers braced for a public backlash at home.
"Many Americans are rightly skeptical about immigration reform," President Bush said in a Rose Garden news conference. "This bill provides the best chance to reform our immigration system and help us make certain we know who's in our country and where they are."

TR was the quintessential American and a true Renaissance man whose like has been seen only once in a Century or so. A well-educated man, he was deeply interested in, and familiar with science and history. At the same time, he was a great athlete and could ride a horse, shoot a gun and was an avid big-game hunter. He even served as a law enforcement official in the west, personally tracking down “badmen”. Thanks to him, we have the National Park System. As New York City Commissioner of Police, he personally tracked down corrupt cops incognito and removed them from position. He was a tireless fighter against official corruption in government which is why he was sidelined to the Vice-Presidency by the corrupt New York State Republican political machine of the time. But the hand of God and Destiny plucked him from that obscure office when McKinley was assassinated. He was U.S. Secretary of the Navy and he wrote a book on naval history and warfare which became a standard military text on the subject for some time. He was fluent in several languages. He helped engineer the Spanish American War which freed Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines from colonial Spanish status and propelled the U.S. into the position of a great world power. Unlike other politic ans, he had the courage of his convictions and personally recruited a unit of soldiers and penally led them in combat, putting his own life on the line. AS President he was responsible for keeping the Kaiser from invading a South American country to recoup unpaid debts, thus enforcing the Monroe Doctrine. He was as tireless a fighter against robber barons as President as he was a fighter against official corruption earlier in life. After the left office, he became an avid explorer and tried to recruit a force of volunteers to fight in WW1, a conflict in which he lost one of his sons.
Teddy Roosevelt was one of the greatest Americans and Presidents in history and I respectfully suggest you read something about the man.

Mr. President, perhaps YOU should read at least the very first line of the bill which makes it clear that illegals get "probationary status" before any border security triggers are implemented. Once given this legal status, the bill expressly states that a former illegal alien "may not be considered an unauthorized alien." This is amnesty!
Enforce the laws George, that’s what you were elected to do. It is amnesty. Why don’t you do something right on the domestic front that might save your overall legacy.

True, but mobility allows the use of fewer troops overall (my 2 cents) to cover the same ground. Add an intrusion detection system using cameras, sound or the like and the quick reaction force drops in to bag the bad guys. I’ll leave it to the pros to pick the best option - what they really need are mission orders to do the job. That comes from on top. Unfortunately.

You may be right about the helos and tanks. I have always thought that “boots on the ground” was the best option. I just didn’t want the socialists and amnesty international to accuse us of overkill. :-)
