WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration and key congressional Democrats and Republicans stepped up their efforts to sell a broad immigration compromise Thursday as lawmakers braced for a public backlash at home.

"Many Americans are rightly skeptical about immigration reform," President Bush said in a Rose Garden news conference. "This bill provides the best chance to reform our immigration system and help us make certain we know who's in our country and where they are."

Can anyone tell me why I suddenly hear Fleetwood Mac singing “Little Lies” in the back of my mind?

My thinking is that machine gun nests are cheaper and easier to maintain. :-)

The 16th Amendment was proposed under the Taft Administration in July of 1909 and enacted into law in 1913.

I’m not sure what your problem is with the Federal Reserve Board, nor am I sure TR was involved with it either. Again, the popular election of Senators (Amendment XVII)was proposed in 1912 and approved in 1913.

“..don’t believe he was great at all. In fact, he goes on the top 10 worst presidents list.”

Incredible.

TR was the quintessential American and a true Renaissance man whose like has been seen only once in a Century or so. A well-educated man, he was deeply interested in, and familiar with science and history. At the same time, he was a great athlete and could ride a horse, shoot a gun and was an avid big-game hunter. He even served as a law enforcement official in the west, personally tracking down “badmen”. Thanks to him, we have the National Park System. As New York City Commissioner of Police, he personally tracked down corrupt cops incognito and removed them from position. He was a tireless fighter against official corruption in government which is why he was sidelined to the Vice-Presidency by the corrupt New York State Republican political machine of the time. But the hand of God and Destiny plucked him from that obscure office when McKinley was assassinated. He was U.S. Secretary of the Navy and he wrote a book on naval history and warfare which became a standard military text on the subject for some time. He was fluent in several languages. He helped engineer the Spanish American War which freed Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines from colonial Spanish status and propelled the U.S. into the position of a great world power. Unlike other politic ans, he had the courage of his convictions and personally recruited a unit of soldiers and penally led them in combat, putting his own life on the line. AS President he was responsible for keeping the Kaiser from invading a South American country to recoup unpaid debts, thus enforcing the Monroe Doctrine. He was as tireless a fighter against robber barons as President as he was a fighter against official corruption earlier in life. After the left office, he became an avid explorer and tried to recruit a force of volunteers to fight in WW1, a conflict in which he lost one of his sons.

Teddy Roosevelt was one of the greatest Americans and Presidents in history and I respectfully suggest you read something about the man.

What did Coolidge ever do?

Harding was a corrupt, pathetic degenerate. What did he accomplish?

TR - see my response to OBLOMOV.

I said perhaps Harry Truman - but at least he had the guts to drop a nuclear bomb on Hieroshima and Nagasaki. Roles reversed, neither of the Bushes would have done so.

What the hell did Cooleidge EVER do except not run for a Second term???

Sorry about the mistype - I changed Dwight’s name and religion too!

"This bill does not grant amnesty. Amnesty is forgiveness without a penalty," Bush said.

Mr. President, perhaps YOU should read at least the very first line of the bill which makes it clear that illegals get "probationary status" before any border security triggers are implemented. Once given this legal status, the bill expressly states that a former illegal alien "may not be considered an unauthorized alien." This is amnesty!

Enforce the laws George, that’s what you were elected to do. It is amnesty. Why don’t you do something right on the domestic front that might save your overall legacy.

I believe that the tax amnesty provision is unconstitutional. It could be argued that forgiving taxes to a specific racial group and not others violates the civil rights of whites, blacks etc.

I demand tax amnesty also !!

True, but mobility allows the use of fewer troops overall (my 2 cents) to cover the same ground. Add an intrusion detection system using cameras, sound or the like and the quick reaction force drops in to bag the bad guys. I’ll leave it to the pros to pick the best option - what they really need are mission orders to do the job. That comes from on top. Unfortunately.

Presidents should ONLY be elected for one six year term.

Well said, and furthermore they'll get more work done in that six years instead of thinking about re-election the minute they win the original term.

Yes, it does have to come from the top and that is not going to happen.

You may be right about the helos and tanks. I have always thought that “boots on the ground” was the best option. I just didn’t want the socialists and amnesty international to accuse us of overkill. :-)

On the other hand, it might be fun to hear about the socialists warning us of impending doom, throwing up, having to change their underwear, slashing their wrists, etc.

Cheney’s domestic policy advisor was one of the biggest open border lobbyists around and in large part helped to destroy Prop. 187 in California. I think Cheney is on board with amnesty.

Namely Cesar Conda, former domestic policy advisor for Cheney

and Grover Norquist, Bush’s main immigration man, whose brother David Norquist is Chief Financial Officer at the Department of Homeland Security. His wife also works for Bush at USAID, a palestinian Muslim.

Cesar Conda earned the wraith of the Ludwig von Mises Institute: “Joining in this richly-funded campaign of hysteria and smear was the entire official libertarian (or Left-libertarian) movement, including virtually every “free-market” and “libertarian” think tank except the Mises Institute. ... For their part, the neo-conservative and official libertarian think tanks joined the elite condemnation of Prop. 187. Working closely with Stephen Moore of the Cato Institute, Cesar Conda of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution circulated a statement against the measure that was signed by individuals at the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, the Manhattan Institute, the Reason Foundation, and even the Competitive Enterprise Institute.” [13]

In a letter to the WSJ signed with Grover Norquist, Tamar Jacoby, Newt Gingrich, Cesar Conda and others he promoted Bush/Kennedy Amnesty as the only workable approach.

snip] The Wall Street Journal February 6, 2004 Welcome to America

President Bush has proposed a new legal path to work in the U.S. through a temporary worker program that will match willing workers with willing employers. We applaud the president and believe his approach holds great promise to reduce illegal immigration and establish a humane, orderly, and economically sensible approach to migration that will aid homeland security and free up border-security assets to focus on genuine threats. The president has shown courage by calling on Congress to place reality over rhetoric and recognize that those already working here outside the law are unlikely to leave. Congress can fulfill its role by establishing sufficient increases in legal immigration and paths to permanent residence to enable more workers to stay, assimilate, and become part of America.

Immigrants are crucial to our competitiveness and future labor and economic growth, as well as our military strength. Our country’s welcoming attitude to immigrants will permit the U.S. to grow and prosper, as the populations of many other nations stagnate and decline.
