...he was stunned to see two large Confederate flags flying from trucks...emblazoned with the words "The South Shall Rise Again." I'm stunned, too, that people still think it is cool to fly this flag. Our society should bury these flags -- not flaunt them...because the Confederate flag symbolizes racial tyranny to so many... ...This flag doesn't belong on city streets, in videos or in the middle of civil discussion. It belongs in our past -- in museums and in history books -- along with the ideas it represents.

I’m a life-long Northerner, and I used to occasionally see the Confederate flag back in the hippy days, used - so I assumed - as sort of a symbol of rebellion and non-conformity. I certainly don’t think those hippies were using it as a way of approving slavery or racial discrimination.
When it is used by Southerners, I see it as a symbol of regional pride, not as a defense of slavery or even necessarily as a defense of the Confederacy. Northerners who condemn it conveniently forget the history of de facto segregation and racial discrimination which was pervasive throughout the whole country for a hundred years after the Civil War. Should we therefore also ban the Stars and Stripes?
Sounds like a pointing out of hypocrisy to me.
Of course, the North didn’t fight the South over slavery. They fought to force them to remain in the Union at the point of a gun.
The British opinion of all this was interesting, to say the least. “So, it’s OK to secede from us, but damn them from trying to secede from you.”
These sorts of things happen when you seize a nation's sovereign territory (federal armories, etc.) and fire on its troops.
‘Lets see. Where are all the limp-wristed, sissy-boy, liberal wusses currently concentrated? In the North or in the South?’
Psssssst. John Edwards. Henry Waxman. Lindsay Graham.
Just three that quickly popped into my head after reading the above, friend.
ping. I am too lazy to scroll thru and see if you are on this thread. If not, thought you might be interested.
To this Yankee, it means that Democrat redneck white trash want to go back to the good old days of segregation, lynching, and enslavement of black people.
Please stay up north, then. Far up north.’
(chuckle)
See? We do agree on something....
Sorry, I lost track. The video that I posted shows 702,000 for the North and about 650,000 for the South.
And before you ask, it was recorded at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum

The author comments “As many people is asking questions about this video I want to say that I recorded it at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.”
On the subject at hand, the display of the CBF doesn’t bother me as a symbol of historical significance or “Southern heritage”. I do wonder, however, why the loyal Sons of the South let it be continually co-opted and defiled by the racists and neo-gnatzi boobs. Y’all need to have a “come to Jesus” lesson for those boys and girls, every time they use that symbol to push their anti-Americanism (in all senses of the term).
You're right. It's just such a frequent misstatement of fact, that when I saw a fraction, I ran with it.
Actually that quote should be attribted to the screenwriter for "Gettysburg" because that's were it came from. I've never seen any evidence that Longstreet himself never said anything like that in any of the biographies I've read.
“I do wonder, however, why the loyal Sons of the South let it be continually co-opted and defiled by the racists and neo-gnatzi boobs.”
How do you propose that this be stopped?
As a teen, my daughter had one hung in her room. To her, it has something vaguely to do with Country Music and NASCAR. She didn't have a clue about the history of it till I explained it to her.
‘(Don’t know that Grant drank much while he was president, but his speeding was the bane of the D.C. police department.)’
He didn’t, and yes it was a concern for the DC constables. At one point a constable gave him a ticket.
I grew up in Pennsylvania during the 1950s and 1960s. To this day I resent how I was taught Civil War History. When I learned more on my own, I became convinced it was the war of Northern Aggression.
BTW, I do like wearing my Confederate Flag cufflinks. Good conversation starter.
A fair question.
The South is booming. Real estate values have skyrocketed. Prosperity is everywhere. Southern cities glitter--Atlanta, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Dallas, Houston, Charleston, Savannah, Memphis...uh...New Orleans excepted.
Ten of the biggest states are part of the old Confederacy: Texas, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Of the eleven Presidents who've come to office since 1945, four have been from the South (a dubious distinction, as it turns out): Johnson, Carter, Clinton, and G. W. Bush--six if you count Truman and G. H. W. Bush.
Southern influences have overwhelmed the nation--everything from Nashville music to the Masters and the Preakness to Martin Luther King to Southern born Oprah Winfrey (note tagline), Larry Brown, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Leontyne Price, Andy McDowell, Al Gore, George Clooney, Ted Turner, Fred Thompson--Queen Elizabeth drops in on Jamestown and the Kentucky Derby--even Jane Fonda, Elton John, and Ben Affleck can't resist at least a pied a terre there.
Try as one might, it's hard to deny. Stop fighting it; fix yourself a mint julip or a glass of North Carolina wine; and book tickets for the Spoleto Festival while you watch Alton Brown.
I'll take the Confederate flag any day of the week over the Mexican flags almost everywhere I turn!!!
Here Here! You are RIGHT on the money with that post.
