The trouble in Jena started with the nooses. Then it rumbled along the town's racial fault lines. Finally, it exploded into months of violence between blacks and whites.

Are you sure? What was the first act in this case? The hanging of the nooses? What preceeded the hanging of the nooses? Did you not notice that the article was somewhat obscure on this point? What do you think the author's agenda is? Does his agenda make you wonder what was left out of the narrative between the visit to the administrator by the black kids requesting "permission" to sit under the tree and the subsequent hanging of the nooses? (And doesn't the very idea that the black kids sought this "permission" ring false to you? Whose version is this? The administrator's?)

Anyone who can equate symbolisim, however vicious, with pulling a gun has a problem rationality.
I just found this thread and it is disturbing.
I have visited the States quite a few times,to visit family,see tourist site etc.However,this shows an America I didnt see.Fortunately I know the American Public is not like this at all,and you get psychotic barmpots in every society-but-these reports only give more ammo to the America-hating lefties over here,who are delighted whenever things like this crop up.God forbid I’m not suggesting that stuff like this should be swept under the carpet,but some of you might want to think about what you type in.
Whilst in the States,the only negative vibes I got were in Washington.No one started on me,but I got stares and catcalls while walking past kids coming out of an 80 or so per cent African American School,and the next day when I told a group of panhandlers in Farragut Sq to piss off,one of them shouted “Loo what you done to me,Chains and Slavery”.
A couple of days later I went down to Virginia to see my family and we drove as far as Wilmington North Carolina.We met white and black and encountered no mither at all,every one was sound.
The point I am trying to make is that I was warned (by both Yanks and Limies) that anywhere immediately south of Washington was full of bothwhite Nazis and black Panthers.
So I speak as I find.

I have been living in the US for almost 8 years now and neither I or my family have seen or experienced any racial incidents since we have been here. I know that it exists out there, but fortunately my children have never been targeted by any minority groups simply because they were white. They have also not seen any minority groups targeted by anyone because they were red, black or yellow either.
Ironically, my two boys have been targeted by other white kids because they are considered “outsiders” living here in the south. That term does not just apply to us because we are Canadian’s, but to anyone not born and raised here. At first we thought that the black kids were behind the bullying as my one son was intimidated at first by them when he first started going to school here, but after talking with him he said they were never a problem and that they were nice to him - it was the white kids who were the problem.
My first son is graduating from Middle School next month and that day can’t come soon enough for him. There are some white kids at his school that taunt him every day with names I won’t even repeat here, but nevertheless he is an AB student, on the Honor Society, and well liked by the girls as he is a handsome boy. His teachers like him and watch out for him as he is sometimes affraid to walk the hallways alone as there are many kids who tell him that he better watch his back.
He is now playing on an under 15 basketball team over in Wilmington and he is one of 3 white kids on that team and they all get along like brothers and are friends off the court.
My point in all this is that there are good & bad people out there, but the biggest problem is that many of the children who have taunted my son and made his Middle School experience a living hell are a product of their parents - who don’t seem to give a damn about how they do at school. Those kids are failing school and don’t seem to care either & so they trouble those who are trying hard to make the grade.
IMHO you can only eradicate racism by education.
What do you think should have happened to the kids that hung the nooses in the tree?...
...pretty much what did happen to them, suspension...maybe a little longer would have benn appropriate, as well as a public apology...
...regarding the back and forth with biased reporting, please note that the author when describing the black on white incidents uses the terms ‘supposedly’ and ‘allegedly’, while using no such disclaimer on the white on black events...clear enough evidence of slant to anybody, I would think...
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I refuse to buy into "Racism!" stories while Knoxville Massacre is being covereed up. I think I'm going to invest in a 1" long violin for Racism stories.
My advice make sure one of your 2 lads carries an empty sock.They should stay together during the day,hone in on the main troublemaker on the way home,put a hefty stone inside the sock, then give him such a pasting that they will have no more mither,I promise you,it worked for me.
I know it sounds nasty but unfortunately the world is a harsh and nasty place.
Additionally (it may not work in America’s South)get them a couple of english team’s soccer shirts,to help with teir reputation.
Yes, the old double standard. In the La incident the minority blacks were simply trying to undo a racial hang over from olden days. In your case, whites doing the same would be instigating a racial incident.

Sounds like you need to move. The most intimidation I’ve ever experienced has come from white trash. There are black AND white sections of town I just don’t visit.

Yes,but if you talk to many blacks over 40,they will tell you they often feel under constant threats from WHITES.
I think both groups exaggerate this racial threat from”the other”.I am a white guy,older and very conservative looking,who spends a lot of time with blacks at various schools.I have RARELY felt threatened in the slightest.
On the other hand,I have been on rafting and camping trips with black adult co-workers who spent weeks fearing what the”redneck country crackers”would do to them.And guess what?Not a problem.Everyone in Crackerville was very friendly toward them.
I was NOT South bashing.I spent my formidable years in California.There is no racial slurs or incidents I witnessed in The South that I hadn’t first seen in good old liberal Cali.
