DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A lawyer for Asian students caught in a cheating scandal at Duke's business school says they were punished more severely than others.
Durham lawyer Robert Ekstrand represents 16 students. He says most of those caught in the scandal didn't understand the honor code because they'd been in the country less than a year. Ekstrand has filed appeals for the students.
He says students quickly wrote confessions after a faculty investigator pressured them to admit wrongdoing, even though some didn't understand the allegations.
The scandal began when professors at Duke's Fuqua School of Business noticed similarities in students' take-home exams. Thirty-four graduate students were convicted of cheating. The school expelled nine students and gave 1-year suspensions and a failing grade to 15 of them. The remaining students received failing grades.

Yes, and I expect the female and children minority members suffered even more than the men students.
Take home exams? LOL, that’s borderline entrapment.
This shows why the umbrella of Christianity and not "ethics" should be spread father and wider.
Well we already know the Duke faculty are racists.
Sheesh, it’s not like they put insecticide in pet food additives or something...
Playing the race issue.
“...didn’t understand the honor code because they’d been in the country less than a year.”
Translation: The Asians have very low ethical standards, you know. They were not aware that they would be expected to rise to our level. How could they have been? Asians student are not very bright and their parents... well, don’t get me started.
LOL
Yep and many countries, even Western countries have different standards. Remember the ancient Spartan boys being expected to steal their food but not get caught.
At the Gerrardo Barrios Military School in El Salvador the defacto code is the opposite of West Point’s Honor Code. Salvadoran cadets are expected to band together and show loyalty to each other and not the administrators. The school is brutal and the “cooperate and graduate” mantra is taken to an extreme. Thus each class (tanda) graduates with a fierce and long standing loyalty...to each other. The young officer on the ground knows the young officer flying the helicopter gunship in his support and vice versa. Still, even in El Salvador, if you get caught cheating, pow, bam, smash...
Obvious cheating. All the right answers were the same. Proof enough.
What do they expect with take home exams?
Sigh...Memories of college...I mean, what a bunch of cheaters!!!!
I think the faculty should buy a full-page ad giving the Asians needed support!!!
Did somebody switch the memeograph test originals from the dumpster?
“Asians student are not very bright and their parents... well, dont get me started.” This is the opposite of what has been my experience. The Asians in my classes were always very bright and very hard workers. They didn’t need to cheat. Perhaps the standards for getting into Duke if you are an Asian have been lowered.
Lol!
Hey! Where’d you get that picture of me? I mean, . . . er, . . . ah . . .
Nevermind. That’s not me. Really. Honest. I mean. Like I never cheated.
-a take home test? Was it clearly forbidden to use books, internet or friends to get the answers? rme
Seriously, the fact that the argument is being made doesn't make it true. The cheaters got caught. Now they're making excuses . . . it doesn't get any more complicated.
