Forget the phrase "Where in the World is Matt Lauer"? How about "Where in the World is George Allen"? I found him! I interviewed him yesterday at his home near Mount Vernon in Virginia because I'm working on a future story about the legacy of Ronald Reagan and how that is impacting the 2008 GOP presidential race. Allen knew Ronald Reagan very well and so did his father. He is now heavily involved in promoting the Reagan Ranch Center and the conservative values that the group teaches to high school and college students around the country,
Anyhow, at the end of the interview I asked him his thoughts on the 2008 Presidential race. You can watch the 6 minute clip above. Now, let me say a few things. He really didn't want to come out and talk forcefully for or against any candidate so realizing that, I did not try and pin him down. So all you hard nosed readers who wanted me to 'pin him down", sorry you're not going to get it. Allen wasn't going to go there and leading him there wasn't going to matter. Allen was in full "11th commandment mode" (don't talk negatively about a fellow Republican) He does however offer some guidance for voters when choosing a candidate.
Let's remember here. George Allen could have been the "Reagan conservative" candidate that many within the GOP are longing for. But after what happened last November, those plans are on hold indefintely.
Ping
MAKAKA!
OK, it was a lousy race back in 2006 that Mr. Allen ran. But I am still stupified that uttering the word “macaca” is what slammed the door behind him.
Macaca!!!!!!!!!
Yea, if only he didn’t utter that word we would have an actual conservative to rally around.
Thankfully, he did utter it, so we don't have to spend another campaign season playing "let's pretend this dumbass isn't a dumbass" with yet another "actual conservative".
Go pound sand rino.
nonsense. Macaca was only a symptom, not the disease. the fact is Allen turned out to be an utter lightweight who couldn’t hold what was thought to be a reasonably safe seat against a man who had never before ran in a political campaign
Allen wasn’t ready for prime time
When you lose by 10,000 votes, almost ANYTHING can be said to be “the deciding factor”.
So My personal “deciding factor” was when his official campaign released selected quotes from James Webb’s military fiction and claimed the vulgarity and profanity made him unfit for office.
Certainly it was something voters might be interested in, but when a campaign releases something, they are saying that THEY believe it should be important.
But military men seem to really like Webb’s books. Heck, John McCain wrote a cover for one of the books. Some are “required reading” in military circles.
We have a large military contingent in Virginia, and I think a lot of them cut out on Allen after he insulted them with that release.
I would like to think that Virginia - my home state - has enough men and women of righteous character and ability, that George Allen will NEVER be ready or needed in "prime time"...
He blew his chance...quickly, recklessly and foolishly with great harm to conservatives...
Screw him..
Thank heaven for little favors. The GOP's strange love affair and man crushes with slow witted, flat footed good old boys mysteriously continues!
Interesting that he seems to like duncan hunter a lot.
Don’t insult George Bush by comparing him to Allen. I doubt the President would have been dumb enough to look STRAIGHT INTO A CAMERA and say a funny foreign word to describe a dark skinned person.
Nope. The race was lost before that happened.
I find it hard to believe that Sen. Allen doesn’t want to opine on a Presidential candidate yet. He has no qualms about endorsing a tax and spend “RINO”, Walter Stosch, who is being challenged by a conservative republican in a primary race here in Virginia.
We should not take advice from losers.
Allen for Senator? Does this mean Warner is retiring? The Republican Party is being destroyed by GWB and John McCain. Maybe Allen should try an independent line if he is really independent.
