But I am still stupified that uttering the word “macaca” is what slammed the door behind him.

"Macaca" was part of it, but I honestly think more people were offended by his comment "Welcome to the real Virginia, the real America" (or whatever his exact words were. It was kind of like he only thought the people in that small town were "real" and the rest of the commonwealth shouldn't count. Allen may disagree with the values of the voters in the "unreal" places like the DC suburbs, but you can't get elected without them. Stupid political blunder proving he was not ready for prime time. When you lose by 10,000 votes, almost ANYTHING can be said to be “the deciding factor”.

So My personal “deciding factor” was when his official campaign released selected quotes from James Webb’s military fiction and claimed the vulgarity and profanity made him unfit for office.

Certainly it was something voters might be interested in, but when a campaign releases something, they are saying that THEY believe it should be important.

But military men seem to really like Webb’s books. Heck, John McCain wrote a cover for one of the books. Some are “required reading” in military circles.

We have a large military contingent in Virginia, and I think a lot of them cut out on Allen after he insulted them with that release.

~sigh~

I'm going to ignore the other moronic posts on this thread, but once again, I have to explain to you people exactly what he meant by "welcome to the real Virginia."

He was speaking to his audience. Folks who live along the Kentucky border in an area that has been depressed for years. Folks in far Southwest Virginia feel abandoned by Richmond and by Washington.

For years, the chairman of the 9th Congressional District would start his convention speech by saying "From Jonesville, which is closer to the capitals of eight other states than it is to Richmond..."

So, when Allen said "Welcome to the real Virginia," he was speaking to his audience and they new exactly what he meant. You can hear their applause. Unfortunately, when it was on the video, it didn't play well in other parts of Virginia.

It was a careless thing to say when being videotaped. But it wasn't a "stupid political blunder."

And I can guarantee you candidates have been saying the exact same thing in SW Virginia for decades.
