LEFT LANE DRIVERS of AMERICA

“If you’re not a Left Lane Driver then get out of the Left Lane!”

Traffic has become increasingly congested and tempers flare as slower drivers occupy what has been historically referred to as the “fast lane”. It’s time to get that Left Lane back! It is our considered opinion that not only will traffic move more smoothly and more quickly once the Left Lane is used in the way it has been designed but also headaches, frustration, bad tempers and road rage will all be greatly reduced when this pressure valve is released. It’s time to reduce this unnecessary stress. It’s time that… LEFT LANE DRIVERS UNITE!

We invite you to join Left Lane Drivers of America, a growing, grassroots effort to reclaim the Left Lanes on our freeways and multiple lane highways. To do this, those of us who are genuine “Left Lane drivers” are politely but firmly reminding others what the Left Lane is for.

Yeah, funny how some people pick and choose what applies and what doesn’t, isn’t it?

Yeah Baby!

My high point is 116 mph, in my ‘66 Mustang, at age 16, with my dad, the Judge in the passenger seat :-)

The speed limit applies to drivers in all lanes. If Mr Magoo is driving at the speed limit, or above, Mr Left Lane driver has no complaint.

That would be known as the Hammer Lane...

And good luck. There are too many idiots out there who are 1, playing traffic cop, or 2, so indulged in self they absolutely refuse to move over and let others by... ...mainly not wanting to inconvenience themselves.

Nice thought though...

Why?

Becasue they are going over your perception of what is a "safe" speed.

My point was that it is not speed that hurts people. It is the abrupt stop.

The amusing part is that California has some very strange traffic laws. The speed limit is the speed limit -except if the speed limit is lower than the 85th percentile speed, in which case, you cannot be ticketed for exceeding the speed limit, unless you exceed the 85th percentile speed.

That’s no fun. There’s nothing better than a drive from one end of I-10 to the other!

Not to mention that it’s not speeding that kills, but speed differentials between two cars.

You’ve left out a few things from the driving time.

Stopping for additional fuel (most cars don’t drive 880 miles on one tank. Stopping to eat (most people need to have fuel during a 10.5 hour drive. Oh, and, if the posted speed limit is less than 85 miles per hour (say 65), the time it will take you to wait for the ticket the State Trooper issues you for traveling 20 miles per hour over the speed limit (plus the time it will take you to appear in court - the time off from work - etc. etc.).

Again, thanks for playing. This is fun.

I know a goofy lady at work who camps out in the left lane during rush hour, goes exactly the speed limit, and holds up a sign that says, “Speed limit 65 MPH!!” when people pass her on the right (because the normal pace is 75, not 65). This woman is living on borrowed time. I’m not advocating violence here, it is what it is.

It's against the law to do that in FL now. If you are blocking people from passing (even if they are speeding and you are not), then you can get a ticket.

Yes, that *is* a real speed limit sign. What was that about breaking the law about speed limits again?

We seem to have different perceptions of fun, then.

No not at all. The reality is the speed limit isn’t designed for fuel efficiency at all. At it’s best (ie when the transportation department is really thinking things through, this is usually in city driving) it’s designed for safety, at it’s worst (generally the freeways) it’s designed for revenue. Only during the 70s was anybody in charge actually willing to pretend fuel efficiency had anything to do with the speed limits, and of course according to the government organizations that pay attention to this stuff on the broad scope it really was all make believe, then they switched over to the whole “safety” thing but that turned out to be BS too (between the illusion of safety and increased road fatigue slower isn’t actually generically safer).

I better put on some of that tinfoil, too. I decided a few years ago that the traffic cops are not traditional cops anymore, they’re just tax collectors.

They’re all over a party that’s too loud because they’ll probably be able to nab some underage drinkers at $400 a pop. But if you get your car broken into and need a police report for the insurance company, they’ll show up three hours later, treat you like crap, and complain to you that you’re wasting their time.

Texas State Troopers do not write tickets for less than 100mph on rural interstates. They issue warnings as a matter of department policy - unless you are rude or combative, in which case the officer does have the option of giving you a ticket.

If you want to include fuel stops, simply include the time it takes to board the plane and for everyone to get situated (30-40 minutes) and it evens out. Food can be eaten both while on the road and in flight. In the case of the car trip, you may even bring food from home and reduce your cost.

You have a very nice car, but you don’t enjoy it. You have to get from here to there so you can get out of the car as fast as possible. It doesn’t make much sense.

You've got to be kidding.

Driving a race car for fun is different from sitting in traffic behind idiots who like sitting in traffic.

The size of this was unnecessary to make your point. But, some people enjoy yelling at others. What is this? A speed limit sign from the state of Montana (the speed laws of which were repealed)? Nowhere that I’m aware of now has a posted speed limit that states “Reasonable & Prudent” as the courts decided that was not enforceable or reasonable.

Agreed!! This kind of thing needs to be ticketed more. The guy going 95 MPH is an obvious hazard and they look for that, but the guy doing 15 MPH under the limit in the left lane is every bit as dangerous.

I gave up years ago trying to convince people that the left lane was for passing. Now I drive in the right lane on the Detroit freeways and usually have it all to myself. I can sometimes drive for miles in the right lane and pass everyone in the middle lanes. People don't like to drive in the right lane because of entrance ramps. I just adjust my speed up or down when cars are entering the freeway.

People get mad becauise they think I am "passing on the right". I'm not passing them on the right - I'm just driving faster than they are.
