I know it’s not a good idea.....until I moved to Florida, I never experienced it. But, I can’t let a selfish inconsiderate driver go unpunished.....

LOL!!! We could be driving/highway twins. Thanks for letting me know that the number of sane drivers on the road is much larger than I expected.
Perhaps one would wish to carry objects between those two points - and there are *many* items that you cannot carry on a plane or even check through.
Perhaps where you live. Where I live most vehicles I share the road with are big block V8’s (such as trucks - no not the toy ones - Suburbans, Escalades, Navigators, etc. etc. etc.). Seems most people around here are interested in safety versus economy (though it’s not safe to be in a compact car in this part of the country).
You have a very nice car, but you don’t enjoy it. You have to get from here to there so you can get out of the car as fast as possible.

But seriously, folks; on the highway I like to stay in cruise control whenever possible, and allow myself plenty of time to set up a pass. When I'm in the right lane and see I'm closing on a line of slower traffic I get out into the passing lane and override cruise enough to pass safely. But I am NOT going to speed up to 85 just because some clown wants to drive up my butt! I'll finish my pass normally then pull back in whether he likes it or not.
Every car has different gearing, that’s why saying “X speed is more fuel efficient” will always have problems. One car might cruise at an RPM sweet spot at that speed but they all won’t. My old 4 speed seemed to have been specifically designed to not do the speed limit, most of the commonly posted speed limits (25, 40 and 55) were all either winding out one gear or bottoming out the gear above terrible for fuel efficiency and unpleasant to drive.
Next to the dueling Magoos, my other personal favorite is the moron truck driver that just has to pass the other semi in the right lane, problem is he’s only going 0.025 MPH faster than the other semi so it only takes him a week to get by the other truck. At that point I become a proponent for immediate execution by citizen posse. Man just sitting here thinking about it makes my blood boil.
Your speaking in hypotheticals. The earlier poster was commenting on the boredom of driving from Elpaso to Dallas (or vise versa) due to the extreme distance involved. Thus, this was purely about commuting and not transporting things. Thanks for playing.
Yeah, I'm sure our engines are designed for optimum performace at out driving speeds.
On the other hand, going from 55 to 65 is not an appreciable difference in speed. Ignoring eveything else, drag at 55 would be proportional to 55 ** 3 (166,375 somethings), while at 65 drag would be proportional to 65 ** 3 (274,625 somethings). That means that energy loss at 65 mph due to drag is 1.65 times as much as at 55 mph. Double the speed, and air drag would figure very prominately. (1,331,000 somethings, or 8 times as much.)

Based on that, then I guess we should have speed limits that are derived from computing the most efficient RPM for a particular vehicle? Interesting concept. Not sure it would work, though. People don’t seem interested in following any posted speed limit regardless of the gearing of the vehicle they own.

I’m always amazed (and a bit amused) when a group of people that is so adamant about some laws (immigration) being strictly enforced seems to think that other laws (speed limits) don’t apply to them because they are inconvenient....
It is actually. Gains an extra 10 miles an hour. And on my commute that saves 10-15 minutes each way. So 30 extra minutes for relaxation or whatever versus sitting on the road behind some nanny who's afraid of the gas pedal. I'll take my 30 minutes thank you. If you don't like going that fast, stay out of the fast lane.
OK, then let’s look at it again.
Dallas to El Paso: 880mi.
Driving time at 85mph: 10.5 hours.
Time to fly (including 1 hour to drive to the airport, 3 hours to wait since you got to the airport early to clear security, 2 hours sitting on the runway waiting for clearance/whatever, 2+ hours flight time including waiting for a runway in El Paso, 1 hour sitting on the runway waiting for slow gate workers to clear a gate, another hour and a half to get your baggage and your rental car): 10.5 hours.
What was the point of flying again?
