Caps and gowns filled the floor of Coleman Coliseum twice here Saturday as the University of Alabama held its spring commencement. At 9 a.m., ceremonies were held for the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Human Environmental Sciences, School of Social Work and Graduate Interdisciplinary Studies, followed by ceremonies for the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, College of Communication and Information Sciences, College of Education, and Capstone College of Nursing at 1 p.m.
James T. Stephens, former president and current chairman of the board of EBSCO, addressed the graduates and challenged them to do better than previous generations. He then challenged them to question the nation's motives for going to war in Iraq.
"We ... are now engaged aggressively in addressing Iraq," he said. "We are asking whether our minds are being led by a good heart. We are asking whether this is good global citizenship. Most importantly, we are asking: Is this the behavior of a good and virtuous society?"
Stephens said he finds two elements of the war painful to the nation's character. "First, we stepped outside our national character when we started the war," he said. "The second pain is the combination of the loss of life and the large number of crippled young men and women of our armed forces, but the greater number is the 65,000 absolutely innocent children, women and men, all Iraqi civilians, who have died from the disturbances created.

In Saddam's 26 years in power, he caused the violent deaths of 2 million people between the wars with his neighbors, his genocide at home, and his terrorizing of dissidents. That averages out to more than 6,000 killed a month for 26 years. Where was Mr. Stephens of EBSCO then? Where was his "compassion" then? Where was his "sense of injustice" then????

Those Iraqis were killed by terrorists who have the same attitude as Cho; kill anyone with whom you don't agree, anyone who makes you mad.
This speaker seems to think that those Iraqis died only because Americans are there, but those terrorists were killing innocent people before we ever set foot in Iraq, and they'll continue long after we're gone.
You need to understand the Air Guard more. It depends on what type of aircraft the specific Guard Unit has. President Bush flew the F102 and it was not an required fighter/bomber plane for Viet Nam, but it was an “Air Defense Aircraft”. I guess that is why all F102 (and F106’s) were assigned to the U S Air Force Air Defense Command (ADC), my command for which is served for 8 of my 20 years active duty
I would like to see some proof that he was booed. Can you give us any links to a booing or have someone who was there add a reply here?
65,000 absolutely innocent Iraqis killed by the US? Exactly WHEN did this occur? The military is just popping peaceful civilians left and right? OK, I’ll bite, then I’d like to ask how many NON innocent Iraqis have been killed? You know those gentle, peace-loving waifs who just happen to be firing RPGs at our Marines, blowing up cars and buildings, cutting off heads of reporters, slaughtering Iraqis who simply want to govern themselves. If we’re just murdering 65,000 “innocents”, we must have killed millions of non-innocents by now.
There is no “proof”. As I said I heard it from someone who was there. I welcome any further confirmation or elaboration. But I can say that I am not surprised University of Alabama parents would boo this speech at a graduation ceremony. This is a conservative state.
