Wednesday night on ABC-TV, two televangelists took on nonbelievers from the Rational Response Squad in a bid to prove the existence of God (see "Nightline Face Off" on ABCNews.com).

The TV polemics come in the wake of a rash of bestselling books by atheists challenging religion.

What evidence is that? Enquiring atheists want to know. And don't tell me it's in the bible. That's just a collection of old folk tales passed down through the centuries.

I would suggest you endeavor yourself to take the time to seriously study the Bible, based on the simple fact that some of the most brilliant minds throughout history believe the entire Bible is a perfect introduction to the Savior, Jesus Christ.

From a strictly literary perspective, the scripture displays a supernatural origin that cannot be explained by natural means. For a document to have been written by 40 different authors spread out over more than 1500 years, to maintain an integrity that has withstood the most critical skeptics, speaks of it's authenticity.

No other Holy Book can withstand the rational Western civilizations finest minds for more than 10 minutes. Our Founding Fathers were thoroughly literate in the Biblical scriptures and based our unique ideas about freedom through personal responsibility as revealed in the Bible.

Without a transformed heart through the belief in the God of the Bible, a person has no motivation to serve those in their community, as revealed by the hearts of Liberals (The victumology of secular humanism) and radical religionists found in other beliefs.

So a person must be omniscient in order to be an atheist?

So a person must have knowledge about everything in the entire Universe, from the most microscopic to the most macroscopic level, in order to be an atheist?

A lack of knowledge about any area in the universe, no matter how small, disqualifies the athiest position?

Wow! Do you place such a burden on the theists as well?

I think the 'other possibilities outside the scope of the human mind.' is most likely at this point. Most of the human beings on this planet call that concept God. People will still search and learn, it's in our nature. According to some of the later ridiculous eleven dimensional spacial theories that I have read about, we could just be a bubble. They had to create the eleventh dimension because the initial supposition of ten dimensions didn't quite work out, they fudged it. It's called M theory. Pathetic. These would be atheist physicists.

The belief of atheism requires as much (if not more) proof as any religious belief.

"A lack of knowledge about any area in the universe, no matter how small, disqualifies the athiest position?"

Exactly..we don't know nearly enough and maybe never will. I hope not. I am a student of science. I believe it is used for good in most cases, we are simple lacking, posible still retarded.

But all the evidence that we’ve gathered as humans since the start of history points to the position that there is no God.

Even though atheism may fall short of a lock-tight deductive proof, so far as we are able to tell, with our telescopes and our microscopes and all the progress of technology, God is simply not here.

The theists position is just the opposite. Fantastical claims are made about the positive existence of a God entity, yet there isn’t any supporting evidence whatsoever.

What evidence has convinced you that there is no God? I’m curious.

In case anyone care, I’ll write you a summary of why I am an evangelical Christian (ex: not a private belief at all), and why I incur a “cost” for my belief.

Most of what we believe and based actions on is this: personal experience. When I opened my mind to “God” three years ago, that humbling of myself, He revealed Himself through personal experience. I’m talking about very low probability events and a “understanding” that He is with me. Point is: honestly approach God, and if you are fully humble, He’ll respond to it.

Second: the sum of all human knowledge points to a Creator and that the Bible is a credible document and that Christianity is an “impossible faith”. Check out the first two speakers here:

I am 1 week away from a BS in Genetics, so you can imagine what I have to do this week (finals, ugh)

Your friend,

Jonathan Highness

"...so far as we are able to tell, with our telescopes and our microscopes and all the progress of technology, God is simply not here."

There is more to life than simple measurements that we are too fearful to explore. It's still taboo in science to consider the alternative dimensions to what we can see with our eyes and touch with our hands. This is a limit that must be overcome for science to ever be taken seriously.

Frankly as a believer I don’t hold it against you if you look at much of what passes for Christendom in America today and shake your head. A very far cry from the brand of thoughtful, deep Christianity that swarmed the towns and hamlets of New England some 300 years back...

The same evidence that convinced me there is no Santa Claus. Namely the complete lack of evidence supporting his existence. You know perfectly well that it is impossible to prove a negative.

Do you believe in Allah? Why not? And what is the difference between believing in Allah or Christ?

I was raised in the highly bureaucratic, intellectually divided, liturgically ossified (whether pre or post Vatican II) Roman Catholic Church. The hand clapping, smoke and mirrors faith preached by the mega churches doen't exacly turn me or "reach me" either.

Skepticism runs on my mother's side of the family, my grandfather being a classic example (although I do NOT share his politics, except on self-defense). I meet religious folks and it is like they are from a different planet. I don't mean that as an INSULT BTW, just saying that I just can't "identify" with them.

BTW: What happenned to the Congregationalists? Its like they went into a tailspin after the Civil War.

“two televangelists...” hardly a fair represenation of the majority of Christian congregations.

The fact that you exist nullifies your points. We weren’t talking about Santa until you had to vent. You are self created I guess, right?

As a believer I must confess I come close to hating televangelists.

Please don't bring up 'santa', 'the easter bunny', 'Pegasus', or any other mythos in response, thanx.

Questioning your origins is healthy. You deride it. Did it have to do with an errant leprechaun?
