An “informant” can get you eliminated. By giving the police false information. The police then do a “no knock” raid, actually a “break the door down and shoot anything that moves, including the dog and the cat” raid.

Probably, since this occurred in Rudy’s police state of NYC, they would be arrested since handguns are (for all practical purposes) outlawed in NYC, and long arms need to be stored locked and unloaded.

Or the armored cops with automatic weapons would have slaughtered these innocent people for trying to defend themselves. It's happened, many times. The cops almost always get away with it: criminal charges not brought, civil suits dismissed.

Factors differ, granted.

Washington and NYC are both bastions of gun control. Crime for the latter did not go down until more policemen were implemented, along with tougher measures.

As a whole, crime is lower in states with less-restrictive gun regulations. You can even see this overseas, where gun control-happy England has higher crime rates than the US, whereas Switzerland - which practically has a gun in every home - has nearly nonexistent rates.

The basic issue is this: considering the historical evidence to the contrary, why should gun control be pursued? Why should our RKBA be infringed?

With a murder/violent crime rate that is a fraction of the rate in gun-slinging, Red State Utopias like Jacksonville, Charlotte, Mobile, DFW, Houston, Phoenix, Denver, Tulsa, Orlando, Memphis, Atlanta, and Birmingham, the vast, overwhelming majority of law abiding people in New York City don’t need to worry about body bags.

Agreed. Our constitutional protections are under assault by the modern day “revenuers,” like the feds who used to raid the whiskey stills down south. Except now, they get to seize the stills and all property related to the crime. The asset forfeiture is the incentive.

I lived in a neighborhood in Miami Dade County where the worst thing that could happen is that your neighbors lab would poop on your lawn. Yet I and many of my neighbors were gun owners and we didn't go around shooting areas.

Most of the crime in Miami happens in a few ghetto areas. The ethnicity and level of education is more of a factor in violent crime than the level of gun ownership.

Agreed. We have serious security problems in this country, and the paramilitary cops are running around busting into homes in the middle of the night to find some drugs.

Oftentimes, innocents are gunned down. Sometimes the cops shoot each other. Sometimes evidence gets planted, warrants are illegally obtained.

Someone already posted the Cato map earlier — really a must read, IMO. But that shows only what Cato has been able to document. I’ll bet its the tip of the iceberg. Asset forfeiture is a mighty powerful incentive.
