Responding to Russias bullying of Estonia (see EDM, April 27, May 1, 3) the U.S. White House has invited Estonian President Toomas Ilves to meet with U.S. President George W. Bush on June 25 in Washington. The invitation itself, and the announcements timing in May, is the strongest demonstration of support for Estonia against Russias escalating threats since April 26. Estonias presidential office as well as the ambassador to the United States, Juri Luik, remarked that the invitation validates Estonias policy choices: democracy and freedom as Western values at home, participation in NATO-led peacekeeping missions, and assistance to countries in the European Unions eastern neighborhood.
Bush and Ilves last met in late November 2006 in Tallinn, two months after Ilves election as president. The scheduling of another presidential meeting only six months after the first, particularly with a small country, is a highly unusual move by the White House, signaling U.S. backing for Estonia all the more clearly in the present crisis.
Speaking at the May 5 commemoration of a U.S. diplomat killed by the Soviet military while over flying Estonia in 1940, U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns noted that free Estonias sovereignty is once again under attack. The entire U.S. government regards Estonia as a friend and ally and respects Estonias right to make its decisions independently in a free country, Burns noted. These unprecedently strong statements seem designed to discourage Russian escalation and adventurism in Estonia.
On May 2 the U.S. Senate passed a resolution condemning the riots in Estonia and attacks on Estonian embassies and supporting Estonias right to deal with internal matters, such as the relocation of the Red Army monument from Tallinn.

Good move by W to stick a finger in Putin’s eye for his bullying of Estonia. I had the good fortune to visit Tallin once — it is a beautiful city and well worth seeing if you find yourself in that part of the world.

Estonia is a nazi state. They treat Russians there as the second class citizens.
On May 2 the U.S. Senate passed a resolution condemning the riots in Estonia and attacks on Estonian embassies and supporting Estonias right to deal with internal matters, such as the relocation of the Red Army monument from Tallinn.==
The relocation of the monument was just the “last straw”. Estonia did many other dirties to Russia. So Russia has any motive to cut business with Estonia.
Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Artis Pabriks and Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis (in that order) issued solidarity statements equating Estonias right to take sovereign decisions with Latvias own right to do so. The Latvian parliaments draft declaration of support is being delayed (though it can not be blocked) by a mainly Russian opposition party through procedural maneuvers. Polish President Lech Kaczynski made several supportive telephone calls to Ilves during the crisis while also trying to impress on an indifferent EU that Estonia must not be left to stand alone. ==
Poland and Latvia? Who could be surprised?:) The trades with Poland is about 3 bln of dollars? Then next year it will be 0. Latvia lost the supply of oil already then will lose the supply of NG:).
Hey, it’s my country you’re talking about!
If some Russians in Estonia are treated as second class citizens, it’s because they refuse to speak/learn Estonian. All we ask is that they showed some respect to the natives by learning the language.
Hey, its my country youre talking about!
If some Russians in Estonia are treated as second class citizens, its because they refuse to speak/learn Estonian. ==
You sound too mild:). I heared that the truth is little more stiff. Can you tell as about the estonian “language inspection” for example?
Secondly WHY you build the monuments to soldiers of german SS? Don’t you know that they all are the war criminals by Nurnberg Tribunal?
what did they do ?
A nation of 1.3 million can’t afford ignorant immigrants. Due to the massive russification that took place in Estonia during the Soviet occupation, Estonians are on survival-mode.
SS-monuments... there was one, erected by a mayor of a small town. The government removed it 2 weeks later.

“Soviet occupation”, interesting? Pleas tell me is it the times when yopur today prime minister Ancip was the instructor of Tartu town communist party commitee? It is the rule however. that the most modern staunch nationalist of any “small but proud” nation is the former communist:))).
Hence the question: if your new nationalist prime minister Ancip was the communist party functioneer during soviet times then MAYBE you “occupied” yourself during soviet times? But now in attempt to accquit yoourself you acuse Russians?
SS-monuments... there was one, erected by a mayor of a small town. The government removed it 2 weeks later.==
OK maybe. BUT how about then marches of SS veterans which happen each year? DO you know that 36 SS police battalion formed in Estonia killed many innocent civilian in Belorus? Di dEstonia appologise to Belorus?
It is also my country you are bashing here RusIvan.
“DO you know that 36 SS police battalion formed in Estonia killed many innocent civilian in Belorus?”
Care to back it up with some facts?
>>Estonia is a nazi state. They treat Russians there as the second class citizens.<<
They aren’t allowed to enter Estonian only restaurants? have separated toilets or buses?
No?
So how are they treated as second class citizens?
If they don’t want to learn Estonian and can’t find job cause they know only Russian it’s their fault only
>>The relocation of the monument was just the last straw. Estonia did many other dirties to Russia. So Russia has any motive to cut business with Estonia.<<
Being independent and joining EU were the worst one I guess.
>>Poland and Latvia? Who could be surprised?:) The trades with Poland is about 3 bln of dollars? Then next year it will be 0. Latvia lost the supply of oil already then will lose the supply of NG:).<<
Putin bullying and drunken Russian thugs wrecking havoc? Who could be surprised.
The trades will fall because RusIvan says so? I don’t think so... they are falling constantly because Polish buisnessmen prefer capitalistic countries with free market rather then unstable - oil dependant... something pretending to be free market.
I don’t think that Latvians care much about Russian oil, they found new source, near the Latvian-Lithuanian border.
It is easy. Estonian SSmen did the blood trail very wide and well-known.
.." http://www.sem40.ru/anti/holokost/14578/

The answer: In August, 1942 have shipped all 36-th police battalion in city Tartu on a train and have left for Belarus where us have unloaded in the city of Novogrudok. Not because I say so. I just claim the fact. Simply, none in Russia wants to buy the products from country which does dirty trick on yours. How can I possibly do business with people which openly talk that they are NOT my friends and they constantly do dirties to me? Impossible isn’t it?
As long as Russians won’t understand that in business money counts, not sentiments there is no chance for releving the market held in steel grip of socialism.
You don’t have to like someone to make business, look at Polish-German relations, now they are better but there was a time when both governments just hated each other, there was a political war. That did not reflect business that was going on between both sides.
Making money thanks to other country is just another way of making a war!!! Just with peacefull methods, it’s also the best way to avoid war, since noone would attack any country if this would hit his country’s economy seriously.
“BUT how about then marches of SS veterans which happen each year?”
So? Soviet veterans march as well. It’s a free country.
_Soviet occupation, interesting? Pleas tell me is it the times when yopur today prime minister Ancip was the instructor of Tartu town communist party commitee? It is the rule however. that the most modern staunch nationalist of any small but proud nation is the former communist:)))._
You are right about Ansip, he was a member of the Communist Party, but I think he has redeemed himself by moving that ugly statue to the outskirts.
As long as Russians wont understand that in business money counts, not sentiments there is no chance for releving the market held in steel grip of socialism.==
I amazed to hear it from Pole. I knew before much about famous “polish honor”. Now you tell me this:)
You should know that Russians cann’t smile in face and hate behind backs. If we do not like someone then we cann’t not only do business with him even figurally speaking to “sit sh*t on the second toilet seat”:)).
So we absolutely cann’t do that. The “honor” cann’t be sold or bought for money. That is the cardinal difference between us and the “civilized” Europians:).
