SEGOLENE ROYAL CONCEDES DEFEAT TO NICOLAS SARKOZY IN FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

“Ultra-right, antisemetic?
You obviously are either being fed propaganda or just don’t know better.
Szarkozy is the moderate pro-business, pro-freedom candidate of Hungarian Jewish extraction.
Here he would be considered a liberal Republican. To the communists and leftists ilk, he is exactly as you cited.

Congratulations to our French Freeper Friends- assuming we havent chased them all out of here with taunts and insults already. You did not, Riley, but let us just say other members did their best to achieve just that result.
I'm sorry for some of the insults I may have made in the past and I certainly hope that the other FReepers you were talking about will stop being so hostile with the French. I generally try to confront them on any threads that I see them in and hope others will do the same. As far as I'm concerned, it is like a cancer in Free Republic.

I think that it is wrong to characterize Sarkozy as right wing...
By French standards, anything less than a full-blown socialist is rightwing.
Hes going to need a lot of support, luck and prayer to reverse the damage that the last two decades have done to France. Im not real optimistic he can do the trick, especially with the EU restrictions that France doesnt have full say in changing.
But if we or Israel have to go into Iran, France is now far less likely to lead Germany in opposing us at the U.N. or in regional diplomacy. We may no longer have Britain on the ground with us but to have friendly governments in London, Paris, and Berlin just has to be a plus. I do think it is no coincidence at all that the Queen chose this time to favor us with a state visit. Blair may be done but Britain may yet hang tough with us.
I'm not glad to trade Blair for his successor plus Sarkozy/Merkel. But the new Franco-German leaders are certainly better than the old ones, triangulating against us diplomatically and with our enemies. Bad enough that Pootie and China are largely united against us.
Clearly, a Sarkozy is better for us than a Royal.
You know, this Frenchman could surprise us. Especially if the socialist/Muzzie rabble make a major error by rioting and getting completely out of control. That will be his ticket to go as far as he wishes. He may also do something to rebuild their military, provided he can scare up the money. And some of his remarks as interior minister indicate he is, well, kind of radical by French standards. But still no Le Pen by any means. But there is some strength and guts in that Frenchman, I think. He's been willing to take action before, knowing he'll take it on the chin. He can take a few punches and come back swinging.
At any rate, bon chance, France, with M. Sarkozy.

That’s what I’m hearing from other Freepers too. For one thing I believe I was getting him confused with Le Pen

Dominique de VILLEPIN is still the Prime Minister of France...
But will that viper still be prime minister next week?
You know he must be corrupt, just like Chirac. I'd bet Sarkozy can rid himself of him, send him back to the French Parliament. Personally, I'd like to that particular oily frog in prison. Even more than the corrupt Chirac.
He already has bested de Villepin politically. A year ago, we were expecting that he might defeat Sarkozy for the party's nomination for the presidency.

Doesnt this pic (in #264) remind you of the infamous one from after the 04 election? I cant find it, but its the one with the woman standing and crying while holding a sign, with a guy who looks like hes in an orange jumpsuit sitting behind her. :) Actually, it reminded me of a picture of French soccer fans after being swept 0-3 from the first round of World Cup 2002. That was after being the world champs in 1998!

I beg to differ. Szark represents the best of what’s right in both France and the US.
He’s clearly signalled he wants to be alligned with the US in the battle against the Left and the Terrorists, who are sometimes alligned against us.

During Sarkozys victory speech, it was nice to hear the crowd cheer when he mentioned the USA.
It is time for our feud with France to end. Not that there won't be another one sooner or later.
We need to adopt the attitude of Britain toward France. France is never always your friend, nor are they always your rival/enemy. They're rather mercurial. It's their nature.
We should also recognize the contributions French intelligence has made to the War On Terror. And their recent deployment of their only carrier is, well, at least helpful. I won't comment on the ship's technical merits. I assume our technicians can help improve its performance but without us making any show of it. Letting bygones be bygones is a Good Thing now.
