Fred Thompson: 'Enjoy a good laugh'
Chicago Tribune online ^ | 2 MAY 2007 | Mark Silva

Posted on 05/02/2007 6:05:32 AM PDT by radar101

Fred Thompson, the former Republican senator from Tennessee who plays a prosecutor on television’s Law and Order and is watching his own popularity grow from his seat on the sidelines of a presidential campaign that he hasn’t even joined yet, is making it clear what he makes of Democrats in the great Iraq war debate.

“As far as the Democrats, they are adhering to the extent they can to the most left wing element of their base,’’ Thompson said in an interview shown on the Fox News Channel’s Hannity and Colmes last night. “You know, Moveon.org and those folks are running the Democratic party.

“And they're taking extremist positions and doing extremist things,’’ Thompson said. “(Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid is doing things that I think the American people are going to reject. They're as near to investing in defeat of their own country than anything I've ever seen, and I don't think the American people will forgive them for that. So, they're going through that exercise, and let's just let them go, let's just give them a little rope and see what they do.’’

And he had this to say about the Republican Party’s own labeling of the “defeatist’’ Democrats in Congress: “Our name-calling and harping on them right now is kind of wasted effort as far as I'm concerned.”

Thompson says he will take his time in deciding whether to seek the Republican nomination for president, with polls showing that his name-recognition could provide him with an instant entrée to the race.

He must wait till his last episode is aired. When the season is over he will go in attack mode.

Concur. He's waiting till after "Sweeps Week."

On top of that, I'm disgusted that this campaign is already in full-throttle just a couple of months after mid-terms, and that we've had a major debate a FULL YEAR befor it should have taken place.

There are some contractual issues he has to work out carefully. I think he is in. I predict he will jump in by mid June.

The Iowa Caucus is on January 14th, 2008. That is 8 1/2 months away. It does seem like debates for the primary should still be months off, and I think the primaries are too early as well.

On the other hand, debates are a good way for candidates that don't have a lot of funding to get their message out to the public, so early debates can help a struggling candidate. However, if candidates do poorly in early debates, and don't have strong financial backing, it can easily end their candidacy quickly.

He’s running - he used the exact words “this campaign” at least twice during the interview, referring to himself. He needs to wait until the run of “Law and Order” ends sometime this month, so as not to stir up those pesky equal-time rules.

yes--that's why i agree that he's in... if he were not going to run, he would have said so along time ago... i cannot see him raising everybody's hopes and then letting them down... i think the rules work to his advantage... that he has not declared is not hurting him at all... yeah!

Fred’s already putting in long days (14 hours I read) with filming, radio gig etc. Not bad, not bad at all.

not to mention all of his guest appearances... it seems he's invited everywhere!

Oh, he also said his health was more important than any campaign. That is not what voters want to hear. Especially not in wartime. They want to hear that the candidate believes with all his heart he is the best man in the country for the job - the only one that can really do it well, and that he will sacrifice himself to get it and do it as best he can. It could also be spun to imply his health is not good. That was a very bad slip and if he is prone to those he will get chewed up over them.

I think you misinterpreted his meaning. If he runs, or more accurately - announces - it will mean that his health, in his mind and his doctor's, is NOT an issue. And I guess you also missed the part about something happening out there, something special, and that he thinks he can answer it.

From what I've read he puts in 14 hour work days, I'd hate to look in the mirror after doing that for awhile. ;-D

He is a George Washington II in the fact, that George Washington didn’t want to be President, but took the job and task for the state of the Union and duty of country.

If Thompson gets in, it will change the whole dynamics of 2008 and Democrats know it - and they fear it.

Agreed. The Rats know that McCain, Giuliani, and Romney are like Kerry was for them a few years ago, most of us are going to vote for the nominee, but not enthusiastically, and that's what a party needs to win an election, a candidate whose supporters can bring others to the polls.

For me, at this point, Fred would do it.
