:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
U.S. Seeks Closing of Visa Loophole for Britons
-Full Story-

Omar Khyam, the ringleader of the thwarted London bomb plot who was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday, showed the potential for disaffected young men to be lured as terrorists, a threat that British officials said they would have to contend with for a generation.

But the 25-year-old Mr. Khyam, a Briton of Pakistani descent, also personifies a larger and more immediate concern: as a British citizen, he could have entered the United States without a visa, like many of an estimated 800,000 other Britons of Pakistani origin.

American officials, citing the number of terror plots in Britain involving Britons with ties to Pakistan, expressed concern over the visa loophole. In recent months, the homeland security secretary, Michael Chertoff, has opened talks with the government here on how to curb the access of British citizens of Pakistani origin to the United States.

OPINION: I’m not surprised. I was only amzaed that the lame-stream media went gaga that Jihad Mickey would be pulled off the air. Remember, jihad is evil and it slogs on in the slime day after day.

Prosecutors say jihadists planned to set off bomb in Copenhagen because of Muhammad cartoons

Cartoon Rage still smolders. “Cartoons possible terror motive,” from the Copenhagen Post, with thanks to Fjordman:

Retribution for a Danish newspaper’s publication of the now-infamous Mohammed cartoons was one of the motives behind four men’s alleged plans to detonate a bomb in Copenhagen, according to the assistant crown prosecutor in the Vollsmose terror trial.
Charlotte Alsing Juul accused three of the men of using the cartoons and Denmark’s participation in the Iraq war as justification for planning to bomb ‘a place where political decisions are made’, such as parliament’s address at Christiansborg Palace.

The Eastern High Court in Copenhagen subsequently extended custody for the three men as Juul argued that two of them were the leaders of a terror cell based in an Odense mosque. Prosecutors said they have evidence obtained from a mole working for domestic intelligence agency PET, which included bomb-making substances found in the suspect’s flats and corresponding bomb making instructions downloaded from the internet.

“ALGERIA: HEAD OF AL-QAEDA LINKED GROUP THREATENS TOURISTS IN MAGHREB”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Algiers, 10 May (AKI) - Western workers in North Africa and tourists are going to be the prime targets of suicide attacks, Abu Musab Abdel Wudud, the leader of the Al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb said in a video released on Islamist websites Thursday - the first by the Algerian terrorist since the new group was formed in January from the Salafite Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). “We ask Muslims to avoid sites where there are foreigners, diplomats, businessmen or tourists,” he says in the 19-minute-long video.

Announcing the intensification of suicide bomb attacks, Abdel Wudud outlines his group’s strategy to strike in particular touristic venues in North Africa.

“Starting from now we have decided to increase suicide operations as a strategic choice in the fight between us and our enemy and we have therefore ordered all the leaders of our brigades to start recruiting martyrs,” he also says.”

Release A070510c

4 TERRORISTS KILLED, 5 WEAPONS CACHES FOUND

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces killed four terrorists, detained 13 suspected terrorists and uncovered five caches of weapons and improvised explosive device-making materials during an operation May 4-7 in Anbar Province.

Coalition Forces identified four terrorists emplacing IEDs on the opposite side of the Euphrates River May 5 and called in an air strike. The four terrorists were killed.

On May 6, Coalition Forces patrolling along the Euphrates River found seven barrels of highly concentrated chemicals used in the production of highly unstable and dangerous homemade IEDs. The chemicals were safely destroyed on site.

Also during the four-day operation, Coalition Forces uncovered approximately four IEDs on various roadways. Coalition Forces destroyed the IEDs and eliminated the threat the civilian population and Coalition Forces.

Thirteen suspected terrorists were detained over the four days for possession of IED materials, IED emplacement, confessions to killing local civilians and possession of illegal weapons.

Coalition Forces found five caches of weapons, including two heavy machine gun mounts stored in a vehicle, which they destroyed. Also in the caches, Coalition Forces found 450 hand grenades, 28 rockets, two anti-armor weapons, mortar fuses, ammunition and an explosives mixing laboratory. Each cache was destroyed on site.

“Over the four-day operation Coalition forces successfully pushed al-Qaeda in Iraq away from the homes and families of these Iraqis, allowing them to return to a safe and normal life,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20070510-08
May 10, 2007

Tips lead to twin car bomb discoveries
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD– Acting on tips provided by civilians, Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-
National Division – Baghdad Soldiers discovered two vehicle-borne explosive
devices May 9, in the Rashid District.

Members of the Fort Riley, Kan.-based Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th
Infantry Regiment “Black Lions,” and the 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division
found the vehicles while investigating information given to them and their Iraqi
National Police counterparts by Iraqi citizens.

The Black Lions were enroute to investigate a red Mazda when the vehicle
exploded in the Bayaa area. An Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal team
conducted post-assessment until relieved by MND-B troops.

One 120mm and one 105mm artillery round, two propane tanks, eight
artillery fuses, two 2-liter bottles of homemade explosives, a cellular telephone
and three batteries were discovered in the wreckage.

In another discovery, Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry
Regiment “Tomahawks” halted a red vehicle while investigating a tip from a local
Iraqi about a suspicious car matching the description. After Iraqi and MND-B
forces cordoned off the area to protect bystanders, an EOD team blew up the
vehicle after confirming it was a car bomb.

The EOD team also recovered one 120mm, one 107mm, six 57mm
unexploded projectiles and four 2-liter bottles of homemade explosives with
detonation cords attached from the scene.

“When citizens provide important tips like these, it sends a powerful
message to those criminals responsible,” said Col. Ricky D. Gibbs, 4th Infantry
Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division commander. “The message is that
the Iraqi people are not going to tolerate the violence these extremists bring to
Rashid’s neighborhoods and residential areas. We’re grateful for their assistance
in preventing any further bloodshed from occurring today.”

There were no injuries to civilians or military personnel in either incident.

Air Strike Kills Terrorists; Bomb-Making Material Seized in Raids

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2007 – A coalition air strike killed three terrorists today in the Sadr City section of Baghdad, and coalition troops in western Iraq killed a terrorist and seized material that could be used to construct chemical bombs.

The terrorists killed in the Sadr City air strike were suspected of belonging to a network that assists in the transport of weapons and high-yield explosives from Iran into Iraq, officials said. Intelligence reports also indicate the secret cell has ties to a kidnapping network that conducts attacks within Iraq.

In a separate operation today, coalition forces detained two individuals for suspected ties to smuggling activities supporting al Qaeda in Iraq.

“Coalition forces strike at the terrorists where they hide, not waiting for them to inflict violence on the Iraqi people,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “The Iraqi people continue to reject the methods of the terrorists and choose instead a stable, peaceful Iraq.”

During coalition-conducted raids in Anbar province early today, troops targeted a chemical bomb network and suspected smuggling operations, officials said. One terrorist was killed, and two suspected terrorists were detained during operations north of Karmah that targeted a car-bomb network that uses chlorine in its attacks.

“As long as the al Qaeda network plans and executes deadly attacks against Iraqis and those trying to protect them, we will seek them out and disrupt their activities,” Garver said.

In other news, Iraqi soldiers from 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 6th Army Division, foiled an insurgent attack yesterday on the al Numan hospital in Baghdad’s Adhamiyah district, officials said.

The joint security station in Adhamiyah was tipped off to the attack and notified Iraqi soldiers near the hospital, who responded to the threat. One insurgent was killed and another wounded during the engagement, while the Iraqi troops suffered three wounded. An AK-47, three magazines, a hand grenade, and a 60 mm mortar round rigged to explode with a hand-grenade fuse were found behind the hospital. The insurgents were attempting to emplace at least one bomb in the hospital, officials believe. Meanwhile, U.S. troops discovered two car bombs in Baghdad’s Rashid district during a search operation yesterday.

Members of the Fort Riley, Kan.-based Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment “Black Lions,” and the 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, found the vehicles while investigating information that Iraqi citizens gave to them and their Iraqi national police counterparts.

The same day soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment “Tomahawks” halted a vehicle while investigating a tip about a suspicious car. An explosive ordnance disposal team blew up the vehicle after confirming it was a car bomb.

“When citizens provide important tips like these, it sends a powerful message to those criminals responsible,” said Army Col. Ricky D. Gibbs, the 1st Infantry Division’s 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team commander. “The message is that the Iraqi people are not going to tolerate the violence these extremists bring to Rashid’s neighborhoods and residential areas. We’re grateful for their assistance in preventing any further bloodshed from occurring today.”

Elsewhere, U.S. paratroopers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, detained three suspected insurgents southwest of Mahmudiyah on May 8, according to officials.

The soldiers were searching for a weapons cache when they spotted about 20 men carrying automatic weapons. The men fled as the paratroopers approached. The paratroopers stopped three men who tried to escape in a black sedan. A search of the vehicle yielded an AK-47 rifle, a 9 mm submachine gun, and an ammunition vest. The paratroopers detained the suspects for further questioning.

In other Iraq news, U.S. forces found a weapons cache southwest of the Baghdad airport complex on May 7.

Soldiers assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), from Fort Drum, N.Y., discovered the cache near Radwaniyah while conducting a search-and-attack mission in the area.

The cache yielded 17 60 mm mortar rounds, seven 82 mm mortar rounds, five 105 mm artillery rounds, four 120 mm artillery rounds, five 122 mm artillery rounds, and 27 mortar fuses. The rounds were configured for both indirect fire and for use as improvised explosive devices.

The owner of the property where the cache was located was detained for questioning. An explosive ordnance team destroyed the ordnance.

Iran blocked UN inspectors on test visit to nuclear site
Agence France-Presse (excerpt) ^ | May 10, 2007

Posted on 05/10/2007 12:55:43 PM PDT by HAL9000

Excerpt -

VIENNA (AFP) - Iran blocked UN atomic experts on a first unannounced test inspection of an underground nuclear site where it enriches uranium, despite a pledge to allow such visits, diplomats told AFP Thursday.

The watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency had in March told Iran to allow its inspectors to install surveillance cameras at the site in Natanz but Tehran refused this and in return promised to allow frequent, unannounced visits.

A first test on April 21 of this agreement “was a total failure,” said a diplomat in Vienna, home to the IAEA, who added that a successful unannounced inspection has not yet taken place.

“The Iranians did not let the IAEA inspectors into the halls where the cascades of centrifuges are,” the diplomat said, referring to the production lines of centrifuges which enrich uranium.

“Powerful Car Bomb Defused”
The Moscow Times

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Law enforcement officials found and defused a powerful car bomb in southwestern Moscow on Wednesday, preventing what could have been a deadly attack.

The bomb, which contained 20 kilograms of plastic explosives and an unknown amount of ball bearings, was hidden inside a green Lada sedan parked on Ulitsa Profsoyuznaya, Interfax reported, citing a city law enforcement official.

The explosives were hidden in the back seat, while the steel balls were packed inside the trunk, the source said. Ball bearings are used to drastically increase the deadly force of an explosion.

Interfax said the bomb could have been activated in minutes.

NTV television reported Wednesday that police had also found a Kalashnikov assault rifle in the car.”
