Brooklyn man who violated U.S. Arms Export Control Act is sentenced
NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Leib Kohn, age 68, of Brooklyn, New York, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to 30 days of imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release. On December 15, 2004, Kohn and his now-defunct companies, L & M Manufacturing and NESCO NY Inc., pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Arms Export Control Act by sending military components out of the United States without the required authorization from the U.S. Government. Kohn and his companies have also paid a fine in the amount of $25,000.
According to documents filed with the Court and to statements made in court, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Kohn on March 19, 2004. At that time, a search warrant was executed at Kohn’s Brooklyn residence. Two days earlier, the Israeli authorities, working in conjunction with U.S. authorities, conducted a search at the business premises of Q.P.S in Binyamina, Israel and there located certain of the items that Kohn had purchased from U.S. manufacturers and shipped to Israel.
On April 15, 2004, a federal grand jury sitting in Bridgeport returned a two-count Indictment against Kohn, L & M Manufacturing and NESCO NY Inc. The indictment alleges that since May 2003, Kohn has continuously procured various munitions items from U.S. manufacturers, including one based in Connecticut, and shipped them to Israel without seeking permission of the U.S. Government for the export. These items are controlled by the U.S. State Department and require licenses and approvals from the U.S. State Department prior to export.
According to the indictment, some of the items Kohn procured and exported are: Parts designed for use in military radar, parts for the F-4 Phantom jet fighter aircraft, and parts for the Hawk guidance missile systems. In particular, the Indictment alleges that Kohn procured wiring harnesses for guidance radar of the Hawk Missile System from a Connecticut company, a fire control radar system for the F-4 Phantom fighter jet aircraft, an audio frequency amplifier for the F-5 jet fighter aircraft from RDB Aeromax in Chatsworth, California, and engine parts for the F-4 Phantom jet fighter aircraft from Unique Aeronautics of Sun Valley, California. In each instance, Kohn was advised through documentation that export of these items was prohibited absent a valid export license from the U.S. Department of State.
U.S. Attorney O’Connor noted that the investigation is ongoing. Special Agents of U.S. Department Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted this investigation, in cooperation with the Israeli National Police.
Assistant United States Attorney Mark D. Rubino is prosecuting the case.

Orange County man sentenced for illegally exporting U.S. military aircraft parts to Iran
SANTA ANA, Calif. - An Iranian-born United States citizen was sentenced here yesterday in U.S. District Court to two years in prison and six months of home confinement for illegally exporting U.S. military aircraft parts to Iran via associates in Germany and the United Arab Emirates.
Reza Tabib, 52, of Irvine, pleaded guilty in June 2006 to violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which prohibits the export and re-export to Iran of certain items of U.S. origin. The prosecution is the result of a joint investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS).
“One of ICE’s top enforcement priorities is preventing terrorist groups and hostile nations from illegally obtaining U.S. military products and sensitive technology,” said William Hayes, assistant special agent in charge for the ICE Office of Investigations in Orange County. “These items are controlled for good reason — in the wrong hands, they could be used to inflict harm upon America or its allies.”
In January 2006, agents intercepted and seized maintenance kits specifically designed for the F-14 “Tomcat” aircraft that Tabib, along with his wife, Terri Repic-Tabib, had sent to Iran via Germany. Agents arrested the couple at their Irvine residence in February 2006. A search of the Tabibs’ home led to the seizure of 13,000 more aircraft parts worth an estimated $540,000. Those seized parts included military-grade hardware for different aircraft, including the F-14. The search also turned up numerous aircraft parts lists that were provided to the couple by an Iranian military officer. In addition, agents located two suitcases and two briefcases filled with aircraft parts believed to be destined for Iran. The investigation revealed that prior to his arrest, Tabib had purchased tickets to travel to Iran.
“Yesterday’s sentencing brings to conclusion an investigation that identified and stopped a significant illegal conspiracy to provide U.S. military technology directly to the Iranian military,” said Rick Gwin, special agent in charge for the DCIS Western Field Office. “This investigation signifies the aggressive pursuit by the DCIS, in cooperation with our other federal law enforcement partners, to identify and prosecute those who illegally export or steal our sensitive military technology.”
Terri Repic-Tabib pleaded guilty to providing a false statement on a shippers’ export declaration form and was sentenced to two years probation on March 26, 2006. Agents determined that Repic-Tabib intentionally avoided reporting requirements on the shipment of the F-14 “Tomcat” aircraft parts to Germany, which were ultimately destined for Iran.

Human smuggling organization leader sentenced to 10 years in prison
Twenty people sentenced to date as part of this conspiracy
CLEVELAND - The developer and leader of one of the largest and most lucrative human smuggling organizations on the Southern border was sentenced here today to 10 years in prison. Today’s sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Gregory A. White, Northern District of Ohio; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Special Agent in Charge Brian M. Moskowitz; and U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Inspector in Charge, Pittsburgh Division, Robin M. Dalgleish.
U.S. District Court Judge Solomon Oliver sentenced Manuel Valdez-Gomez, 54, to 120 months in prison. Part of Valdez-Gomez’ sentence includes forfeiting properties located in the Phoenix, Ariz. area, proceeds from un-cashed money orders, a hotel and restaurant located in Nogales, Mexico, and a number of firearms and ammunition. The value of the forfeited cash and properties totals about $3 million.
ICE agents revealed that Valdez-Gomez operated an alien smuggling organization, initially assisted by relatives. Later he expanded the operation to include non-relatives who assisted him with fee arrangements to smuggle aliens into the United States. The co-conspirators used safe houses under their control and operated by Jesus Sosa-Ortiz, Jaime Hernandez-Ornelas, J. Santana Hernandez-Gomez and others, to temporarily situate aliens who had been escorted across the border from Mexico to Nogales, Ariz. Valdez-Gomez arranged to smuggle aliens into the United States and used drivers to transport aliens from the border area to Phoenix, Ariz., and then to ultimate destinations in Ohio, California, Florida, Nevada, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and other interior states. Drivers transported as many as 14 aliens on each trip into the interior of the United States where the aliens were met by family members or friends who then paid the smuggling fee to the drivers.
The alien smuggling operation also provided the smuggled illegal aliens with fraudulent alien registration cards, social security cards, and other identification documents, for an additional fee above the fee they were paying to be smuggled into the United States. The U.S. mail was often used to transfer fraudulent documents, information necessary to preparing those fraudulent documents, and payments. The drivers of the loads of illegal aliens used Express Mail to transfer large amounts of cash and money orders to the co-conspirators in Phoenix, Ariz., thereby lessening the risk, if apprehended, of being identified as an alien smuggler and alien transporter.
The investigation concluded that drivers and operators of safe houses located in northern states avoided detection and facilitated sending the proceeds of the illegal alien smuggling activities in a structured way to avoid the reporting requirements related to cash transactions greater than $10,000 and $3,000.
“ICE will not allow alien smuggling organizations to use Northern Ohio as a destination for their human cargo,” said Brian M. Moskowitz, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations for Ohio and Michigan. “Human smugglers pose a very real threat to our nation’s border security. Today’s sentencing should remind these smugglers and would-be smugglers that ICE special agents in Cleveland and around the country stand ready to bring them to justice.”
To date, 20 co-defendants have been sentenced. Most recently sentenced were four members of Valdez-Gomez’ immediate family on April 24 as follows:
Ismael Valdez, 36, son, a driver for the criminal organization, 60 months incarceration.
Yolanda Sosa, 28, daughter, a money launderer for the criminal organization, 46 months incarceration.
Aurora Valdez, 50, wife, also was sentenced to six months of home detention for her role in the criminal organization.
Jesus Sosa-Ortiz, 29, son-in-law of Manuel Valdez-Gomez and his right-hand assistant until his apprehension two years ago on charges of illegal reentry following deportation, was sentenced to 96 months incarceration.
Three additional co-defendants have pleaded guilty to one or more federal charges and await sentencing next month; and one charged co-defendant, Ricardo Aranda-Moreno remains a fugitive.
ICE initiated the joint investigation with the U.S. Postal Investigation Service. ICE Offices of Investigation in the following cities took part in the investigation: Cleveland, Ohio; Phoenix, Ariz.; Detroit, Mich., and Grand Rapids, Mich. In addition, state and local authorities in Ohio assisted with this investigation, including: the Painesville Police Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lake County Narcotics Agency, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and East Lake Police Department.
U.S. Attorneys Offices in Phoenix, Ariz., and Grand Rapids, Mich., also provided assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Phillip J. Trippi, Gary D. Arbeznik and James L. Morford prosecuted this case.

This “supposedly” Saddam Intelligence Service document was published today on an Iraqi news site called Buratha news http://www.burathanews.com/news_article_20033.html and it talks about a scheduled meeting between Saddam Intelligence Service and Al Qaeda number 2 Aymen Al Zawahiri on December 14 2002 and per the request of Saddam Presidential Secretary to discuss an operation called Revenge inside Saudi Arabia that they refer to as “the territories of the two holy shrines”. Also according to the document Aymen AL Zawahiri was supposedly working for Saddam Intelligence Service as a “source” and his number was “1000”.

In my humble opinion I think that the style of the document does not match the many Saddam Intelligence service documents that I read so I suspect greatly that it is a fake document created recently. I hope that I am wrong because if this document is authentic it is yet another smoking gun that shows Saddam regime strong relation with terrorism and in this case his strong relation to Al Qaeda and their top terrorist leader Aymen Al Zawahiri.

FINDLAY TOWNSHIP - The KDKA investigators have uncovered a security breach at Pittsburgh International Airport. The Transportation Safety Administration, Allegheny County Police and Airport Operations are trying to figure out how a man scaled a fence at the Pittsburgh Airport and enter a secured area without getting caught.
KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin reports it happened on April 24 in the cargo area. According to a police report obtained by KDKA, a security guard, “viewed an individual scale the fence onto the restricted area.” The report goes on to say, “ …surveillance camera #2 captured the person climbing over the fence.” The report indicates the incident happened at 1:36 a.m. The TSA was called immediately; however, the report states county police were called at 1:50 a.m.
But that 14-minute gap may have allowed the suspect to disappear in the darkness less than 100 yards from the runway. County police searched the area for five hours that morning but found no one.

A bulk purchase of disposable cell phones in Muleshoe is turning into a federal investigation.
According to police reports, Muleshoe authorities have questioned a man who confessed to buying sixty disposable cell phones in a variety of Muleshoe stores. He reportedly went on to admit that the phones would eventually be used as bomb detonators in Iraq.
The man has since been released, and no charges were filed.

State police are asking for the public's help finding a radioactive gauge used to measure the condition of highways. The gauge is housed in a yellow box marked radioactive and is labeled Troxler Model 3430, serial number 32506. It was taken from the 100 block of Hillside Drive, Guilford Twp., Franklin County.
State police said the instrument is not harmful, but caution should be used handling any device that containing radioactive elements. Anyone with information on the box or the theft is asked to call 717-264-5161.

Feds find explosive powders in home near Woodland (WA)

WOODLAND, Wash. Residents east of Woodland in southwest Washington can expect to hear a series of explosions this afternoon, as authorities detonate gunpowder and other explosives found at a home.
Charlie Rosenzweig, chief criminal deputy for the Cowlitz County sheriff's office, says federal agents found what he describes as a "significant quantity" of explosive materials at the home (on Copper Creek Road about five miles east of Woodland).
Rosenzweig says the agents had served a search warrant to look for illegal explosive powder commonly used to make fireworks. Nearby residents were not evacuated, because bomb experts secured the explosives. No information yet about any possible suspects or what led federal agents to the site.
