Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans’ graves for Memorial Day and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas, authorities said Monday.
Forty-six flags were burned completely and another 33 were found in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery, authorities said. Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been.
Members of the American Legion on this island off Washington’s northwest coast replaced the burned flags with new ones Sunday afternoon.
The vandals repeated the stunt on Memorial Day after a guard left at dawn, the San Juan County sheriff’s office said. This time, the vandals left 33 of the hand-drawn swastikas.
“This is not an act of free speech. This is a crime,” Sheriff Bill Cumming said in a statement released Monday afternoon.
Sheriff’s department officials declined to comment further on Monday.

IRAN DEVELOPS, PROCURES CRUISE MISSILES
WASHINGTON [MENL] — Iran has been procuring and developing a range of cruise missiles to prepare for war with the United States.
A study by the Marshall Institute asserted that Iran has made a major investment in cruise missiles in an effort to bolster military capabilities. The report, entitled “The Cruise Missile Challenge: Designing a Defense Against Asymmetric Threats,” said Iran has obtained technology, expertise and components from China and Russia.
“Iran is devoting additional resources to anti-ship cruise missile development and production toward the goal of modernizing its naval forces for potential employment in possible conflicts over control of Straits of Hormuz and U.S. and Western naval access to the Gulf region in general,” the report authored by Jeff Kueter and Howard Kleinberg, said.
The report said Iran has deployed such Chinese-origin cruise missiles as Silkworm, Seersucker and the advanced Saccade. The institute also cited Iranian procurement of the Russian-origin AS-15 Kent, termed a thermonuclear-warhead-capable strategic cruise missile. The Kent was said to have been exported by Ukraine.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A HOME-MADE bomb tore the roof off a Camperdown telephone box on Friday night in an act of vandalism police said could have been deadly.
Senior Constable George Hasiotis, of Camperdown police, said an eight-gram CO2 soda bulb was used with gunpowder and aluminium foil to set off the explosion opposite the Camperdown Caravan Park on Park Road between 9pm and 10pm.
``What they’ve used is something similar to a CO2 (canister that is filled with a) non-flammable gas and are used by plumbers or to make Soda Stream (beverages),’’ Senior Constable Hasiotis said. ``If that had detonated later...someone could have been seriously injured or killed. It’s the sort of thing where I will not stop until I find the offenders.
``We’re making inquiries and physical evidence was located at the scene.’’ He said the attack was probably not related to similar explosions in letterboxes in the Cobden area.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Garland police on Friday were seeking vandals who spray-painted swastikas and anti-Semitic slurs on a pastor’s house, mailbox and car in the Oak Ridge section of Garland.
Officer Joe Harn said investigators had not determined whether the vandalism amounted to a hate crime under state law or would be classified as criminal mischief.
He said the offense might be related to a burglary of the cart barn at Oak Ridge Country Club early Thursday. In that incident, 11 golf carts were stolen, covered with graffiti and dumped in a creek and on the golf course.
Residents at the house on Oak Point Drive discovered the graffiti on their property about 10 a.m. Thursday.
The house, which features both a Star of David and a Christian cross on its stucco front wall, belongs to the Rev. Kashmir Masih.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “DELAWARE -— A metal building just outside Delaware was a waypoint for hundreds of pounds of high-grade marijuana headed for Chicago, immigration officials said.
Agents with the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and state narcotics officers raided the building May 16 after intercepting a shipping container crossing the Canadian border.
They then arrested two Canadians and an American who allegedly picked up the pot after it was moved to Chicago.
Daniel Francis Berger, 40 of Hinsdale, Ill., and Canadians David Anthony Downing, 32, and Azar Berend Niekamp, 30, were charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States in connection with the drug operation in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.
Agents seized 600 pounds of hydroponically grown marijuana produced in British Columbia, Canada, that goes by the street name “B.C. Bud,” according to court records.
“B.C. Bud” is more potent than traditional marijuana.”

A militant Islamic group inspired by Al-Qaeda called on the Syrian people Monday to assassinate President Bashar Assad a day after the government held a referendum on granting him a second term.
Abu Jandal al-Dimashqi, the self-declared leader of Tawhid and Jihad in Syria, also urged all Arabs to topple their leaders, accusing them of being renegades, in an audiotape posted on a Web site. ‘’Our people in Syria, how do you accept to be ruled by the vulgar Nassiries (Alawites) ... rise up as one man to chop their legs and heads,’’ al-Dimashqi said. ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Academics are threatening to derail a Government drive to root out Islamic extremists on university campuses.
The University and College Union, will ask its 120,000 members to refuse to take part in the Government-led “witch hunt”.
It insists that Muslims are being “demonised” because of new guidance that asks staff to look out for students falling under the influence of radical preachers.
The Department for Education and Skills has warned university staff to log suspicious behaviour amid fears that campuses are being infiltrated by fanatics recruiting for so-called jihad. In a 20-page report published in December, ministers warned of “serious, but not widespread, Islamic extremist activity in higher education institutions”.
It asks lecturers to vet Islamic preachers who have been invited to campuses, ensure that “hate literature” is not distributed among students and report suspicious behaviour to police.
But at the UCU annual conference in Bournemouth, lecturers will warn of a “recent rise” in racism and its “apparent promotion by Government policies”.
Academics at the union’s London Metropolitan University branch will say that “increasingly restrictive measures and the xenophobic language surrounding them” has led to an increase in racist attacks on Muslims.
“Islamophobia and the attempts at increased surveillance on Muslim communities are not only encouraging racist and xenophobic tendencies in Britain but are also leading to measures that threaten civil liberties,” they will warn.
A motion to the conference will condemn Government attempts to use “members of staff for such witch hunts”.
Prof Anthony Glees, the director of Brunel University’s centre for intelligence and security studies, has warned that Islamic extremists were grooming students at more than 25 campuses.
But Bill Rammell, the higher education minister, insisted that only “a small minority who advocate extremism” were affected.”
