Precisely. Steel does not have to melt to fail in a structure. Anyone who's even seen a medieval-style blacksmith work at a Renaissance Fair knows that steel becomes malleable far cooler than it becomes liquid. Morons like Charlie Sheen and Rosie O'Donnell should be dragged to the site of this accident and have pieces of the steel that failed, stuck up their .... noses. Property damage claim, through the vehicles insurer, on this one will be a doosey insurance wise...guard rails and utility poles are billed 8K to 30K....but a bridge interchange whats that gonna cost?

Actually Kaiser Hospital is almost walking distance from the Maze and 580 goes right by it - I hope they keep his room number secret - I can just see angry commuters leaving their cars and storming the hospital to tar and feather this guy.

I’m driving by the Maze in an hour or so - to get a first hand look - then have a chat with a retired CalTrans exec friend of mine. What a nightmare.
