I am in the middle of a divorce and have a one-year old son whom I plan on raising as well as I can in the time I can spend with him. To this end, if anyone can recommend some character-centered child rearing books, I would be very grateful. Thanks..
In your situation of divorce, I believe this is still crucial, and it boils down to respecting the mother of your children, and always, always working together to do what is best for their sake, NOT for your own egos or need to get emotional validation from your kids. Get your emotional needs met elsewhere - your kids need their parents to be the grown-ups. So, regardless of any negative overtones from the divorce, suck it up for the children.
Anything by Dobson. That man really helped me become a great mother. (Even my kids think so!) :-)
LMAO! This one actually *did* help with my parenting! LOL!!!
My husband would *SO* agree with you! LOL!
I talked to my kids that way, as if they were adults, and I started when they were newborns. And I talked to them ALL the time. And sang to them, patriotic songs and my favorite songs from church, and Jesus Loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so, and nursery rhymes. When my daughter was in 4th grade or so, she came home and said she was the only student who could sing the National Anthem by heart. That came from hearing me sing it regularly.
And yes, LOVE them. Remember all the times you were a kid when someone did not love you and how that felt, and then LOVE your child to the max !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Train Up a Child
By Michael Pearl
This book certainly engendered lots of heat on the Amazon comment list.
Great book! I got it for my boys!
Do you love America?
Do you stand with your hand over your heart when the national anthem is played? Do your eyes well up when you see Old Glory flying over our nations capitol? Are you proud to call this country your home? Now what about your kids? You want them to love America as much as you do, but when popular culture tells them its cooler to hate this country than to love it, how can you teach them to be responsible and loyal citizens?

I’m glad to hear it!
I don’t know if still in print, but I read a couple of books by Dr Haim Ginott many years ago -— before I had children. Not only humorous, but some very practical and sensible suggestions.
I doubt that any one expert has all the answers -— if even there ARE answers for everything — but one helpful strategy usually has many applications and is worth its weight in gold.
