Toddler dies after pit bull attack

From Live5 News

Authorities say a toddler was mauled to death when the family pit bull got loose from inside a laundry room and attacked the young boy.

Brian Palmer died Tuesday morning from his injuries. He would have turned two-years-old in August.

The 2-year-old dog was euthanized, and its head was sent to Columbia for testing.

Authorities say the dog had killed a family cat and fought with another dog within the last month. There were --no-- adults in the house when the attack occurred and the oldest of four children at the home was 16-years-old.

I agree with you badeye. It’s not about the breed - it’s about humans understanding and RESPECTING the breed. I don’t care how nice a pit bull is, a child should never be left unsupervised by a knowledgable adult in the presence of that pit pull. Heck, that goes for ANY breed of dog.

It seems in this instance, the dog was kept in a room and escaped that room, then attacking and killing the baby. The parents/owners of that dog obviously observed poor judgement in keeping that dog after previous attacks on animals (most likely why they had him locked up in the laundry room.) Unfortunatey, they’ve paid a heavy cost for their bad judement.

“I see they are already attacking you for “appeasing” the “killer hounds from Hades!!!1!1!11!1!!eleventy!1” Thank you for injecting much needed logic.

It never fails to surprise me how all around intelligent people can fall victim to such cheap emotional baloney.”

“Unfortunatey, they’ve paid a heavy cost for their bad judement.”

The one common denominator in 99% of all dog attacks.

let me put it another way for our friends on this thread.

“Its the Humans, Stupid!”

There is no such thing as a vicious breed. Only stupid human owners.

“Of course, the ACLU would have a field day with that one, so the only practical thing to do is dispose of the breed [and the ACLU].”

Let's just put it this way: If you want to own any dog/s or other animals who have the ability to kill or maim, be willing to accept the consequences.

It's one of the main tenets of Conservatism: PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Nonsense.

How many times have you seen this kind of headline:

“Poodle mauls neighbor in fatal attack”...

Your welcome. Good point regarding the ganagbangers, ghettoism, adn drugs. It seems to be no coincident that the rise in pit violence coincides with the explosion of gangsta/thug lifestyle. Even if a-c isn’t the case, it’s virtually a guarantee that some idiot who had no business raising dogs, let alone children, would get a pit just to be “cool”.

Yet another toilet stain from the “culture” of Rap (silent c)

Ask your vet. If you have been indoctrinated as many have to believe pit bulls ‘exist to kill our kids’ I don’t expect you to believe a relatively anonymous screen name in a political chat forum.

Just ask your vet if there is such a thing as a vicious breed.

btw, poodles have a high percentage of ‘biting incidents’.

I’m not making this stuff up, and I don’t own a pit bull.

Or they will trot out the numbers showing how many more people are bitten by poodles, beagles, cocker spaniels etc.

Yes, but isn’t it interesting that those breeds aren’t killing or maiming toddlers and old ladies?

ENOUGH!

Pit bulls are misused daily, and we blame the dog?

No, it's not the dog's fault. But the dog is unique in that it's so capable of killing if it gets that in its head.

At the very least, the breed should be regulated the same way other potentially dangerous animals are (like big cats, for example).

Almost every pit bull I've ever seen was owned by white trash. Most of those owners are too stupid to be allowed to control such a dangerous animal.

I really believe this is most of the problem.

We had a neighbor down the street that had a Pit. He used to fill a wagon with concrete blocks, put a pinch collar on the dog, then make it drag the wagon around. If it tried to stop, he would pull the leash on the pinch collar.

One day, I was outside with another neighbor at the park, with all our kids, talking. She has a Boxer, and my husband and I had our Boxers out as well. Our dogs were all on leashes. This pit got out of their yard and came tearing at our dogs. I am not normally afraid of dogs, as I grew up with three Dobies. This dog scared the crap out of me. My husband distracted it while my neighbor and I got all the kids and dogs in my house. We had to call PMO, and when they got there, even they were afraid to touch the dog. They had one hand on their guns the whole time they tried to round the dog up (the owner wasn’t home). This dog went right for my husband’s arm. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

This particular guy ended up getting kicked out of housing (and eventually the USMC) for beating his wife up about 2 months later. There does seem to be a certain “element” attracted to the breed. Bad breeding has a lot to do with all the problems they have also.

I don’t believe every Pit is bad. I foster dogs for rescues a lot, and we have come across some really great Pits (most have been AmStaff mixes, it appears). But sometimes I do think the breed as a whole has been destroyed by backyard breeding.

Ever notice they never give the dog’s name in cases like this?

Pit bulls and rottweilers account for over half of the deaths caused by dogs. But nowhere near half of the attacks.

We do what we can. We’ve always had dogs, but we’ve decided recently we will take older dogs now that have been ‘rescued’ rather than raising pups.

They can’t help themselves. And lord knows they deserve a helping hand just for being a gift of nature to us humans.

Just my point of view.

Odd, I can say the same about people that buy .44 magnum handguns, ala Dirty Harry.

your view of those that own pit bulls seems to be at the heart of your viewpoint. Again, the anti gun nuts come to mind, who don’t like the people that own guns.

Pit bulls are not inherently ‘dangerous’. I’ll suggest more people have died over the past couple of decades from being thrown from a horse, but thats just a guess off the top of my head.

Just ask your vet. Thats all I ask.

“Pit bulls and rottweilers account for over half of the deaths caused by dogs. But nowhere near half of the attacks.”

Yep. I own a Rott/Shepard mix myself. She’s a great dog, friendly to everybody that comes to our house.

But put a hand on anyone in our family, and it takes about half a second before she’s between you and the family member, one Very Loud bark and a look on her face that says ‘You’re obviously insane, and I’m going to hurt you if you don’t let my pack member go...”

She’s never once bit anyone - outside of the accidental ‘nip’ when she and I are playing.

Its not the dog, its the owners, folks.

Some will tell you they got a pit bull or Rott or GShepard for ‘protection’. And for some weird reason they get it into their pea brains they have to make the dog ‘mean’ to protect. Nothing could be further from the truth. These dogs are Pack Animals, and you are the leader of the Pack.

You get accosted, they’ll respond EXACTLY as they would in the wild. They’ll attack the aggressor. You don’t have to ‘teach them’ to do this, and thats probably the single biggest mistake a inexperienced dog owner makes with the larger breeds in particular.

And how many were toddlers, eight year olds, old folks, passersby? I'll suggest that every one of those folks climbed up on that horse of his own volition (not that I agree with your 'guess').

You seem desperate to continue believing a myth about pit bulls.

Ask your vet if there is such a thing as a ‘vicious breed of dog’ and they’ll tell you the answer is ‘no’.

Misuse of a dog is no different than misuse of a gun, or a automobile, or anything else thats potentially dangerous/deadly.

Thats why I keep posting ‘ask your vet’. This is a MSM driven myth, that some politicians on the local level have picked up as a great political gambit, especially in the large urban centers.
