Toddler dies after pit bull attack

Authorities say a toddler was mauled to death when the family pit bull got loose from inside a laundry room and attacked the young boy.
Brian Palmer died Tuesday morning from his injuries. He would have turned two-years-old in August.
The 2-year-old dog was euthanized, and its head was sent to Columbia for testing.
Authorities say the dog had killed a family cat and fought with another dog within the last month. There were --no-- adults in the house when the attack occurred and the oldest of four children at the home was 16-years-old.

Requiring a license, and a big big liability insurance policy. When an insurance company finishes setting the requirements (vet care, veterinary behaviorist assessment, fenced yard with locking gates, home owned not rented, solid employment and credit history, etc.), 99% of the people who currently own pit bulls won't qualify for any insurance, or will be looking at $10,000+ a year in premiums that they have no capacity to pay. The other 1% are the ones that pose no significant risk, i.e. the highly responsible people who recognize the dangers of a large strong dog, and wouldn't keep it around the house with a toddler after it's killed the family's cat, and who have financial stability to lose if they get sued for failing to confine/restrain their dog.
I like those analogies.

There is just something about Pit Bulls. I know, they can seem just fine, but they always seem to turn on little children for no apparent reason.
The knee jerking on this thread is troubling to me.
There is no such thing as a ‘vicious breed of dog’ folks.
Ask you vet.
Then I suggest you that are posting ‘ban the breed’ to review the list of dogs that lead in ‘biting’.
You’ll see the poodle near the top of the list, btw.
Obviously, this dog was extremely aggressive, but thats not ‘typical’ of the breed.
Even money says the owner had the dog and trained it up to this level, or somebody else did.
Again, ask your Vet if there is a breed of dog thats naturally ‘vicious’ and given to attacking. There simply isn’t one.
Pit bulls have tremendous power in their jaws, and as such when they bite, its going to be serious. It just kills me how the MSM has misrepresented this over and over and over again.
The same way they do ‘guns in the home’ btw. EXACTLY THE SAME.
Something went wrong when the small children of the residents of the rest home would come for a visit. Perhaps the dog was trained to bite little kids, or the dog was jealous of the attention the residents gave to the small children.
Nevertheless, the collie bit a deaf girl that was visiting. We questioned it because perhaps she had stepped on the dog and did not hear it yelp. But the 2nd and third small children bites, which were very close together, were enough. We had the dog put to sleep.

I raised German Sheps for years. You do have to watch them around children. They become very protective of their owners and don’t really understand children all the time. I also trained guard dogs for a period of time and believe me, a chained up German Shep is a dangerous animal. If on a leash, and you are confronted by someone, they will feel the tension you have through the leash and go into protect mode. Any large dog needs to be understood. Pit Bulls have a mind of their own and can never be trusted at any time.
Please, everyone, write Cindy Wolff who wrote the column “TLC can bring out the good in abused pit bull” for the Commercial Appeal (Memphis) newspaper, just after an attack in downtown Memphis that caused the loss of an arm for an elderly man getting off the bus:

She is promoting pit bull ownership just at the time they are mauling our citizens.
One of her quotes: “All around Memphis there are other pit bulls living happy lives as family pets.”
Yeah, Cindy, and there may be some happy Komodo dragons or alligators living among us, but that doesn’t mean the cost of their happiness is worth the rest of us living in danger and constant fear of an attack.
They need to be arrested.

Don’t even think about hijacking my second amendment rights to bolster your misguided defense of vicious animals as pets. GUNS DON’T HAVE FREE WILL.
BTW, as an earlier poster said, “FATAL” is the operative word here regarding bites.
I think this is horrible, I really do. I am not defending the dog at all, or the breed, or parents for keeping the dog after it displayed aggression.
But-—the article states the children were home with a 16 year old. I know it isn’t an adult, but if you are going to take issue with the parents, do it because they kept the dog, do it because they chose the dog, but don’t do it because they had a babysitter. My teenage daughter is home with my younger kids every afternoon for 90 minutes until I get home from work. It’s the only way I can do it right now. That doesn’t make me a bad mother.
While signing up for some renters insurance the agent asked me if there were any “pit bull’s, rotwieller’s, german shepard’s, or akita’s” on the property.
When a border collie herds, no one suggests that it's the upbringing. When a lab retrieves, no one suggests that it is the owner's training rubbing off. That's just what those breeds do. But when a pit bull does what that breed usually does, there has to be another explanation?
