NAPA, Calif. — State health officials announced a recall in five states of frozen ground beef patties after at least three Napa County children who ate at Little League baseball snack shacks were sickened by E. coli.
The recall was issued Friday for about 100,000 pounds of frozen patties produced by Merced-based Richwood Meat Co. Inc. from April to May 2006 and distributed in California, Arizona, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
The children all fell ill after eating hamburgers at the St. Helena and Calistoga Little League fields, and have since recovered, said Karen Smith, Napa County's public health officer. Those cases were reported on April 3-4, she said.

Good question, makes you wonder how long patties are kept before someone eats them.
Paranoia notwithstanding, food poisoning is not a new issue. Three kids in CA got sick, and it is national news. Is this the first time in 30 years that three kids got sick from eating at a concession stand? Surely not.
I think it is the 24 hour news cycle and people getting hyped up about every germ they hear about.
Scary stuff. What has been going on with all of these food scares lately. I remember when hearing about this stuff was somewhat more rare (no pun) 5 or 10 years ago.
Good point. You’d think they’d have to have freezer burn by now. A vacum bagged steak will last a year in the freezer - and will be more tender as a result, but ground beef with nothing but paper inbetween the patties, inside a loose plastic bag? No Way. I’ve got some newer than that I won’t eat, saving it for crab bait.
They use human waste for fertilizer, both on purpose and to save on bathroom facilities, IMO.
THIS is true- China, unless they’ve changed recently (and I read they were trying to...) until fairly recently at least, did NOT use diapers on children. They just went where they wanted, outside of course. It is insane that we buy food from 3rd world countries that care not about human life (and don’t have trial lawyers to scare the businesses...)
Funny, as I was reading this, that was the first thought that came to my mind. The second thought was,, for some strange weird odd reason,, illegal immigrants and terrorism both popped into my mind! Thing is,, we may never know. Though I am surprised that USA Today said that China deliberately put this toxic substance in the pet food. That was in this past week. I guess I should look that up and post it.
Will China’s poisoned pet food lead next to human food chain?

They put soy fillers in many of the pre-made patties. ????
Or maybe reporting requirements are better? Ever consider that?
Five, ten years ago ConAgra and Hudson Foods were recalling more than a million pounds of hamburger apiece for E.Coli, and it sure wasn’t because someone took a dump, somewhere.
Spinach harvester.
Step 2: Don't even think about eating a hamburger from a Little League concession stand. We spent years as LL parents -- popcorn, maybe, if you're feeling adventurous.
We have one of those vacuum-pack food storage machines, and the food storage guide that came with it recommends that in the original packaging, frozen ground beef be kept no longer than four months. With vacuum (re)packaging, it will last up to a year. Longer storage won't increase the risk of botulism, but it will affect nutritional value, flavor and overall quality.
Interesting note from the same source: "Freezing at 0 degrees F does not kill micro-organisms, but it stops them from growing."
The cook should be recalled, not the hamburger.
Keep the bull out of the china shop and China out of the bull shop.
In the spinach recall, the ultimately identified culprit were droppings from wild boars who made it on to the property through broken fences and not any human fecal matter from illegal aliens.
I will never eat a burger unless it’s rare to med rare.
I’m 76 and have never had any food poisoning.
That’s certainly your right, however it’s really not safe food practice.
