France and Israel are on a collision course in south Lebanon following incidents involving Israeli warplanes over- flying the positions of the French military contingent serving with the UN peacekeeping force there.

In the most serious confrontation, French troops were said by sources in Paris to have been "just two seconds" from launching an anti- aircraft missile at two Israeli F-15 fighters carrying out mock low-level attack runs over one outpost.

There is little entente cordial between Israel and French troops in south Lebanon, writes philip jacobson

More like they were seconds from surrendering.

Maybe not ful surrender - but they were damned sure gonna stamp their foot, roll their eyes, and then stare! Bet the Israelis are currently sweating gumdrops over that one! (SNORT)

The missle was probably loaded with nothing more than a strongly worded resolution anyway.

Should France down an Israeli plane, I’m afraid that the Eiffel tower would be quickly converted to a smoldering pile of rubble.

This is not a good thing... These sorts of “games” could start a serious war...

If Israel is just trying to rattle the cage of France, this is a really bad thing. If, on the other hand Israel is overflying terrorist positions next to the French emplacements, like we saw when Israel bombed terrorst concentrations near the Canadian outpost during the ill-managed war, then they need to come out and hold France accountable. Then bomb the crap out of them!

I truly do not think France would survive 2 weeks in a war with Israel. And that is with no assistance from the U.S. I say Israel needs to start taking names and kicking some butt.

It would have been interesting if the French had actually fired at the Israeli F-15s. I wonder if they could have hit one and what the Israeli response would have been if the French fired a missile at the F-15s, hit or miss.

france might have been seconds from taking a shot at the Israeli planes...hitting one is entirely something else. If the french had succeeded in knocking one of the planes down, the Israelis would have immediately incinerated the missile site.

These would have been mobile mistral manpads. Very hard to locate.

"good thing France didn't down that jet... not a good idea to mess with Israel" I wish that were true. Israel seems to have been nuetered as well as the US. Israel is trying to make the UN and the world like her while the US is trying to make friends and play patty cake with natural born killers.

Not with the hundreds of cluster bombs we sold them. If the EU or France for that matter gets agressive with israel the US will be on Israels side. Count on it.

I guess the “French troops” decided they’d rather continue living instead.

There were no Canadian military personnel in Lebanon during that war/conflict.

I think he meant to say French forces were seconds away from committing a self-destructive act of firing on the Israeli fighter jets.

The missile probably has white flags painted all over it.

France characterizes the flights as 'mock low-level attack runs' when in reality they are almost certainly recon flights that are endangering the close cooperation between France and Hezbollah in rearming and preparing for more attacks on civilians in Israel.  The problem is this sort of BS tactic by the French will probably work to intimidate Olmert.

I wonder if they would be as quick to shoot down an Iraq or Iranian aircraft in the same circumstances. I think not.
