The shooter in Pearl, MS, was thwarted by the assistant principal who had a weapon in his vehicle that was parked off campus. The asst. principal was in the national guard or some such and was licensed to carry the weapon. He had to park elsewhere, if I recall correctly, and he retrieved his gun despite the law about no weapons on campus. But I may be remembering this incorrectly. It’s been a long time.

I remember the incident, though not the location. The Asst. Prin.'s actions got very litle publicity in the DBM.

This is a sad day.

See my link upthread: http://www.davekopel.com/2A/OthWr/principal&gun.htm

Vice principal stopped school shooter by retrieving his Colt 1911 and screwing the barrel into the shooter’s ear.

The “courthouse in Texas” was the Tyler, Texas courthouse shooting incident on 24 Feb 2005. A crazy lunatic with an AK-type rifle illegally modified to fire full auto shot his wife coming out of the courthouse and then proceeded to pin down law enforcement for several minutes. The police were unable to return fire accurately and Arroyo (said lunatic) apparently had more than enough ammo to keep dozens of police at bay. A citizen (Mark Wilson) retrieved his 1911 from his apartment on the courthouse square and flanked the shooter. Wilson then shot Arroyo in the chest and back multiple times - these being the first hits anyone had managed to score on the lunatic. Wilson ducked back behind a parked car for cover and to reload, and popped back up to assess his target. Arroyo was still mobile and upright, and Wilson ran his pistol dry shooting him. Unfortunately Arroyo was wearing body armor and Wilson’s .45 caliber rounds were unable to penetrate or cause disabling injury. Arroyo turned and fired at least one round, possibly more, at Wilson. Wilson dropped back behind the car (probably wounded) to reload, at which time Arroyo came around the car and shot Wilson at least three times, killing him. At that point, Arroyo appears to have decided that it wasn’t fun any more and left the scene.

Wilson was credited by all the officers at the scene with having saved all their lives at the cost of his own; if he hadn’t intervened, Arroyo would probably have killed most of the cops and civilians in the square. Tyler is rural and help would have been a long time coming.

Wilson may have died, but he accomplished his goal of stopping the lunatic’s rampage.

Docey had a son at Villa Nova, IIRC. I don’t know whether he has more than one child in Philadelphia or not. And whether or not he has transfered.

Thanks. But his building isn’t one of the ones labeled on that map. Tried hitting the .edu website, network connectivity is spotty and it won’t load the page.

There are different extents to it.

Of course there are different extents. That much is obvious to anyone, but it has no bearing on your original comments.

I think students shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns on campus. Does this put me in the same group as people who think no U.S. citizen should be allowed to carry a gun? Give me a break.

There are at least 32 families for which the fact that people like yourselves want only "limited" gun control will be little consolation this evening. For the students on that campus, the law might as well state that no US citizen can carry a gun.

I just got on here, and have to go (at work). Just a quick note. Did anyone find it odd that the FBI was on scene very quickly? I hope this shooter is some type of Jihadist. OK I got to go.... Just something to think about..

So I agree with you, many of these fatalities are most likely due to the fact that immediate emergency care was unavailable.

You can expect about 20% will be killed almost immediately and nothing can be done to save them. For those still alive, all you need is BLS for the first half hour to an hour.

Initial emergency care for a gunshot wound consists of direct pressure over the entrance/exit. Bare hand if need be. Nothing special is needed.

"I think having students carry guns into classrooms would be a really bad idea. "

Your problem is that you don't think. You feel.

I guess it depends on the definition of “terrorism”...

The definition of terrorism would be based on motive rather than religion. However, i suspect this shooting was carried out by two shooters and this is the largest act of terrorism in the US since 9/11.

Maybe, but student witnesses say they saw an armed Asian enter Norris Hall with either clips or “bandoliers”. Either way, somehow this guy evaded police detection for more than an hour. That seems suspect, and easily leads one to conclude a second shooter.

I think it was closer to three hours -- 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

“IMHO if it were Al Qaeda you would have seen simultaneous attacks across multiple universities. That would cause maximum effect, as you would have to close down every single campus in this country, even if only a few are attacked.”

Agree. It may be a radical Muslim (as some have pointed out that there are examples of this type of killings) but the vast, vast, vast majority of radical Muslim attacks involve blowing stuff and people up.

That’s what happens when the good guys are not allowed to arm themselves so that the bad guys can go rampant.

Yes. A "gun-free zone" is an invitation to the devil. I hope this drives the arming of teachers in schools. If school personnel aren't armed, another public school massacre, like Columbine or Russia, is simply a matter of time.

I believe he left work when was able to evacuate and hasn’t been on since. I’m sure when he is home and able to give us an update of what he saw we will know he is ok. But I’m sure at this point he is one shocked guy like the rest of us.

Shoedog,

Do you always bring out your weakest examples to try to win an arguement?

We’re not talking about minors. Most college kids are legally adults and we’re not talking about being in a confined space with unique pressurization due to the altitude.

Get with it or get gone, ShoeDog.

OK, I'll put on the nomex underwear and ask the Question:

What were the LEO's doing for THREE HOURS while this was happening?

Were they trying to "Negotiate"?, Were the hiding behind a tree waiting for the perp to run out of ammo?

BILLIONS of dollars spent on federal subsidies to law enforcment for everything from Kevlar and m-16's to bomb sniffers and they cant take out a perp with 2 handguns?

WTF!

Why wasn’t this man stopped before he killed 32 people? I just don’t understand and I think if I was a parent of a child there I’d demand some serious answer right away. This is horrific and beyond understandable!

Nah, it's easily understandable. University building are very dense with people - some classrooms hold over 500 people.

A person wouldn't even have to be that great of a shot. It's like shooting fish in a barrel - all the shooter would have to do is shoot into the crowd at chest level.

A very motivated shooter could easily kill more than 22 or 32 in a very short time frame if they put their mind to it.
