Belgium to impose tax on barbequing to fight global warming
RIA Novosti ^ | April 3rd 2007 | RIA Novosti

BRUSSELS, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - The government of Belgium's French-speaking region of Wallonia, which has a population of about 4 million, has approved a tax on barbequing, local media reported.

Experts said that between 50 and 100 grams of CO2, a so-called greenhouse gas, is emitted during barbequing. Beginning June 2007, residents of Wallonia will have to pay 20 euros for a grilling session.

The local authorities plan to monitor compliance with the new tax legislation from helicopters, whose thermal sensors will detect burning grills.

Scientists believe CO2 emissions are a major cause of global warming.

You try to do that in Texas, and you’ll have a war on your hands.

I suppose that after the BBQ, they will start going after teenagers lighting flatulance bursts.
What about the cigarettes? I don’t think I’ve ever see a European without a cigarette sticking out of their mouth.

I guarantee you that at some point, someone is going to suggest we all be monitored electronically as to our CO2 output. I would not be surprised that some nutcase will come out with a plan that we all wear CO2 bracelets or collars. Sound crazy??? I don’t think so. One more way to monitor and control due to the necessity of saving the planet. You know,, this all is beginning to sound like some crazy sci fi movie,, yet here it is in unfolding in front of us.

You just can’t tell about stuff like this anymore.
Really nutty stuff turns out to be true.

As I said before, any effective April Fools' prank has to have a grain of truth to it. This story is plausible, but I'm 95% sure after trying to wade through French-language websites (without speaking a word of French), that it was an April Fools' hoax. Perhaps someone should send the story to Snopes to investigate.

Mammoth Mountain is a pitiful piker compared to Lake Nyos in Cameroon. In 1986, the saturated lake release an estimated 1 cubic kilometer of CO2 into the air:

1.98 kg/m3

1,000,000,000 m3 CO2

1,980,000,000 kg CO2

1.98E12 g CO2

$26.64 / 75 g = 0.3552 $/g CO2

Bada Boom! $7E11 Aka $700 BILLION!

Africa Wins! That's about 6 times the annual GDP of all of Africa. I think they may have a hard time paying the EnviroCommies. It'll take the entire continent six years to pay the sin commited by that lake in just one day.

too bad they can’t tax self-righteousness - they’d make a fortune in western europe!

Assuming the article has it's facts correct (I don't have a link to a native source article and don't know French), how much CO2 will the helicopter pump out as they look for those rogue BBQ parties???

EXACTLY! This was my first thought as well....my BBQ will put out less CO2 in a year than that chopper will just warming up....

Proof that ALL "global warming" is a scheme by the government to squeeze more tax money out of it's citizens while exerting more control over them....and that Algore is a moron....

Imagine if they tried something like that in Texas, hehe;

I imagine the black market supply of Sparrow SAM's would dry up almost overnight....

Is this another “level-headed” response to the global warming and conservation problems?

April Fool.

Almost had me going (hasn't California talked about limiting Burger King emissions -- mainly smoke/soot, not CO2) because of the contribution to smog?

But the thermal sensor helicopter put it over the top. All you have to do is get a Weber grill and keep the top down ;-)

Any good April Fool's prank has to have a grain of truth to it in order to succeed.

I can't tell if the aired story was true or tongue-in-cheek, since I don't speak French. The video is here. Perhaps one of the French-speaking FReepers can watch and tell us.

Bon jour. Do you think this article was posted to make tetes de merde out of us?

LOL! In the capitol of my home state, no less.

One job I had was 100 yards away from the Boston Tea Party tourist trap. I loved watching the people go there and make fools out of themselves with the historically inaccurate portrayal.

So let’s make sure we get this straight! The Left has imposed a tax on fire?

Beavis is not going to be happy, since he doesn't know this is April Fools material.

Your links here regarding the extreme situation with the way the Supreme Court just ruled on this CO2=pollutant are very good to look at.
