Belgium to impose tax on barbequing to fight global warming

BRUSSELS, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - The government of Belgium's French-speaking region of Wallonia, which has a population of about 4 million, has approved a tax on barbequing, local media reported.

Experts said that between 50 and 100 grams of CO2, a so-called greenhouse gas, is emitted during barbequing. Beginning June 2007, residents of Wallonia will have to pay 20 euros for a grilling session.

The local authorities plan to monitor compliance with the new tax legislation from helicopters, whose thermal sensors will detect burning grills.

Scientists believe CO2 emissions are a major cause of global warming.

“Belgium has been a cartoonish country for a number of years now...”

Belgium — the one nation perhaps more worthless than France.

“Governments refuse to protect us from criminals and terrorists but they fly over our yards to fine people who are barbecuing? Government out of control.”

Of course. Since folks that barbeque are normally decent, law-abiding citizens, the government considers them easy targets.

Your tagline says it all!

Liberals continue to believe in the magical power of taxes to scrub CO2 from the atmosphere.

I’m a Southernor, and can’t live without my barbeque. I was just going to post the same comment, but you did it for me (grin).

“Must be a considerable amount of barbecuing in Belgium for it to be worthwhile to ...”

“I dunno. Somehow when I hear the word “Belgium” the word “barbecuing” doesn’t immediately leap to mind.”

The US has at least one military base there (Chevieres). Maybe this stupid law is designed, in a backhanded way, to discriminate against us?

If you could pay all your neighbors to cook inside, then you would be OFFSET and be able to BBQ all you wanted.

As much as I cook on the grill (2-3X/week in good weather, at least), my neighbors would be cooking inside from now till doomsday.

But the original Belgian story on the subject appears to have been posted that day.

It's kinda sad when people aren't sure when you're joking, if you know what I mean.

Any good April Fool's prank has to have a grain of truth to it in order to succeed.

I can't tell if the aired story was true or tongue-in-cheek, since I don't speak French. The video is here. Perhaps one of the French-speaking FReepers can watch and tell us.

The discussion in this forum claims that the article "cetais un poisson d'avril" - a fish of April. The translated French version of Wikipedia says that "un poisson d'avril" French for April Fool's joke (literally, a fish of April).

Color me suspicious.

I could see it happening here. The blue moonbat states of California, Oregon, and Washington would be the first to fall.

Why not, the sheeple are already conditioned to being controlled.

When they came for the drinkers during Prohibition, I did not speak out, as I was not a drinker.

When they came for the employees of the oldest profession in the world, I did not speak out, as I had no interest in purchasing sex.

When they came for the purveyors of what was deemed to be "obscene" or "offensive", I did not speak out, as I was not a fan of entertainers like Lenny Bruce or Howard Stern.

When they came to ban the female mammary gland from TV, I did not speak out, because Brian Boitano told me not to.

When they came for the marijuana smokers, I did not speak out, as I was not a marijuana smoker.

When they came for the steroid users, I did not speak out, as I was not a steroid user.

When they came for the pornographers, I did not speak out, as I was not a pornographer.

When they came for the people who don't wear seatbelts, I did not speak out, as I always wore my seatbelt.

When they came for the gun owners, I did not speak out, as I was not a gun owner.

When they came for the gamblers, I did not speak out, as I was not a gambler.

When they came for the cigarette smokers, I did not speak out, as I was not a smoker.

When they came for the overweight and the obese, I did not speak out, as I was not overweight or obese.

When they came for the drinkers (again), I did not speak out, as I was not a drinker.

When they came for the Bar-B-Q griller wearing a "kiss the cook" apron, I did not speak out, as I was a PETA wacko.

Then they came for me...and there was nobody left to speak out.

They can have my grill when they pry it from my cold, dead hands...of course, one of my hands will have a nice, cold brewski in it.

So just open the garage door and cook in there. Or under a coved patio.

Or use an electric grill. If electric cars emit no CO2, then the same must be true for an electric grill.

Imagine if they tried something like that in Texas, hehe;)

Yeah, helicopter shoot-downs would not be restricted to Iraq and Afghanistan.
